When Colin finds out Eloise has cancelled on a trip to Greece with Penelope at the last minute he volunteers to take her place. “It’s not true, you know.”
“Colin and I. I imagine you know already. You know your children very well and you’ve had more than your fair share of experience with the tabloids over the years. But I thought I should reassure you. Colin and I aren’t dating.”
“I know how seriously you take your children’s happiness and I would never do anything to hurt Colin.”
“Penelope, how can you think that you dating Colin would bring me anything but joy? How would you dating Colin bring him anything but happiness?”
“Colin could date anyone in the world,” Penelope’s voice wobbled. “He deserves the best.”
The simplicity of the reply broke Penelope.
Penelope cried. Voice straining against her tears she managed to choke out. “I’m not good enough for him.”
“Who convinced you of that dear? Surely not Colin.”
Penelope refused to tell his mother about the words overheard so many years ago.
“Well, half the world seems to be convinced I’ve manipulated him and trapped him in a relationship.”
“That doesn’t sound like my sweet girl.”
“The other half seems to be of the opinion that he must have suffered a head injury.”
“That sounds more like my Colin,” Violet laughed. “Perhaps a small blow to the head might do him some good.”
“Violet!” Penelope gasped, a giggle breaking through the tears.
“Nothing serious. Just enough to knock some sense into him,” she teased.
“It doesn’t matter anyways. Like I said, we’re not dating.”
“Hmmm…” Violet hummed wistfully.
