Can we kill the idea that “they” as a gender-neutral pronoun is always inclusive, progressive, and non-offensive in every situation? Especially for situations where the gender and proper pronouns of the person are already known?
Like now and then I’ll chat about one of my friends abroad to my roommate – a friend I’ve explicitly mentioned is a woman and always use “she” for – yet still when I bring her up my roommate says “Oh, THEY’re your friend abroad, right? Are you going to call THEM later?” and insistently continues to use “they” to refer to my female friend who I always refer to with female pronouns for the rest of the conversation, even catching herself and stopping herself from saying “she”.
That’s not inclusive, it’s fucking insulting. It’s insulting me to imply that I don’t know the gender of a woman I’ve been friends with for 10+ years, and it’s insulting her to imply that she can’t believably be a woman worth using the proper language for. Get your virtue-signalling head out of your ass and quit passive-aggressively trying to correct my pronoun use for a person you don’t even know.

I had a friend in Philly who would always ALWAYS refer to me as “they” right in front of me. Even after I asked him not to do it.
Because guess what? When you use “they” to describe me, and someone actually looks to try and guess, they’re probably going to be able to clock me. And this happened nearly. Every. Time. Never happened when people (who had no idea I’m trans to begin with) referred to me as “he” though.
When you just use “he” no one’s going to think much of it. I look enough like a young man to be a “he,” even though it’s not really that difficult to clock me as FtM if someone is actively looking for cues of that. If you give someone the pronoun right off the bat to use for me, they’re probably not going to be looking any deeper into it. Because with that they’re going to be seeing me as a male first. Give them “they,” and they’re going to actively look for secondary sex characteristics that will point in one direction or the other. As I am now, I have more female secondary sex characteristics than male ones.
So just. Don’t. Fucking. Do. It.
Thank you for adding this; I was just complaining about it as a cis person who’s annoyed with how stupid and insensitive it is, but when this behaviour is directed at trans people it can actually be dangerous (not to mention FAR more disrespectful & dysphoria-triggering) and that’s really important to point out.
“They” is not a one-size-fits-all pronoun. Intentionally misgendering people just so you can feel inclusive has consequences.
Absolutely. I don’t know why people do this. I will tell a story about, say, a friend of mine who’s a woman and use she/her pronouns significantly throughout, and I’ve had people be like “Oh wow did that really happen to them?” “What’d they do next?” And it’s like…Did you already forget my friend’s pronouns 2 seconds after I finished telling the story? I mean, really? We’re not talking about a stranger of unknown gender here, or someone we know to actually use they/them pronouns. We’re talking about a woman I’ve known for several years who only uses she/her, and I just made that super clear.
Why do people do that??? It’s definitely something I’ve only ever noticed from cis people who are trying to be more inclusive.
And yes, once or twice I’ve had the experience of someone who knew I was a trans man and panicked upon introducing me to someone and called me “they.” It’s always very unpleasant, and can absolutely be very dangerous in situations other than my own.
