“What are you thinking about?”
IM THINKING ABOUT HOW ALL THE PROTAGONISTS IN A DAY OF FALLEN NIGHT GOT TO MEET EXCEPT FOR GLORIAN, SHOWING HOW SHES NOT TRULY FREE AND THEN HOW IN THE PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE SABRAN MEETS ALL THE PROTAGONISTS BECAUSE SHE IS FREE AND BROKE THE CHAIN THAT BINDS ALL THE BERETHNET QUEENS. THAT IS WHAT IM THINKING ABOUT.
ead and sabran in a tender moment

More Yesteryear thoughts: The whole existence of the Manosphere cabin pisses me right off. Just the idea that Caleb was prepared to give Noah and Abel a reprieve from their hellish life but never even considered giving Maeve or Mary so much as a day of leisure, plainly considered them unworthy of it purely because they were girls kind of made me want to chew on one of the corners of the book. He's happy to take it relatively easy at the expense of consigning Mary to a joyless existence as the family drudge; after all, that's what a woman is for! When I tell you I think Caleb is just as bad as Natalie, this kind of shit is what I mean. Just, just, fuck you, Caleb.
(And frankly, fuck you, Samuel and Stetson, for enabling this for so long, for standing by and watching your younger siblings live in the hell your parents crafted for them, and at best not helping Clementine and at worst actively obstructing Clementine from rescuing the youngest children for so long. And a big, hearty fuck you, too, to Doug, who judging by Clementine's comment about having to wait for you to run out of money before she could rescue the children, was definitely obstructing all attempts to bring this farce to an end. It's downright miraculous all four of those kids survived long enough for Clementine to get them out, and their own family was worsening their odds of survival. Like, Clementine says Jessa and Junebug aren't doing well, but I don't know: they'd have to be doing really badly for me to think they were doing worse than Samuel and Stetson.)
lord somebody said they didn’t like Yesteryear because the main character was “unlikable” as if that wasn’t the entire point. like the book is a satire about a tradwife influencer. literacy is dead
Yesteryear thoughts: the ending was fantastic. Natalie’s still convinced that she’s better than everyone else, still so obsessed with Reena that even though she’s doing hard time for child abuse, she still thinks she can make everything good for herself again if she can get one-up over the mythical version of Reena, the final boss of Angry Women, she’s created in her head. She thinks one interview lets her wrest control of the narrative and rewrite reality.
Except Reena is plainly completely indifferent to her, beyond perhaps some mild concern over Natalie’s mental competency and ability to consent to an interview. Natalie’s convinced herself that Reena must be struggling in life, that Reena needs her, but both of these things are plainly not true. Natalie is still the same parasitic troll that she ever was, desperate for outrage to feed on. She’ll be obsessed with Reena for the rest of her life, and Reena will likely never think about her again after this interview is over.
And the way the book ends on the excerpt from Mary’s memoir and Mary’s first time leaving the ranch? Perfect. Natalie doesn’t get to control the narrative anymore. That’s the province of her parentified daughter-mom, now.
thinking about the ending of Yesteryear and it is sooo fascinating to me that the closest thing we get to true tenderness between Natalie and Caleb, true honesty and vulnerability between husband and wife, is when they finally admit they fucking hate each other.
cutting your own hair is fun because a) if you mess it up you can tell people "well, i did it myself" and they will instantly understand that they should not be holding your haircut to hairdresser standards b) if you DONT mess it up then whenever you get a compliment on your hair you can say 'thanks, i did it myself!' and they will think you are even cooler than you already are. trust me works every time.
