Grace’s bottom lip hangs open but no words come out. No longer supporting his weight against Grace’s back, Simon crawls forward and turns around; Grace fights his own body’s instinctive desire to chase the proximity and instead just shifts around until he’s facing the other, the three-feet of distance between them seeming monumental.

“Grace. What aren’t you telling me?”

Chapter Summary:

Simon wakes Grace up as early as he can reasonably justify, coaxing him into consciousness with a big hand on his limp shoulder.

Grace shifts closer to the interruption, half-asleep with his eyes half-open, and a loose, lazy grin that Grace doesn’t have the sense to feel silly about until he blinks a couple of times and defogs the sleepy haze from his vision to reveal a very impatient-looking Simon.

“Dr. Ryland Grace?”

“Uh,” Grace blinks a couple more times. There’s nothing more to be seen than Simon, his arm crossed over his chest, brows raised expectantly over wide, eager eyes. “Good morning to you too.”

“Dr. Ryland Grace,” Simon says again, firmer.

“...yes?”

I find it fascinating how in almost every Bloodymary fic Simon and Grace at some point handle this one issue:

Simon does something "wrong" (breaks something, attacks Ryland, hurts himself, etc.), he expects to be punished or yelled at, and instead Grace is worried and/or asks him why he did what he did, which in turn confuses Simon, and they discuss/have an argument over why the reasons for perceived wrongdoing don't/do matter

I dunno if this is a thing that writers organically navigate to while writing these two, or if this is a case of there being one or two influential fics with this topic that other writers were inspired by. In any case, it's a fascinating observation

i'm on the side that it feels quite organic in the context of these two

maybe a lot of it comes from simon's cult background? we don't know a whole lot about eden's canonical operations/social behaviours, so there's room for interpretation there that i at least personally filled some of the gaps in with punitive measures often observed in cults to maintain member conformity.

other than that, maybe it's that simon was the only one of his brothers on filament station to be punished; we also don't have a lot of information about simon's imprisonment between being taken into custody and sent out in the lung, so it's not hard to imagine he may have experienced some degree of punishment/hardship prior to taking the opportunity to go down.

similarly, grace being a junior high teacher means he (at least in my interpretation) probably has a good sense for conflict resolution (specifically bc he works w preteens and is clearly a beloved/trusted figure to his students) and so i think he kind of naturally falls into the role of handling stressful situations responsibly

just my thoughts! :)

fr tho blessed are thou amongst is the longest thing i have written in a while, i am now well into the smut bit, really want significant payoff for the 55k~ of slow burn if not for y'all then for myself, have had the desire to write this from the moment i started phm and was writing it literally through my first watch, and then paused writing entirely to read the book once I had finished the movie bc i reaaaally wanted to acquaint myself with Rocky's book voice as well and have access to Grace's thoughts

there was a period of time where i had both iron lung and phm ready to go in tabs beside the fic if i needed to reference anything jsdfhjskd

anyways. i am overwhelmed by the love it's been getting, has been my little passion project and it has been such a lovely experience just creating it :)
