@caterpillars-rock
hell fucking yes
female and male red-headed ash borers (Neoclytus acuminatus)
as was foreseen, i managed to find a Charaxes jasius caterpillar as soon as the cold weather started. what wasn't foreseen was the absolutely sorry state i'd find it in. what happened to you, guy?
this is encouraging regardless, as it means there are probably others somewhere on the couple dozen strawberry trees near me. time to check every single one every day until i find a caterpillar that hasn't been pickled by unknown forces
didn't take long
pictured above was the first one i found, smaller than the others and not as plump. maybe an earlier instar?
these two were bigger and out in the open, which made for slightly better pictures if you ignore the fact that my phone is a relic from the ordovician and the woods were like a giant wind turbine today
one last pic, blurrier than the others but i couldn't miss the opportunity to show off the prolegs. what a joyous day to be a caterpillar fan, or presumably an animal that eats caterpillars as silly as it sounds, these guys are genuinely a big reason for me to look forward to autumn and winter as someone with very little patience for wind and rain. get familiar with your local fauna, find a seasonal favorite or two, and you'll start to appreciate your seasons way more. you won't regret it
This caterpillar looks like…. something

the last photo I took of this guy from October '22........ I was hoping to see him get cocoon'd or whatever, but I couldn't find him again.
The way is perilous; take this for your (emotional) protection
(I love tersa sphynx moths, & the caterpillars are lovely wingless airliners)
This lump was roaming the hot sand on a service trail, and I relocated it to a greener place.
