DO YOU EVEN CLONE, BRO?

There are many things that we can imply when it comes to ethics over the highly debated topics of cloning and genetic engineering. Within cloning, there is all types of people who believe all different things. Some believe that cloning would be a terrible idea, that it would affect society in a negative way, and we should stay away from it; others think that cloning may further our civilization in lots of different ways. Some pros of cloning would be helping prevent extinction of species, aiding in food production, and it can also help couples who might want someday to have children of their own. Those are all wonderful benefits of cloning that would help our society, but there is always reasons that conflict with our morals in cloning that may keep it from ever feeling completely okay with it; first off it is not entirely safe and accurate. Cloning may seem to be something that would help us, but the safety and health of those around us is more important than adding clones into our world. It is also very unethical, and people would abuse their abilities and possibly let it get out of hand too. Cloning overall is unethical and I think people have good intentions with cloning, but do not always realize the difficulty it may bring; I think scientists should not pursue human cloning because of these reasons, but mostly for the safety of people all over the world.

In the same way, in Genetic Engineering we can imply that the goal would be to help prevent the transmission of diseases, limiting disease, reducing hunger, and so much more. Genetic engineering, on the other hand, can also lead to uncontrollable population growth, fear of spreading presumptuous species, and lots of other things that can backfire on our society. There are many pros and cons for genetic engineering as well, but I think that scientists should not pursue genetic engineering as well, because it raises so many questions and suspicions about what could happen and how it could affect the world negatively.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, gives us an idea of what it would be like if we created a new being and let it roam the earth, it is a cautionary tale for modern scientific study because it shows the consequences of Victor Frankenstein’s scientific experiment and how much of his life was affected by it, including even losing his own brother. Modern science today should look to that story to realize that there is consequences for everything we do, especially when we are messing with types of life and changing the way the world is supposed to work. I believe overall that cloning and genetic engineering would have a negative effect on the world we live in today, and I think scientists should not mess with these types of technology because it is not the way God intended it the world to be.

BIOETHICS

Ethics plays a big role in scientific research. There is definitely right and wrong things, morally when it comes to dilemmas that have appeared recently in our world today. Scientific Research is being improved everyday on certain topics like genetics, cloning, abortion, and so much more that the world is trying to explain or learn more about. There is an array of opinions on every subject that changes the way people think and their opinions on what is right and wrong. Many topics such as abortion, Christians believe to be wrong in most scenarios, while people of other religious backgrounds may think very differently about the topic. Ethics in scientific research is mostly based on opinion because it can change so drastically from one person to another, but sometimes things can be obviously wrong or right based on the world's standards.

Ambition and the pursuit of knowledge is a big problem in our world today. We as humans are greedy for power, and our levels of ambition tend to grow and grow out of proportion and so people may pursue knowledge about things, but eventually realize they did it for all the wrong reasons. Scientific studies and research can change the world in a good or bad way, depending on how we use our knowledge and power.

The technology exists to make remarkable advances in our society and to bring new ideas and growth to our civilization, but people may also use it to bring things into our lives that will create conflict and destruction as well. There is a balance in when we should use that technology because we have to be so careful in the way that we use it, so I think that it should not always be acted upon even if it exists, because we have to think of how it will affect the world around us and then decide from there if it will help or hurt our society and our lifestyle as well. If the technology has benefits that can further our society and help us grow, but hurts something else in the process, that is when it gets a little sticky. People in our world today have all different opinions on these things, and so people's idea of ethics seem to change from person to person and vary from all ends of the spectrum. Ethics plays a big role in scientific research, but is a very diverse subject in our world today.

SUBLIME

Victor visits many beautiful places throughout the story. He travels to  Chamounix valley, France where he goes to get away from all of the things that cause him stress, like the monster that he created and the idea of creating another monster. Another place he visits was the mountains where the monster had lived, and it was breathtaking for him and it was a private place for the monster to live out in the mountains. These are just a couple of examples, while there are many more. One of the most breathtaking places that I have ever been was the Road to Hana on Maui, Hawaii. We were able to ride on the edge on a cliff and see so many different terrains including rainforest, blacksand beaches, waterfalls, and so much more that left me in awe. Driving on the Road to Hana was a big example of sublime nature and riding through it I got to see so many things that made me speechless. One thing that I didn’t see too much there was ice, but ice was a big part of how frankenstein began and ended. It can represent many things on the book. It could represent how cold and lifeless the story might have been and it could also symbolize death and physical/emotional numbness. It is very appropriate for the novel to begin and end in ice because of the setting and story line being so cold and bitter almost; it was able to achieve the same feeling as the story and set the scene very well.

ETHICAL DILEMMA

Victor in a way might have a responsibility to create a mate for the creature, because he made him, but he left the creature with no one to live with or to love. The creature lives in constant loneliness which is why he tells Victor that he will ruin his life and kill all of his friends if he does not create a companion for him. This is a responsibility that is hard for Victor because if he does create a mate for the creature, he is creating another monster that is stronger and smarter than him, that might be able to kill off all of society, though by not creating the monster he will have to suffer the consequences. This is definitely a hard decision knowing that the creature says that he promises not to hurt anyone and to go away after he his mate is created, but Victor does not know for sure if he can trust him. In my opinion, I believe that Victor should not create a mate for the creature because in doing that he is creating another monster who has the abilities and the brain power to overtake all the people and their society, and Victor, having created this monster, should know how to destroy it.

THE X FACTOR

CREATURE: “All men hate creatures who are not alike to them. You, my creator, despise me, and I know you plan to kill me. If you will just let me live my own life, without getting in your way, then I won’t wreak havoc on you, and I will leave you in peace. But, if you refuse to accept my idea for living, I will come after you and your all your friends. Have I not been miserable for my life life so far? I still have will to live, even though I have lived in anguish for so long. You have made me more powerful than yourself, Victor. I wouldn’t choose to pick a fight with because you know that I am stronger than you. If you leave me alone, I will not have to fight you Victor. I have lived in complete misery because the world does not accept me, so I have had to live alone. If all of the world knew that I was alive, they would come after me and seek to destroy me. If you come to the mountains with me, I will tell you my story and then you can decide what to do with it. You can decide whether I will live a long harmless life, or if I will be the cause of lots of destruction and turmoil in your life.”

FRANKENSTEIN: “Devil, why have you come back to reveal yourself to me? I cannot get past the thought of you taking many lives of the people that you have never even met. The torture that you have gone through like loneliness and isolation, are nothing compared to the punishment that you should have from Hell. Begone! In this world, we can never be friends. We are enemies, leave now or we will have to fight it out to see who will survive. And why do you make me recall the memories of your creation, knowing that is such an agonizing reminder of my horrible mistake. I realize that I am the reason that you are alive, and I do not need to be reminded. Leave right now, I cannot look at your ugly grotesque figure any more.”

ROLE OF PARENTS

I believe that Victor does have responsibility in taking care of his newly created monster, and is now the father figure in the monsters life. He has just created a being that is basically a “blank slate”, and now he has the responsibility to take care of, and to teach the monster how to live and what to do because the monster is clueless. I think that Victor definitely should have been more of a father figure, because he was the only manly figure that interacted with the monster and should’ve helped him out after creating him. I think that after he saw what he had created and he was terrified, he should have figure out how to destroy it, or thought about that before he raised him to life. If he was going to create this monster, he probably should have known what to do if something went wrong when trying to wake him. I believe that isolating him would have made him more prone to attacking people in society, or not knowing how to live in public. Letting him go into the world, with someone following him and watching him, may have been better for him than keeping him from society. I think that Victor is completely to blame for the monster becoming a murderer because everyone always knows that nothing good comes from creating a monster, and the fact that he went to sleep after he let him come alive, and did not watch him to see what he would do is not helping his case at all.

TABULA RASA

Tabula Rasa is latin for "blank slate". I agree that people do start from a blank slate when they are born, but as they as raised by their parents, they are going to be shaped to how they are living and how their surroundings will effect them. I think that people are more raise by nurture than by nature. Your hardwired characteristics will definitely affect you and how you live, but as your life goes on, you will be ultimately shaped by who and what you are surrounding yourself with. Overall, I believe that people do start with a blank slate, but the things that they naturally inherit will never go away, while the things that will shape you throughout your life will be causes from your situation and circumstances. A child will definitely be affected by not having a mother figure in my opinion. I believe that having a motherly figure to help you out is what can share that good opposite point of view that is necessary to be socially and culturally up to date. It definitely starts as the parents job to nurture the child, but after they start to grow and become more individual, the society will ultimately shape who they are as a person, so I would say it is a combination of both. I think parents should love their children unconditionally, but it can be hard when they go directly against your orders or do something that you don't agree with, but I think they should look past that disagreement and still love them anyway. Christ tells us in John, to love others just as He has loved us, and so I believe that loving someone doesn't mean you agree with what they believe.
