Her anger dissolved slightly at the girl’s words. “I guess,” she muttered. “If it was for all the right reasons I’d be down, but somethin’ tells me this is one big joke at my expense. But I guess the joke’s on them if I win, right?” She looked down and realized she was still holding Catherine’s ballot in her hand. Sarah extended it to her with an apologetic look on her face. “Uh. Thanks for lettin’ me borrow this, by the way. Hope I didn’t crinkle it or nothin’.”

“Even if it was a joke, yeah; you’d still get a crown at the end of the night ad that’s more than what some people could say about their academic experience.” Catherine smiled and took back the ballot, “Don’t worry, I could always just pick up another one from the table if it got too bad, but it isn’t that bad.” She used the wall for leverage and glanced over her shoulder back at Sarah, “Would you be offended if I voted for you? No joke, I think you’d make a great king.”

“Sunshine is too hot. People are annoying. I only like sandwiches when I can eat them on a proper table and…” A pause. “Fun,” Veronica hums, sounding as if she has encountered a foreign word and is trying to decipher what it means. “Well fun is very subjective. What is fun for you, may not be fun for me. And rest assured, there are people who find picnics not fun at all.”

“But that’s why there’s shade. And friends. And picnic tables. And, while that’s true, you do have the option of not coming to the picnic, so  you wouldn’t have to worry about having a bad time, because you could choose not to be there,” Catherine huffed.

Especially if you are not truly ignorant to the situation and you just wish you were,” Eve didn’t like talking to random people about her past. A dance like this certainly wasn’t Catherine’s first rodeo; she knew how the alcohol would somehow rear its face, she knew some kids would find some way to smuggle in joints, and most would find some dark area to fuck each other. Catherine was also very well-aware of how boring it would be without a little bit of motivation, so, an hour before the ball, she popped a tab of acid - a remnant she managed to sneak in from before she was at Plath - and she was already into a drowning trip. She stood against a wall, running the silk fabric of her dress between her fingertips, watching the visuals distort everything about her. She saw someone, walking closer and closer towards her, and she carefully formed a polite, “Hello,” when they got close enough.

“No way. You’re kiddin’ me. Let me see that!” Sarah snatched the ballot card from the person’s hands and stared at it in shock. “KING? I’m nominated for King? What, does being into girls automatically make me a guy? That’s bullshit. Do I really look that butch?“

Catherine felt the ballot stripped from her hands and her gaze snapped to the person who so rudely took it. Her frustration diminished when Sarah began yelling, perhaps not at Catherine, but close enough to make her anxious. “I don’t think you look very butch at all, but winning anything, especially as unorthodox as a girl for King, is pretty cool.”

“Sometimes you need to force yourself to believe things that are not necessarily true, in order to survive.” Eve blushed a bit and shook her head, “No, I do not believe we are. If I am honest, our relationship confuses me quite a bit, but to the best of my knowledge we are just good friends who once loved each other.”

“I couldn’t agree more. Sometimes ignorance truly is bliss and I’d rather feign ignorance than face some things that just aren’t good for me.” It perplexed Catherine, the way that Eve spoke of Jonah made her thing the two of them were absolutely in love. “That’s unfortunate. It seems like the two of you’d make a good couple.”

“That makes sense. I’m exceedingly mediocre at it, but I’m really good at getting the little boost at the beginning of the race and that’s basically a pro move,” he said with a laugh. “Nah, they were so strict at work that they sort of chilled at home.”

I start holding down the button way too early and smoke out,” she said, pouting a bit. “That’s a lucky draw for you; I’ve always thought that all cops’ kids grew up in a kind of jail-like house. Min Jae offered a nod and a small smile, but then he realized how CARRIED AWAY he was getting. For God’s sake, he’s talking to a beautiful girl, how did he get a STUPID poll get in the way of that?  “Too late for that,” he waved his hand dismissively, his previously stern expression replaced with a GRIN. “But never too late for introductions, right?  The name’s Min Jae.”

She shrugged and smiled, “I suppose not, no.” She reached her hand out, “I’m Catherine. It’s certainly nice to meet you, Min Jae.”

“What?” He confused Catherine, but he shifted from the topic so quickly, she hardly had time to register that he had moved on. “That was…funny,” she said, uncertainly. “It’s okay, Cillian, The Asshole. I’m Catherine.” She smiled and reached out a hand to shake his.

Cillian giggles, shaking his head, “Thanks, I’ve been known to have a sense of humour, best way to keep away the overwhelming desire to scream at the top of my lungs,” he says, reaching out to take her hand after a moment of consideration, “This feels very formal. Have I just signed over my soul? I’m scared.”

“Whatever helps you cope, my friend,” Catherine smiled softly. When she took back her hand, she was chuckling, “No, no. Not yet, at least. My father just raised me to be formal when meeting someone new.” She shrugged, “Force of habit.”

“I don’t know,” she commented, “You’re quite charming. And if it isn’t enough time, then you have more than enough outside of this place, too.” She tapped her fingertips on the top of the bed. “Then, I suppose, it doesn’t matter if they hear your music then. They’re going to loathe you anyway,” she laughed, and then rolled her eyes, “I’m disappointed.”

Where God has punished me, he has also rewarded my strength.” Eve nodded. “Jonah is the best thing to have come from my past, I do not know where I would be without him.”

Catherine nodded, “Yes, absolutely. I find that the silver linings always outweigh the unfortunate happenings. Or, if they don’t, if I just believe they do, it makes things a lot easier for me.” She tilted her head, “Are you and Jonah in a relationship? It feels that way.”

“I understand that, but...I don’t know. Nevermind.” Catherine, since her experience, hadn’t felt the need to be very argumentative, so she decided on politely folding her hands in front of her and neglecting eye contact. She shrugged, “Some people don’t look at it that way. It may be really important to someone.”
