Catwoman and the Anniversary that DC Comics Forgot

I Know that I sound like a broken record at this point: but we are now into August and it is looking less and less likely that DC Comics will celebrate Catwoman’s 75th anniversary with special variant covers. In 2015 alone DC dedicated special variant covers for the anniversaries of the Joker, the Flash, and Green Lantern, as well as movie poster variants in March and the annual monster covers for October.

Judging by the way Lois Lane was nearly neglected in 2013 it’s seem like the only characters whose presence and contributions to legacy of their company that the publishers think are worthy of acknowledging are the one’s who they are most interested in actively promoting. What a shame that no female characters have garnered enough pop culture relevance to be deserving of her own covers. It was only after a fan twitter campaign did Lois Lane get any sort of special recognition. 

So where does that leave Catwoman and other female characters, for that matter?

Lois Lane and Catwoman are two of DC Comics’ oldest and most recognized women. They predate Wonder Woman by three and two years respectively. After 75 years they are two characters still being included in film and tv franchises (they’ve both had more film appearances than the Flash and Green Lantern), recognized widely by non comic book readers of all generations, have appeared in every derivative form of media, and have both had their own comic book series at one point or another. If Lois Lane and Catwoman aren’t receiving recognition it doesn’t look good for other female characters either.

When Wonder Woman, a celebrated feminist icon and one of the most widely known super-heroines celebrates her 75th in 2017, she will likely get the star treatment and to her credit may be too big of a character for just variant covers. If Wonder Woman doesn’t get variants than it would mean that no female character would yet to have the honor bestowed upon her. If she does, then great: but as a women you have to literally be to Wonder Woman to get a little bit of recognition?

 After much fan prompting DC announced the release of Catwoman’s hardcover anthology scheduled for November, and that’s great but the book will likely be available mostly if not exclusively online and costs $39.99 plus shipping. The cost and lack of accessibility means that most of the people likely to buy the book will already be hardcore fans of the character. Variants are a way of celebrating the legacy of a character across the board.

As of right now it’s looking as though Catwoman has hit the proverbial glass ceiling, and variant covers remain just for the boys.

Edit: I incorrectly stated that Lois Lane predates Wonder Woman by 3 years, when in fact it is by 4 years.

So I’ve Been Seeing Some Posts...

And they make me livid.

Posts about how writers who work with artists don’t deserve as much praise or pay.

I’ve seen posts about how writers are “just writing” and shouldn’t get commissions.

I’ve even gotten hate for briefly pondering getting commissions for small drabbles.

Let’s face one simple fact.

Tumblr- You only give a fuck about writers when we do shit for free.

Writers do as much work as any other artist. Just. As. Much.

We struggle just as much with getting exposure. We struggle just as hard at word choice as an artist does at shading. We fight just as much with plotlines as artists do with sketch lines.

Writers are not something to be put behind a less-than sign.

People seem really good at demanding fanfiction, they seem really good at demanding their favorite pairings their way. And they seem just as good as getting mad when writers actually want some praise or recognition for it.

Think for a minute if all fanfiction writers, if all authors period, just stopped writing. Imagine you woke up tomorrow and every fanfiction website was empty, every single story and drabble GONE.

You people would throw a fit and a half.

So the next time you get some stupid thought in your head that writing is not an art, and that writers are not artists?

Then ponder this:

If its so fucking easy, go do it yourself and stop crying for us to do it instead.
