writeblr intro

hello writing community! i'm cc, an aspiring writer who is attempting to get back into writing original fiction again after around ~4 or so years of fanfic writing.

i've interacted with the community before and this is not my first writeblr intro, but i really started to stop both doing original writing and interacting with other writers on tumblr after covid hit, but i'm feeling a burst of inspiration, so i figured why not take a second shot at this. hopefully talking about my wips online will give me the motivation to keep working on them

idk how to explain it but im never truly comfortable with the way people insinuate that all older folks are inherently bigoted. it always feels like it kind of hand-waves away personal responsibility like ohhhh grandpa cant help homophobic, hes old. well ive met plenty of older folks who are normal about gay people. i think grandpa could be better. i think we should hold grandpa to higher standards.

Might derail this post a little but uhh it sounds a little like ageism. I took a class this last semester about the psychology of aging and it was actually really fucking cool and interesting and may have helped me realize some implicit unknown biases i had against older folks.

Like we had a whole mentorship program that we did and it was really cool! And guess what! Older people are just like us! The lady I worked with made quilt books for kids called Quiet Books to help with learning and her partner did cool stuff with beehives! One mentor-mentee group wrote a song with a poem that was very emotional! Another group made a really cool painting! Not all of them were Weird about some stuff or Old Fashioned or even Inheritantly/Generationally bigoted! They’re just like us, with families and lives and hopes and dreams! They want to engage with people and learn new things and pursue passions and work they didn’t get to do when they were younger!

Obvs theres the whole thing about like, not outing yourself to someone you’re not sure will be safe to be around but people, that’s no reason to completely dismiss older folks. They’re people, just like us, with rich and complex and infinitely diverse lives that have a lot of wisdom and experiences younger folks don’t have. Maybe they can make mistakes but they can also learn to grow from those mistakes, and just because some people do hold those values doesn’t mean every adult over forty does.
