“Plenty that can be seen and unseen,” Zed admitted.

“Felt easier you mean,” she said quietly. “I know the feeling. You’re gone so long you don’t know how to go home despite knowing you’d be welcome if you did.”

Christian’s chest constricted at every word that dropped from her lips. Ghosts. Demons. Angels. Metas. Every reoccuring piece of lure brought another stone on his already burdened shoulders. He couldn’t dispute the validity of her truths because he also saw ghosts. Not the spooky kind but the lost souls that haunted his mind. Every person who had ever relied on him to protect them. Their faces had been permanently scarred in his soul; a constant reminder of his sins. That w a s n ‘ t the case for Marissa. She saw things that weren’t dreamt up in her own mind. PTSD wasn’t the cause of her plight.

 The heels of his hands pressed aggressively into the soft hollows of his eyes. This isn’t happening. I’m sober. Delusions like this came at the glossy bottom of a good bottle of gin. “So, let me get this straight,” his gaze lifted up to hers. No malice registering on his features but the unfurling rage for his own sins. “Jonathan knew you heard voices and your father killed our son because you needed to be clean?” The golf ball sized lump in the back of his throat bobbed with the realization. Marissa brought a certain kind of chaos into their lives. Was she the reason his brother had been condemned to death?

Christian took a step back, needing the physical distance to collect all the delusions that were mulling through his racing mind. “I don’t need to know anymore. I–I didn’t..I didn’t want to know half of what you told me.”

“I know, but I need you safe. There’s something coming. A darkness, unlike anything I’ve felt before. And honestly, you deserve to know that it wasn’t you who poisoned our family, our happiness. It was me and my family. We hurt you. I can’t make up for it, but I can keep it from happening again,” she offered.

She wished she could make this easier for Christian. It was a lot to take in. To find out that the things that go bump in the night can drag you to hell? Scared the crap out of her most nights. She couldn’t imagine what she would do if she was in Christian’s shoes. But he needed to know. She could sense a darkness coming unlike any she had felt before. He needed to be safe on the streets. While a demon or angel might now attack him directly, they could see hurt him.

“I don’t know how much Jonathan knew. I think he suspected. He was careful to clean after someone had been over. Wipe down cabinets, not leaving dishes in the sink. I think he knew something happened to me when I touched things. Slowly, the less I used the powers, the less active they were,” she explained.

Not sure what to do with this new information, Mick continued to stare. “I don’t trust ghosts, never have.”

“That’s a good mentality to have, but the ones you really have to watch out for are angels. Buggers are the most twisted of all of them. At least Demons you know you can’t trust. Angels look like the good guys.”

He had opened his mouth to retort that yes he was supposed to be here, thank you, he’d been here since Rip had started this team; but Gideon gave the perfect answer and he smiled, though the woman Ms. Martin’s next question erased the expression.

“Oh.”

“I did. Legally. But I wasn’t actually dead. Then I joined the Legends. So I haven’t been in Star City for a long time.”

“Oh, so you’re not one of my ghosts, always good to know when others can see you,” Zed said with a quicked grin. “Why let the world think you’re still dead,” she asked curiously.”

“Ghosts?!” Christian felt all rational beginning to drain from this situation. He felt the burn in his skin before saturating his thoughts. “You keep talking about these intangible fucking things. Ghosts. Do. Not. Exist.” His hands shook from the budding frustration that came with his grief. After all this time, he thought he’d finally forgiven her for walking away from him. For letting him fall into the darkness after they buried their son.

“Why did you leave? WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE OUR SON?”

She smiled the saddest smile and sat down, “They’re not intangible. I see them, Christian. Every day they’re around me. Since I was a little girl. It’s why my father wouldn’t let me out of my house when I was younger. I was the little girl who could see the future, the past, I could see the ghost and the angels, and the demons. I could see the powerful ones.

Then I met your brother and he taught me how to be normal. That girls weren’t supposed to talk to ghost or see these things. That most people couldn’t see them. I learned to ignore them and the more I ignored it the less I saw and heard and then he left us and I feel for the baby brother. The who gave me the most beautiful little boy in the world. Who I loved with everything in me, but my father hated him. Hated everything I had become. I denied the supernatural world. I had let myself become unclean, unworthy. A virgin psychic is a tempting offer. But I was neither a virgin or psychic anymore. I had to be purified. Sacerfice something to restore my purity. My father chose our son, my most favorite thing. The thing I loved more than you or myself. Alexander was the center of my world so he made the perfect sacrifice in my father’s eyes. So that’s what he did,” Zed said tears running freely down her face. “My father sucked the life out of our son and because I refused to believe what I was seeing, I failed Alex.”

“At the funeral was the first time I met Manny. Sitting beside that grave, I didn’t know his name at the time, but I knew what he was. I let everything in. The ghost, the visions, angels, demons, magic, I let it all in. Manny told me about the rising darkness. That my father planned to offer me to a powerful demon to invade the world. He told me of what was coming and how I needed to start looking for him. That he was the only person who could help me. Who could save you and Alex and protect people from dark magic like my father’s. I failed our son, but I’d never let my father hurt another person. Course if I had known what a pain in the ass John Constantine would be, I don’t know if I would have followed this path. “

“I know this doesn’t make sense. I know you won’t believe me. But I’m not crazy. I can do a reading on you. Tell you whatever you want to know. What do you need to see to believe?”

“So much for sneaking back on board…” Ray mumbled to himself, pushing up from the floor and trying to see what he’d tripped over. “Good morning, Doctor Palmer, might I suggest a change of clothes before the rest of the crew wake?” The physicist winced at the knowing tone in Gideon’s voice and he smiled a little sheepishly at the AI calling him out on his failed walk of shame. “Thanks, Gideon.”

“Wow, Sarah was right, they’ll let anyone on this boat,” Zed said with a smirk and a sip of her coffee. “Gideon, is he supposed to be here?” she asked the computer. 

She liked Gideon. Gideon didn’t lie, didn’t sugar-coat things, Gideon delt in facts. “Yes, Ms. Martin. This is Dr. Ray Palmer.”

Zed looked confused. “I thought you died?”

“They’re better than the Angels and Demons that come around. Only strong ghost talk. Most are just lost.”

“But at least then he has a fair chance. Angels, Demons, Magic, it has no reason to target him if I’m not here. I denied who I was for a long time and it cost us our son. I won’t do that to him again.”

Damn.. Alena didn’t really have anything to contest the woman’s claims. She may very well be telling the truth. Her place in their lives was just a benchmark for death but their lives wouldn’t be half as good without her.

“I get it. You’re practically the black death to them but it’s not your choice. You can’t take yourself away from them for their good without their permission. It’s a shitty self deprecating thing.”

“He was a good man. I loved him, very much. We may not have started as a love match but I fell of him easily. I killed our son, or at least our son was killed because of me. My father was insane. I never want to hurt Christian like that again.

Christian felt the low grade burn in her words. No. Not today. He didn’t know how long he could run from the truth but he wasn’t about to be crushed by it. “Get the fuck out of my head, Marissa.” He turned away from her. They danced around the memory of their son. If she knew all of this, why hadn’t she come soon? Or visited his grave? “You know jack shit and you know what you should get the fuck out of this city–it’s what you’re good at right? Disappearing when shit gets too real huh?”

“I’M NOT IN YOUR HEAD! THEY’RE IN MINE! ALL THE TIME,” she screamed at him. “I see them. I’ve always seen them. It’s how I knew things even when we were married. They tried to warn me and I ignored them because normal people don’t see ghost. I couldn’t stop it. I failed our son because I was so desperate to be normal and deny what I was told until it was too late.”

“And now all I hear is Manny’s yapping about finding John and not sticking to the plan. But I’m tired of hiding this from you. If it will help you finding happiness, you need to know what happen. So ask me, Christian! Ask me everything you wanted to but were scared to.”

Zed tried to focus on the young woman and ignore the screaming woman behind her. She was a ghost. Appartently on very close to this young woman.

“I honestly think sometimes it would just be safer to get as far away from these cities as I could….”

Zed had been distracted by the woman who stood behind the young woman, “I’m sorry, what,” Zed asked shaking her head.

“Neither did the last woman I slept with.” Christian pushed with a taut jaw. He couldn’t touch that subject. Not now with the way he’d fallen so far from grace. “So, you’re telling me you’re like Ms. Cleo?”

Zed narrowed her eyes, “And you try to sleep with anyone who doesn’t look like her because they’re not her.” She then rolled her eyes, “Would Ms. Cleo tell you that she’s talked to Jonathan and he forgives us or that you visit Alex’s grave on his birthday?”
