Though the tramp many times seemed happy go lucky, shaking things off, he was if you think about it - poor, homeless, disheveled and many times hungry, he had no history, where is he from, where is his family, how did he end up as a tramp. Through it all though he did desperately try to hold on to an air of dignity with his cane, his derby and his too tight jacket, perhaps he was a man of some success at one time. Weird questions I know but things I wonder.

After some convincing from Celeste, Pip caved into wearing a dress and going to Spring Formal. Of course, since not all issues have been solved with her, she can't help but cry being dressed this way. Please be kind to her, CC, she's still very tender about the subject!
Having mostly hand-me-downs means Pip's outfit is very gaudy, out of style, worn-out, and doesn't match or fit in places. But maybe that's the charm of it?

WARNING: This post discusses analyses of gender, sexuality, puberty, femininity, and menstruation. There is nothing vulgar written here, but if you are uncomfortable with those topics, then please do not expand this post.
Once the Spring Formal mini-event had been posted on CC, I spent a good amount of time giggling at the thought of Pip wearing a dress. I created Pip as a fairly androgynous character - while she has a feminine face and wide hips, I've never drawn her wearing anything outside of oversized men's pants (or, on occasion, her circus unitard) and I have a hard time imagining otherwise, hence the giggling.
I am very interested in women's issues. So after my initial amusement died down, I began seriously pondering about Pip and what femininity means to her.
I myself am very comfortable with my sexuality. That doesn't mean I'm open with it, I'm just comfortable with my sexual identity and understanding it. With that said, I think it's safe to explain that Pip has very little (if any at all) sexuality or sex appeal going for her. I suppose one could argue that her wide hips may symbolize at least some sort of sexual meaning, but I made her body type as such mostly for the visual character design.
I didn't want to leave it at "she has no sexuality and that's that" though. Sexual discovery is all a part of growing up; it's instilled in everybody in some way or form. And Pip is no exception to that rule.
Those of you who have read or watched some film version of Stephen King's Carrie may remember the scene where the titular character has her first period in the middle of showering after gym class. Due to her Christian fundamentalist mother never teaching her anything about puberty and menstruation, Carrie reacts hysterically, believing herself to be dying.
I imagine Pip's first period to be a very similar experience. Most likely, it happened when she was alone, at whatever alley her family had decided to take residence under, while her parents were away panhandling in the streets in an effort to find food or make money. Perhaps she had sat down on the pale concrete somewhere, and stood up to see the stain. I think anybody's imagination can visualize how an 11 or 12 year-old girl's reaction to bleeding would be. Now take that reaction to the next step when that little girl realizes that the bleeding is coming from a very personal area, and she has absolutely no knowledge of what's happening to her. It certainly would not have been unlikely for little Pip to go running into the streets, all decked in her rags-for-clothes, screaming for help and that she was dying.
What happened afterwards is up to interpretation. I know, I know, I'm her creator, I'm the one that should know all this. Perhaps her parents heard her screams. The discovery isn't really the important part, what matters is the result.
Of course, when it came down to it, being an only child, the job of educating Pip on her body's reproductive cycles came down to her mother. While Pip's mother was not so unlucky to be as uneducated as her daughter, she was also certainly not what you would call "teacher material" and had a difficult time verbalizing menstruation in terms that Pip would understand, other than "This is what it's like to be a woman."
After this harrowing experience, Pip tried to keep herself as far away from her femininity as possible. After-all, if being a women meant being "diseased" for days at a time, then why be a woman at all?
Pip grew up believing that her period was an ugly, filthy, horrendous disease that overtook her body for days at a time. Granted, many real modern women probably believe in this as well, but Pip did not have the comfort of fully comprehending her body's natural biological processes.
Interestingly enough, despite a woman's menstrual cycle being a perfectly normal, human process, it's hardly ever addressed in many forms of entertainment, whether it's movies, television, or books. Perhaps it comes down to how it's actually treated in real life - every woman must completely conceal the fact that she's going through her period every single month. It's "obscene" and "vulgar" to even discuss it with others.
But of course, all women know that imbalances in the body can wreak havoc on a menstruation cycle. While malnutrition and the stress of her lifestyle most likely caused Pip's period to skip many times over, having it happen more than once was more than too much for Pip. When it came down to it, Pip would spend many a day washing the cloth she'd used to catch her menstrual blood in a puddle of a secluded rain escape, far from any judging eyes, feeling ashamed and filthy.
On a deeper level, Pip's rejection of her femininity is also, in many respects, a reflection of what I like to call her Peter Pan complex. She is very childlike in many ways, from being unable to read/write, to having little sex appeal, to finding amusement in the smallest of things. Since menstruation can be considered a passage of womanhood, or adulthood, by refusing to acknowledge it, she refuses to grow up.
So. There's my way too long excuse of why Pip probably won't participate in the Spring Formal (as much as I would like her to). HAHA, TL;DR RIGHT? I don't think anybody wanted to ask her anyway. Haha, I'm sure nobody really cares about this, or everyone is too grossed out at this point to continue reading. If you did read all the way to this point, then thanks!
