Week Two
WEEK ELEVEN
After the first brainstorming session I was told that I need to do further research in how I wanted to present my series. I needed to find the deeper meaning behind what I was trying to illustrate. The feedback was incredibly helpful, because I was able to think about what I wanted my series to present and how I wanted to represent it. During the second brain storming session I felt much more confident when presenting my series to the class. My tutor said that I found solid background research pertaining to how I wanted to structure my series. The only feedback that I received was that I needed to widen my scope and not limit myself to only my neighborhood. There was also feedback on how I should crop my photos, to make the photography look symmetrical.
Overall, I am very impressed with my series. I feel that it represents my time in London clearly, while also reflecting my new experiences and opportunities that I have encountered while abroad.
WEEK FIVE
A Century of Photography, 1840 - 1940
Tilly Losch (1907 - 1975)
By E.O. Hoppe ( 1878 - 1972)
The photographs have been collected in the National Portrait Gallery since the opening in the mid 1800s. This particular photograph is very influential because it illustrates the strength and independence that is represented for woman. This photo was taken in response to the Representation of People act that influenced women’s voting rights.
The common thread that occurred throughout the exhibit was the powerful influence and influence that is presented. Everyone of the photos illustrate the story that they want to tell, what they endured or had to over come. During the time period of this exhibition there were various different movements that were being implemented regarding woman rights.
The reason that I selected this particular image was because I really resonated with what the photographer was trying to convey. This portrait is of a young woman completely capturing her face and expression. Having the expression of fierce and determination in response to the oppression of women. The composition of the photo like I stated before completely captures the entire face clearly having visibility on her face. The coloring is toned down, using a soft flash to illuminate al the features that are presented. You can also see the light reflection coming through her eyes, when she is making complete eye contact allowing me to know that the photographer was at eye level when taking this photograph.
This photograph is of a strong independent woman, fighting for her rights as a woman. Looking directly in the eye not having a trace of fear tells the audience the determination for equality. The photo is about fierceness and perseverance, Not giving up for what you believe in.
WEEK FIVE
Recreation
The original photo that I selected has the illustration of a man who is ready to light a cigarette in the city. I thought initially that this photo would have been easy to recreate, however it was much more difficult than I antipaciated. The photographer uses the light from the flash, along with the ambient light coming from the source of the match. I was able to identify the two light sources by observing the light reflecting on his whole face. My photo is of one of my friends who was ready to light up a cigarette. I decided to take a different approach to this photograph. Instead of capturing my subject about to light up, I captured him already lit up, with the lights behind him. This is one portion of the project that I found overall difficult, trying to capture the light from the outside along with the silhouette of his body while keeping the main room black. I believe that the reason the photographer chose to illustrate this picture is to capture time and living in the moment. You can clearly see the expression that is illustrated on his face, with the level of focus that is taken with effort to start the match. What I found a bit easy with this photo getting my subject to smoke a cigarette. Apart from that I found this photo difficult to recreate.
This is the first week of my stay in London, England. I chose these photos because I feel that they illustrated my tourist self, by exploring the main attractions that London has to offer. This is the start of what is to come. I want to to travel, learn new cultures and understand different traditions.
WEEK 10
I thought taking this photo would have been awkward and uncomfortable. In actuality it was not bad at all. I was sitting in the Old gym at Westminster when I heard two girls speaking in Italian. I didn’t know them so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to take the photo and meet new people. Her name was Maria, from Florence she her self was actually a photographer so she was more than willing to help me with this portrait. I learned from this project that sometimes it requires you to step put of your comfort zone to get the capture of something new. This can allow you to get the background information of the subject.
“Horn of Africa famine:Somalia, Ethopia and Kenya suffer worst drought
WEEK TEN
In class activity: Africa 1. Illustrates Travel: Trying to understand and connect with the people in the photographs, the buildings are in ruins and are noticeably left behind for a while. The relationship between the subject and the photographer are very significant because it marks an authoritative perspective. 2. Illustrates Malnutrition: The viewpoint this time is definitely with the photographer although the eyes of the subjects are looking the opposite way. There is a lot of sympathy going on in the photo because of the children, observance of hunger and pain. 3. Illustrates Ultimate malnutrition: The photos reinforce the size of the surroundings which make him appear even thinner. the subject is also alone, naked and bare. The photographer, this time, is low and close–which changes the dynamic of the photograph. The colors are also very dark and deep instead of vibrant and inviting. 4. Illustrates Traveling from drought: subjects were moving livestock, trying to find civilization, travelling onward with their backs toward the camera which desensitises the image. The photograph is a general shot as opposed to being invasive like the other photographs. Loses engagement because the subjects have their backs turned to the audience so we are unable to see the emotion and thought that is presented on the face.
WEEK TEN
Thomas Ruff:
Photographs 1979-2017
Common Thread: The photographic series consisted of many different types oh photographs, however the commonality amongst the photos was the art about photography. Ruff was interested in taking photos that mirror the fast pace of reality including culture politics and media. Generally his photos style ranged from portraits to pixelated images to negative and abstract work. Title of this Specific series: Negative Year: 2014-2015 Framing: The framing of the photograph is very straight on. It’s obvious that the photographer made her( the subject) to pose and stand in a certain way to capture what he wanted from her. The reason I chose this photo though was because of the kind and shapes this picture in particular makes. The shapes are so obvious that you have no choice to follow them with your eye. Attributes+meaning of photograph: The attributes contribute to the meaning of the photograph because the lines, shapes and just the negative itself is fierce. It’s forced upon your eye to look and actually stare. The complex patterns on her clothes also draw the attention. There were a lot if different contrasting colors that appeared in the photograph. What is the photograph of: Woman who is wrapped in some type of religious wear or maybe something that you’d only wear on a special occasion. While looking directly into the camera as if she is aware she is being recorded. What is the photograph about: the photograph, to me, is about a woman who is proud and fierce about her background or maybe simply about what she is wearing.
WEEK NINE
Title of the Exhibition: “Instant Stories: Wim Wenders Polaroids”
October 2017
Compositional Aspect: The framing of some of the photographs is direct. Meaning what ever the message that he is trying to convey can be easily captured in his photographs. The use of light that he utilises is from natural lighting. One of the various themes that we can observe coming from each of his pictures is spur of the moment type captures. Some are captured from a moving point of view while others are captured from a different lens within a lens. There are not many uses of shapes in his photo. I noticed that majority of the photos are from dull colours with a touch of vibrancy.
Meaning: The meaning of the photographs that Wenders has taken is all spontaneous, living in the moment. Capturing life as it passes by. I do not believe that there is a deeper meaning to the images just that life passes by in a glimpse and sometimes it needs to be captured to convey the importance of living each day likes it the last.
Of the photographs that I selected the first one is of glasses focusing in on the background of a city. I think it is about seeing life in different perspectives. Where the other photograph that I selected is of a quick snapshot of somewhere in the city. I think that this photograph is about life living in the moment. Could have been a pedestrian walking by and seeing something patriotic such as the flag and taking the photo quickly. Makes me think of there possibly being a protest or a parade that was happening at that moment. Overall I believe that the photos that were taken in this series represents things that can be found in the city that you are in. Wenders photos were all based out of California so having an insight of the atmosphere and the people that reside there.
WEEK NINE
4 Saint in 3 Acts - A snapshot of the American Avant-garde.
I believe this photograph is called Gertrude Stein, The Harlem Renaissance and the Politics of Race and Representation. The original photo that I selected is on the right. It is of a photoshoot that is being taken of a woman holding what appears to be a dove. We can see that it is from deep in the past based off of the ataire that the ladies are wearing. Its about beauty. How beauty comes in all shapes, colors and sizes. The cropped photo is to the left. You can see how I cropped out the audience to give it more of a allusive feel. When looking at the photo we can first see that it is of a lady who is holding a bird. Not positioning to pose, or pose ready to take a picture. It feels like a moment that was spontaneously caught. Going into that I believe the photo is about life and serenity. It looks as though the woman is completely content with where she is and what she is doing. Not having to put a facade on for an audience. I choose the cropped picture of my captioning. The first caption title I choose is Serenity. The reason behind my caption is because as explained before it looks as if this photo is candid and completely spontaneous. I love how it looks like the woman is by herself having a moment between herself and another life. Almost as if they are alone taking each other in, having no fear for on another. The second caption that I feel represents this photo is Beautiful Color. To me doves that is what doves represent and from observing the cropped edition we can clearly see emotion that is transpiring between the two life forms. Noting having a care for the outside world and what it has to say. The reason that I called it Beautiful Color is because we can see the contrasting colors represented in the photograph. Also in times like this being african american was not recognised as beautiful.
WEEK EIGHT
My Response A. The composition of the photo that I took is directly in the middle of the photo. Because the door was so large I captured it on a bit of an angle. B. I used natural lighting to capture this photograph. Opposed to the original one that I selected by Lorenzo, this picture utilizes many different vibrant colors. C. The mood of this photo is different than the original. I get a sense of old v new generation. There is obviously vandalism that occurred on this older structure but it also buts a sense of culture in with the photo. D. This response picture is of a door that I took in Denmark. It is old but not as old as the previous photos that I selected. This door is a bit more modern and up to date. E. This one is different than the other photos because it has the usage of colors that were acquired with age. From younger generations individuals taking it upon themselves to vandalize something that has been structurally there for a long time. The process of taking these photos made me visualize the maturity of structures themselves. Taking them made me more present and emphasis the importance it is to maintain our old structures. I have been learning these steps more and more in class. Making me observe the world in a different place and setting. This allows me to look under the surface. Progress Report: My photographic series is coming together swimmingly! I just need to wiggle around with the editing but I am really enjoying my time with this serious. In result to this series I am observing more and more with each day unconsciously. Taking more appreciation of what my project is on. The feedback will be very beneficial and informative. So I will utilize what is being said to me and take it to help me.
WEEK EIGHT
Recreation of Inspiration A. The composition of this photograph is a bit different than one that inspired me. The focus point os of the door that is portrayed directly in the middle of the photo not having any extra space in the shot. There is the usage of the same old mature style that is used in the original only this one has a bit more color. B. The usage of light is natural. The previous picture only had soft color full grays and blacks. That wasn’t an reflection in how the photo was taken that is just what the subject had. This photo is a bit more vibrant having more colors in the portrait. However, though it is a bit more colorful we can really get a sense of the age that is presented. C. The mood of this photograph is a bit more uplifting than the previous picture that was used. The mood has more color making it more vibrant and happy. There is still a sense of maturity because we can see the representation of the age presented well. D. The photo that I captured is my recreation of Lorenzos photo of the door. This is my creation of an older door only mine represents more color. We can see thats old with the wear and tear of the surrounding frame. E. I interpreted this photo as the same with the original one. Abstractly I believe this door represents age and maturity. There is a sense of the door being there for quite some time, having the broken wood panels on the door, the old stone that frames the door itself. However it also seems that it can still function properly meaning with age can still mean relevant.
WEEK EIGHT
Inspired by Lorenzo Castore - Casarola A. The composition has various different angles to the portrait. The door is places in the middle of the camera however to the left there is a large space that draws the eye to it creating to portions of the photo. B. The usage of the light does not use color. There is a strong use of natural lighting. The lighting is not of vibrancy or brightness but more subtle tones and colors. Creating almost a black and white photograph even though its just the subject that is dull in color. C. The mood of the portrait is calming. There is not any urgency that follows it. Having such neutral colors makes the viewer focus more on what the portrait is entirely. Its direct and its tranquil. D. The portrait that I selected to exemplify is of of a old arches door made of wood that is surrounded by stone. Having dull and soft tones of color creates the sense of maturity to the door. E. Abstractly I believe this door represents age and maturity. There is a sense of the door being there for quite some time, having the broken wood panels on the door, the old stone that frames the door itself. However it also seems that it can still function properly meaning with age can still mean relevant.
WEEK FOUR
My Personal Photographic Series
When deciding what photos I should try to capture to represent something beautiful to ugly I chose my three selected photos from above. The reason I chose them is because they all have a common theme. With age come ugly. I am implying with age makes objects worn out, rotten and even dead. For instance, the carrots where once a vibrant orange vegetable, then with time it lost its colour, became dried out and got rotten to the point of no consumption. The sign was once in pristine conditions - new paint brand new flowers from above, but then comes time. As time went on the beautiful sign got scuffed, dirty and now the white paint is black paint. The leaf represents the death, because it was once high in the trees, vibrant and living now with age and time it has fallen to the ground, losing its vibrancy...losing life. That is why selected these photographs to illustrate that nothing stay beautiful forever.
WEEK FOUR
LENNY, MINNEAPOLIS, MN
ALEC SOTH
2002
The compositional aspect of this photography is of a self portrait. The main subject is to the left of the photo creating a two piece composition. The the right of the photo we can observe there is a tabs with a soft flower. The subject to the left is of a man in underwear with a dark black dog between his legs. The contrast between the white room and table make it difficult for the audience to view the dog. At first glance, I was unable to accurately describe what the man was holding - until you look closer. This image utilised natural lightings, as there was not flash. We can observe there is lighting coming from the room itself along side the windows in the background. These aspects influence the meaning of the photograph by us fully focusing on the human and his dog. If there contrast between the colours where black and white than that would distract the eyes to everywhere else in the photo other than what we are suppose to be drawn to. As stated before the composition of this illustrate is broken into two parts directly down the middle of the photo. Just based off observation I would conclude that this is of a man and his dog in the kitchen.
WEEK FOUR
ADELYN, ASH WEDNESDAY NEW ORLEANS, LA
2002
ALEC SOTH
The compositional aspect that is presented in this photograph is the clear focus of the subject in the portrait. The illustration is used with vibrant colours, specifically the hair of the subject in contrast with the grey ash cross that is so visible on the forehead. here is a strong use of natural lighting, we can see that the light is coming from the left of the image, almost as if the subject is looking up into it. In the background there are lines that are presented sectioning off the photo into four parts from the background.
I feel that the use of these compositional aspects help influence the overall quality of the portrait that is presented. For example, the vibrant colours of the subjects hair, and clothes in contrast to the neutral background really allow us the audience to visualise on the pale skin to the grey cross that lies on the forehead - drawing all of our attention to where the photographer wants us to look. Because it is a portrait we are able to get a full understanding of the emotion that is on the face of the subject- where if it were a landscape we would have been distracted with something irrelevant to the image at large.
I think that this illustration emphasises “Sleeping by the Mississippi” in a way that the other photographs fail to do. This exhibit was to focus on the poetic nature behind the meaning of this exhibit. We see a human with tattoos, orange hair and colourful shit standing there with an expression of contentment. While clearly seeing the cross across the forehead. Allowing us to have the presumption that they are of a holy faith.
WEEK FOUR
FORT JEFFERSON MEMORIAL CROSS BEETLES + HUXLEY 2002 Attributes cause meaning: The attributes that were chosen for the photograph make the audience question what is happening in this illustration. We can have the presumption that they are at a cemetery, and these are the workers that are employed their. However, that is just what is being illustrated on the front. The cross symbolizes purity and religion making this more faith connotation. Compositional Aspects. : The photographs compositional aspects focus on the vantage point, space and lineage of the illustration. Having various open space leaves distracts the viewer to getting a full understanding of what is fully represented. There is a ton of detail and texture from the bottom half of the photograph. The composition is split into two half’s, on the top we can clearly observe the cross, having the natural light that dims the top of the photo which allow our eyes to to focus in the bottom half of the photo. I think the meaning of this photo illustrates the how the emotion is influential to its location. This photo can possibly represent workers that are on break, however there is a large Cross that Is placed behind them, making me wonder if they question their faith, or if were lead onto the wrong path.
