Pumpkin is a piebald ball python (Python regius) bred by Kevin McCurley. The unique jack-o-lantern spot was not intentional, but rather a random color pattern that sometimes shows up in piebald snakes. (Source)

Ghost Hog for 2019 Free Comic Book Day
Free Comic Book Day announced their 2019 lineup, and Ghost Hog is among them!
PORTLAND, OR., Dec. 20, 2018 ā This Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), Oni Press is excited to announce a 2019 Silver Offering from Eisner-nominated cartoonist Joey Weiser (Mermin), featuring two all-new stories about Truff, the main character in his upcoming all-ages graphic novel, Ghost Hog! Truff is the ghost of a young boar. With her friends Claude and Stanley, she helps other denizens of the forestāespecially if theyāre spirits like her! Of course, sometimes the others donāt want her helpā¦. āI love Free Comic Book Day because itās not only a great chance for publishers and retailers to show off whatās best on the shelves, but itās a chance for local communities to gather around a mutual love for comics,ā said Joey Weiser. āSo, I was super stoked to contribute to FCBD with a pair of Ghost Hog short stories! These stories are not included in the graphic novel, and give readers a peek at the world of specters and strange creatures theyāll find in the book.ā ā About Free Comic Book Day: Free Comic Book Day is a single day in the first week of May when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. The Ghost Hog Silver Offering is available at participating comic shops on May 4, 2019, and the full 168-page graphic novel will be available everywhere on May 7, 2019.
Iām very excited to be a part of Free Comic Book Day, because (as stated above) I totally love FCBD! And the fact that the Ghost Hog graphic novel will be hitting shelves mere days after folks can pick up the free comic is absolutely perfect!

A new species is evolving before scientistsā eyes in the eastern United States.
Wolves faced with a diminishing number of potential mates are lowering their standards and mating with other, similar species, reported The Economist.
The interbreeding began up to 200 years ago, as European settlers pushed into southern Ontario and cleared the animalās habitat for farming and killed a large number of the wolves that lived there.
That also allowed coyotes to spread from the prairies, and the white farmers brought dogs into the region.
Over time, wolves began mating with their new, genetically similar neighbors.
The resulting offspring ā which has been called the eastern coyote or, to some, the ācoywolfā ā now number in the millions, according to researchers at North Carolina State University.
Interspecies-bred animals are typically less vigorous than their parents, The Economist reported ā if the offspring survive at all.
Thatās not the case at all with the wolf-coyote-dog hybrid, which has developed into a sum greater than the whole of its parts.
At about 55 pounds, the hybrid animal is about twice as heavy as a standard coyote, and her large jaws, faster legs and muscular body allow her to take down small deer and even hunt moose in packs, and the animal is skilled at hunting in both open terrain and dense woodland.
An analysis of 437 hybrid animals found that coyote DNA dominates her genetic makeup, with about one-tenth of its DNA from dogs, usually larger dogs such as Doberman pinschers and German shepherds, and a quarter from wolves.
The animalās cry starts out as a deep-pitched wolf howl that morphs into higher-pitched yipping ā like a coyote.
Her dog DNA may carry an additional advantage.
Some scientists think the hybrid animal is able to adapt to city life ā which neither coyotes or wolves have managed to do on their own ā because her dog ancestry allows herĀ to tolerate people and noise.
The coywolves have spread into some of the nationās largest cities ā including New York, Boston and Washington ā using railway corridors.
The interbreeding allows the animal to diversify her diet and eat discarded food, along with rodents and smaller mammals ā including cats, which coywolves eat skull and all ā and they have evolved to become nocturnal to avoid humans.
The animals are also smart enough to learn to look both ways before crossing roads.
Not all researchers agree the animal is a distinct species, arguing that one species does not interbreed with another ā although the hybridās existence raises the question of whether wolves and coyotes are distinct species in the first place.
But scientists who have studied the animal say the mixing of genes has been much faster, extensive and transformational than anyone had noticed until fairly recently.
ā(This) amazing contemporary evolution story (is) happening right underneath our nose,ā said Roland Kays, a researcher at North Carolina State.

THIS SHIT IS SO WILD AND ITāS ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING. If youād like to watch the entire Nature documentary referenced in thatĀ āwatch this reportā link, you can find the whole thing on Youtube. Itās a terrific documentary and a really interesting look at an animal most people donāt even seem to realize exists. The extent to which coywolves have adapted to urban life and the ways in which theyāre very distinct from the species theyāve sprung from is pretty incredible.
