does anyone have links to any good resources on how to write an image description/id? i want to follow whatever procedure is standard here on tumblr (do you use read-mores? brackets?)

hi, thank you for trying to make posts more accessible!! i haven't been using a screen reader for very long but i do have a few tips.

please don't put the description under a readmore, as this makes it much harder to access, but you can use brackets and the like!

put the description as close to the image it's describing as possible. if you're the one adding the image and the description, it should go before any commentary on the post.

try to avoid excess line breaks if possible. screen readers (at least the ones I've used) read paragraph-by-paragraph, and it's annoying to have to continually select a bunch of different lines, like, for each line of dialogue in a comic or something. big chunks of text are much easier to listen to.

conversely, try to avoid run-on sentences! i personally have auditory processing issues, so it's easier if you include commas and sentence breaks. that gives my brain a chance to process things more easily. you can add punctuation and remove spelling errors, and should remove quirks from transcriptions as well. accessibility is more important than total accuracy!

if you're not sure if a post is accessible and you really wanna go the extra mile, you can always have a screen reader read it out for you! i think one comes built in with most modern phones or computers, but if not you can just plug it into the pronunciation function of google translate, which i believe just uses the standard google tts engine.

that's all i can think of right now, but anyone else can feel free to add more!

Also, this discord server is dedicated to image descriptions (link). The folks there are extremely friendly & happy to look over IDs or answer specific questions!

Sketchup is a GODSEND for drawing environments and mechanical objects. you can find 3d models for almost anything in the world, and also build your own scenes! a lot of professionals in comics use this for interiors (and it’s freeee) it’s not as helpful for figure drawing, but you can find a lot of different models in the 3dwarehouse
