I think the reason I like qiu haitang so much is because just like shen jiu, she's not a perfect victim. She was vengeful and ignorant, and so incapable of accepting the truth it literally killed her. I think the fandom glosses over her because it's hard to think about someone that is both in the right and in the wrong so we just ignore her character. Qiu haitang they could never make me hate you

Doomed siblings have me on a chokehold in a way no trope can ever achieve. Something so gut wrenchingly beautiful about two kids going through unimaginable trauma and coming out damaged forever. I always eat it up. Maybe they stay together and find solace only in each other, used and kicked out by society! Maybe they end up on opposite sides of the war! Maybe they end up betraying one another! Maybe one of them dies haunting the narrative forever! Maybe one of them destroys the world for the other! So many endless tragic possibilities!

One of the quickest ways a good writer can embarrass themselves is to poorly render an accent.

Struggling to speak English as a second language is a narratively interesting and culturally relevant experience, but also tricky to render well in printed English. It is one hell of a needle to thread. You have to focus on how the world infantilizes a person for speaking sub-standard English, without infantilizing the person.

When successful, I think you can show a great richness of character by how someone butts up against the limitations of their language. When you fail though you end up writing the Wardine Be Cry chapter of Infinite Jest.
