TikTok is free ads for self diagnosing yourself with rare or even unreal disorders and also an ad for being "alt" by buying very normal clothes from shein. Like it convinced you experiencing regular human emotions makes you special and disordered (cool!) and that dressing in common clothing that isn't that mainstream, like a white shirt with a few frills and a brown skirt is somehow alternative. There's no culture around music anymore the trends have no meaning. Things like goth emo scene had music as the whole point. Nowadays all alt culture is just focusing on looking conventionally hot in clothes you only see in 6 out of 10 people ( so rare and alternative!). Also if you sometimes have moodswings you have DID or BPD. If you can't pay attention to anything longer than a TikTok you have ADHD because consuming hundreds of 13 second long videos definitely doesn't affect your brain. It's very sad
"It’s often unhealthy to hyper-analyze your sexuality to the point where how you experience it changes where you belong. This is why the idea that broader terms are somehow more restrictive is baffling. Continuously breaking labels down and creating terminology for each facet of one’s identity shrinks communities until it’s just one person convinced that they’re the only one who relates to their experiences. It isolates people and ignores the importance of individuality within a collective identity."
On Hyperpersonalized Sexual Identity
The author also dropped some gems in the last paragraph of the short article:
[text: Having a plethora of specific atomized sexualities discourages broad alliances and forming solidarity over shared experiences. Instead, it forces people to over-analyze themselves and focus on how they’re different from others rather than what they have in common with them. We should embrace the many ways we experience our attraction, not dissect them into different ‘types’ that we mustn’t ever conflate — sectioning everyone off over the most minor contrasts does us no favors. We should approach sexual liberation with collectivism, not individualism.]
sorry but who actually wants gay rep in marvel movies. like who wants to see that. who tf wants to see two bland and utterly sexless characters in cgi clothing who communicate entirely through snappy one liners fall in what can generously be described as Love just bc they're lesbians this time. gay rep in a marvel film would be the cinematic equivalent of an Old Navy Pride Month Collection. I hate to say it but even the general concept of being gay would be polluted if there was a gay lead in a marvel film. being gay wouldn't be cool anymore if there was a gay lead in a marvel film. is that what you want? for being gay to not be cool anymore? I hope every marvel character is straight forever
My dear lgbt+ kids,
It can be helpful to think of your label as a pattern of attraction.
The people you have a crush on or fall in love with usually fit into that pattern: If you’re a guy and you usually fall for guys, you show a pattern of attraction for guys. That’s enough to identify as gay.
The “pattern theory” can take some pressure of you. Many definitions of labels are pretty strict. But not everyone fits into tiny, narrow boxes.
Maybe you usually fall for guys but you had a crush on a girl before. Or you only had crushes on guys so far and you think it will stay that way but you’re not 100% sure. Or… you probably see where I’m going: Feelings are complex.
It’s easy to get caught up in definitions and feel like you’re not “allowed” to use certain labels. But labels don’t need to have hard edges. It’s enough if a pattern is there.
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

i feel like my continually deepening preference for identifying with terms like transsexual, dyke, faggot, is in part because theyre the least likely to be marketed back to me by old navy

not to be an old cranky leftist but going forward i think those of us who live in the us need to remember a protest is not a group powerwalk to register polite disapproval with those in power
a protest is an implied threat. a protest says there are a lot of us, and we do not like what you’re doing. we are giving you a chance to course correct before we take things to the next level.
if there’s no shared commitment to the potential of moving to that next level: a protest is useless and essentially just public performance art.
points to a sign that says “sometimes two people from the same marginalized community will want/need two very different things from their representation in fiction and they should both be allowed to find and make that representation to suit their own needs and neither should be criticized for not making the representation that the other wants”
like, for example, if one trans person is dealing with hostility from their family and their own internalized transphobia and they’re comforted by seeing a trans character face those same things, then that’s fine and they should be allowed to. if another trans person finds those kinds of stories bleak and disheartening and would prefer to see a trans character with caring loved ones and who takes pride in their identity, then that’s also fine and they should be allowed to. neither of them is doing the other any harm by looking for or making the content they personally want to see.
whenever there's a noble girl in fantasy or historical fiction who's like "i HATE embroidery it's boring and dumb" to show how Not Like Other Girls she is i foam at the mouth. do you have any idea how cool and interesting embroidery is? fuck you.
also embroidery is super useful as a way to protect your clothing from tears or to hide tears in the fabric. visible mending but if it's done right you can't even tell it's mending

there’s something that makes me very very emotional about the fact that the main asian actors in everything everywhere all at once came to the movie on very different trajectories - michelle yeoh is an internationally recognized legend of hk action cinema, ke huy quan starred in two blockbusters as a kid before being forced to step away from acting for 20 years, james hong is probably THE single most prolific actor in hollywood, and stephanie hsu has been on broadway and tv but never starred in a major film - and yet when all of them read the script they thought to themselves “yes, this is all i’ve ever wanted”
it’s about james hong being in a triumphantly empathetic film with asian leads after 70 years of watching the landscape for asian actors change with his own eyes, it’s michelle yeoh being taken seriously as a leading actress who can anchor a movie with both humor and heart, it’s ke huy quan getting to play all the roles he never got to play over the last two decades, it’s stephanie hsu bursting onto the scene as a rising star next to all these established actors by walking the path that they helped pave
and it’s not just the actors either! andy and brian le, the film’s fight choreographers (and ahem trophy fight scene duo), learned martial arts by watching michelle yeoh’s movies growing up. when ke huy quan’s stunt double first came to america, he learned english by watching ke huy quan in indiana jones. echo quan (the film’s on-set translator) couldn’t get work in hollywood for years despite having worked extensively in hong kong cinema and eeaao was her first job in the industry. the importance of the connections we form and the thrill of new possibilities and new lives are woven into the very fabric of this movie’s creation
everything everywhere all at once is about intergenerational trauma. about depression and passive suicidality and the gravitational appeal of nothingness. about aging, getting older in your twenties and getting older in your fifties. about the specific hurt mothers can cause their daughters and daughters their mothers. about the harsh reality of the immigrant experience and the american dream. but it’s mostly about kindness and family and it’s about choosing to sit at home talking about taxes with someone who loves you, and it’s about telling your daughter that you’d choose her over the entire universe, and it’s about how even in the universes where life didn’t form, love can still exist. and it’s really all of that at once.
If tumblr ever hands out verified accounts I hope it only goes to Monterey Bay Aquarium’s and literally no one else’s.
