went to the doctors outlined my symptoms said hey I think it might be POTS and instead of saying is it anxiety he just did tests and referred me to a specialist whilst saying I was probably correct!

step 2 is finding a singular doctor in the whole UK that will diagnose hEDS instead of saying "yeah almost definitely but I don't want to diagnose that"

i think both can be true that rachel reid’s writing gets hated on because she’s a woman (more specifically a woman writing m/m romance) AND that there are genuinely problematic elements in her writing.

like. yeah. she calls her characters stupid sometimes— i do that too as a writer! and her writing prose isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s not unreadable either. those critiques are just nothingburgers blown out of proportion.

however.

her handling of shane as a character, no matter how well-intentioned she was or how much she loves him, was very sloppy and offensive at times! and it’s okay to not like her writing for that reason and to critique it!!! it’s good and healthy to critique these things!!!

the way shane is described and positioned in his relationship can be racist, and maybe it’s a bit ableist how he is an Autistic Hockey Savant while she simultaneously calls him less intelligent than his partner, and her vehemently denying him having an eating disorder and defending it as “just a performance diet” or “many athletes do this”— just because a lot of athletes have these weird, strict diets doesn’t mean that’s healthy or normal or not disordered.

do i think rachel reid is a horrible racist ableist monster? no. do i think she should have (and still should) do a bit more research when writing experiences different from her own? yeah probably. i think that would help.

(also! i don’t think every white person who writes a character that isn’t white should have to make racism a part of their stories. but you shouldn’t write a story that includes racism/other big issues like that in the periphery and severely underbake those topics/storylines and expect readers to not have something to say about that.)

I have a constant need to consume in every way, from books, films and music to people's own expressions of themselves online and in person. The issue is I then take this knowledge from my consumption and absorb it into my own self, leaving me a mimic and a reflection rather than my own true self. I then look for this true version of myself by watching videos of people talking about how they found themselves and then realising that I am once again trying to copy their own expressions rather than creating my own.

Can I ever be my true self if all I do is over-consume?
