"Did you even kiss the brick?"

Mother fucker that brick youre talking about is my WIFE that I kissed at the alter settled down and had 2 children with. Of course I kissed it. I made out with it even before throwing it at your face! Dont ever question me again!

Despite everything he hopelessly wished for.

Flamebae understands perfectly well why he likes Robert.

Yes, his dimples and toothy grin were too cute. Yes, he was adorably pathetic in the same way a scraggly kitten found in a dumpster could be and yes, Flamebae understood how exactly he could rectify this disaster of a man to comply with his standards.

First issue of the matter was how thin and sullen the man looked, of course there was a four-month-long coma to blame for the loss in is muscles and strength. But that wasn’t a viable excuse now that he’s able to feed him, train him and spoil him a bit. That little twunk of man was going to get some weight and be put back into shape for Flamebaes and only Flamebaes viewing pleasure (and for Robert’s health allegedly)

Of course, Flamebae attempted to vaguely care for Robert’s reactions to what he was doing. But in truth, the last thing he ever wanted was to make his dispatcher feel uncomfortable, so he was courteous enough to give him a way out.

“Hey Bob-Bob, make sure you eat this before you pass out from malnutrition again you idiot.” Robert feels an unmistakable and familiar heat emanate behind him as a Tupperware container lands in front of him on the lunchroom table. Feeling the fiery body of Flamebae loom over his form as he remains seated. “You’re seriously not giving me your lunch, are you?” Robert turns to face him, Flambae’s face fixed in its usual sneer, but something slightly uncreased in his brow when his eyes land back on the smaller man’s face.

“No. It’s leftovers. Don’t give any to your miniature cow.”

He saunters out of the room without another word. Door slamming behind him. Outside, he listens to the happy sounds that Robert makes as he eats, everyone tries their best to hide their cackles as they witness the crimson blush that reaches from the tips of Flamebae’s ears down to the exposed plains of his chest.

The flood gates open, but it’s somehow still nothing like how he expected.

Flamebae no longer crashes Robert’s workouts just to gawk at him, instead they do it together, spotting and arguing with each other in equal measures. They find little restaurants across Torrance and Los Angeles when they both stay back late. He witnesses Robert attempting to buy some new clothes for work and personally stylises his wardrobe to something more than just business shirts and sad pairs of hoodies and sweats.

“Why do you do this for me Flamebae?”

“What?”

“The workouts, the food and the clothes. You don’t need to feel obligated to be my saviour or feel personally responsible for my failures.”

Flamebae can’t help but lovingly scowl at him, so wonderful and dense it makes him die and be reborn inside.

“Trust me Bob-Bob. Your personal failures are your own. I don’t want credit for that shit. What does matter is that you don’t end up as some sad, tasteless, loveless dweeb for the rest of your life. That’s embarrassing for me, means I haven’t done my job properly.”

Robert then lifts a brow, “What job exactly?”

Flamebae rolls his eyes, “Not having a loser dispatcher telling me what to do duh."

Something inside him rejoices when Robert slowly learns not to push him away. To finally get that he’s not an inconvenience to be around. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll understand that he doesn’t want to change him fully. He just wants Robert to be happier, healthier more alive.

He knows this devotion is mostly one-sided. He knows that Robert thinks this is all too repay him for what he did as a Villian, he’s willing to do all of this under the guise of redemption to spend time with the man. He’s just glad Robert never seems to mention or question any of it. Just quietly accepting whatever Flamebae gives him because he’s too deprived and kind to refuse it.

But things start getting strange.

Robert invites him over to his place to watch shitty movies and trashy reality tv after bad days filled with unsuccessful shifts. He’s somehow notices when Flamebaes on the verge of an episode before he realises itself and pulls him away for a pep-talk-speech before he does something he regrets. Whenever Robert has good news, he’s the first person he messages or calls when it happens.

It's wonderfully terrifying. It’s almost perfect. But he’s too greedy, he wants more.

The weirdest part is when Robert starts getting sappy on him and it’s starting to drive Flamebae insane.

The Z-team are taken to some black-tie special conference event. He helped pick out Robert’s ensemble, he salivates at the sight of him but also wants him to stay sealed away from the public eye forever so no one can get their greasy mitts on him. His hard work has paid off, Robert is looking better then ever has, even better than his Prime of being Mecha man. He can see the lustful vultures circling around him, wanting a chunk of his dispatcher for themselves. Flamebae can feel the jealously surging through him, almost as powerful as the flames constantly dwelling and blazing within himself.

He lets Robert do as he pleases.

But he can’t bear to watch it as he does.

Flamebae sneaks away to some rich farts garden outside to hide clear his head.

For whatever reason Robert appears next to him. Breathless. as if he was running. He claims to have been running away from the demands of the drunken rowdy gaggle ex-criminals that he calls his friends/co-workers.

The clear Californian sky glitters overhead, warm twinkling lights bathing the scrubs in greenery in a dazzling glow. They walk together side by side, their calloused hands brushing against each other with every other step they take in tandem. Robert stops at some strange red blooms.

“Why are you starting sad lumpy looking flowers? You wishing you could give them to your non-existent girlfriend? That’s pretty depressing Bobert.” He crowds into Robert’s space beside him, close enough to feel the warmth of his body, leaning his head down over his shoulder to match Robert’s line of sight. He has a small, contented smile on his face, an almost constant sight that never fails to make his heart buzz within his chest.

“They’re called Banksias. These flowers need fire to grow.”

“Are you seriously bullshiting me? Flowers need water to grow. Where you not taught basic plant biology-”

“No! Seriously! I heard Mal talk about them. These are Australian flowers. During the summer months, the land becomes irritable and prone to forest fires. When the wildfires spread, the flames carry the flowers seeds. In the wake of the destruction. These beautiful, perfect things bloom through the ash. He- they bring life into something that is wholly undeserving of a second chance. Of anything.”

Flamebae isn’t strong enough to handle the gentleness and reverence in his tone. The way his stupid face has softened into something so fond. His cheeks just the faintest pit red in the dim light. Earnest brown eyes turn back to Flamebae in the intention unreadable in the dark, his hand awkwardly scratching his neck.

“It kinda reminds me of someone I know. Someone I care about enough that I know I can’t afford to hide it from him.”

Oh.

Oh, holy mother of fucking shit. This gorgeous, heartfelt idiot of a man wants him back.

He surges forward, one hand grasping onto Robert’s tie and his other hand cradling his stubbly jaw and pulls Roberts lips above to his own. They are chapped from the cold, tasting slightly of champagne and pastry lingering on his tongue. The smaller man melts in his arms, pressing back into the kiss, his arms wrapping around his shoulders, fingers digging into the fine fabric of his suit jacket.

Flamebae understood that wishes never got him very far.

If Flamebae could wish such a thing. He’s never wanted Robert to leave him for a second. He’d carve an empty place within himself where Robert could live within him. Cocooned and metamorphized as one. If he had his wish he’d live in that moment forever.

Flamebae didn’t understand anything at all.

Every pressing of their lips was another wish destined to be fulfilled.

I have this thought worm that won’t go away, so you are all subjected to it as well

Robert hasn’t had a single normal relationship in his whole 30ish years of living. I’m talking friends with benefits gone wrong, messy situationships, and relationships that were built upon the novelty of him being Mechaman (it never ends well)

I feel as though this has left Robert to think that no one actually wants him for him, (because when the fantasy of Mechaman wore off, they never wanted the man behind the suit.)

Robert still allowed these people to treat him poorly, because love is to fully give yourself to someone like sacrifice right? His father and his father before him loved so much and they gave their lives to others, so that must be the way things are, right?

He wants to be loved so badly, he has and will continue to give up everything he has to keep some for himself. Even if it kills him.

But then it almost did.

After the explosion, love is the last thing on Robert’s mind.

Robert is so tired. He’s got so much to do, repairing the mecha man suit, dispatching and dealing with the clusterfuck of issues he’s juggling. It’s just easier to just give up.

He has robbed himself of the family legacy of dying in heroic glory and he has robbed himself of the noble love that comes with it. (Not that he felt that he deserved it anyway)

That is until Flambae came along.

Flamebae once he got over his desire to constantly punch the man realised that it may of been a cover for something else.

The between the insults, the unwanted nicknames and terms of endearment was pretty much invisible. If they had been anywhere else other than the SDN they probably would’ve been sleeping together by now.

Flamebae wants nothing more than to fling himself back into the pit of anger, crime and lack of commitment that hes just crawled out of.

But it’s that stupid bitch Bobert that keeps reining him back in.

The dispatcher is always in his ear, his right tumbled voice lingering in his head, guiding him, nurturing him, steering him to do acts of good, to control his impulses and showing him how to be the hero he’s always wanted to be. Steadfast in his dedication to make him the best he can be despite the frustrations and endless shit he throws on his precious pretentious Bob Bob

It never ceases to make Flamebae feel invincible when he gets a genuine, dimpled smile and round of praise from the dispatcher when he actually listens to him during a successful mission.

So yeah, Flamebae realises painfully quickly that he’s halfway in love with his depressed, overworked, brown doe eyed dispatcher.

Very few people have ever held this much hope in Flamebae before (minus his sister and niece) and damn if that doesn’t make him swoon a bit from the sheer amount determination Robert has in him and the Z Team and he wants- no- needs to reciprocate that same hope.

But then he finds out that he’s mecha man.

Flamebae feels betrayed, fooled and strangely heartbroken. He feels like something inside of him slowly rots.

But then shroud happens, and he’s forced to confront something about himself.

He hates mechaman. But he loves the man beneath the suit more.

Flamebae understands now that Robert ruined his life only a little bit. He was already spiraling , the loss of his fingers caused the complete breakdown of himself.

Robert has compensated by being in his life. Making it better.

Flamebae wants nothing more than to make Roberts life better too. He can feel self reliance, the loneliness and the fear of burdening himself upon others. He just needs to find the right moment to lay everything out to the stubborn man.

One night the Z team goes out for drinks and Robert gets absolutely plastered and Flamebae very kindly takes him back to his place instead of his small sad apartment.

Robert is taken to Flamebaes spare room and he just breaks down. Wondering why he’s being so kind to him, asking if this is a trick and he’s gonna wake up in a dumpster again and pleading with him not to leave him.

Flamebae understands in this exact moment that Robert desperately needs someone to treasure him, understand him, pull him back and make him feel protected and taken care for.

Who is he to deny such a task?

He snuggles up to Robert in the guest bed and Robert passes out almost instantly, feeling his breath even out in to a steady, peaceful rhythm.

Flamebae makes a promise to the unconscious man beside him, that he will be taking care of Robert from now on.

The tension of the two of them is thick enough to slice with a knife and warrant a meeting with HR. But Roberts been too much of a wuss to make the impending HR violation and the obviously mutual feelings official.

But unlike Robert he is not a little bitch and he will do something about it!

Is it probably a bit obsessive, possessive and unhealthy? Well, yes! But if everyone is too high and mighty to keep passing Robert by. Then the responsibility of cherishing Robert is his and his alone.
