“you’re not ugly.” theresa reassured her. “i just thought that i was alone. those things move on their own?”

“It is okay. My appearance has scared quite a few people before.” Mantis reached up and touched one of the antennae. “They do. I think they have something to do with my abilities.”

“the guardian’s weren’t formed to clean up earth’s messes, but here we are.”

Mantis frowned. “You are a Guardian?”

“Yup. I guess we’re kind of Earth’s response to extraterrestrial threats.” It was a little more complicated than that, but Daisy didn’t think it would matter to Mantis. Honestly, Daisy was just happy that she was still on their roster. After her massive fuck up with Pleasant Hill, she was fully expecting to be kicked off. 

She smiled at how happy Mantis looked before nodding slightly. “Of course. I’ll try to get it to you soon but worst case I’ll hand it off to another Guardian to give to you if I can’t find you.”

Mantis nodded. “There are lots of teams, I’ve noticed.” She said softly. There were a lot more than she had anticipated -at first she thought it had just been The Avengers, but she had been very wrong. 

Mantis grinned. “Thank you very much,” her excitement was visible on her face. She had taken a liking to human things in her time on Terra -- they absolutely fascinated her. “Is there anything I can do for you in return?”

“A total mama’s boy. Which is sweet, until it’s time to go out on assignment. When babies are born, they primarily eat and sleep. Unfortunately, they don’t sleep well. If you haven’t had to spend a night with an infant, I envy you.”

Mantis listened carefully, intrigued by the information she was learning about human infants. “I have never even met a human infant,” she said. “I was a larva, then a nymph, before I grew into my adult state. Our species are very different.”

Thank you. Mantis signed back, nodding her head. I am not, but I do not know where I am truly from. She paused, thinking of how to sign her next words. Where are you from?

“wait, you can?” bobbi paused. normally her answer would have been hell no, but with all of the pleasant hill bullshit it was tempting. “y’know what? okay. hit me.”

Mantis closed her eyes and took Bobbi’s hand. The antennae lit up and Mantis felt a wave of emotion come over her. She felt Bobbi’s stress tighten her body, an ache forming between her shoulder blades and her neck -- Mantis took a deep breath and refocused her thoughts. 

“Relax,” Mantis’ voice was just above a whisper. “Calm.”

“I suppose not. I am sorry -- I was kept like a pet before. It wasn’t nice.”

“I’ll warn you, I don’t think you want to sense my feelings right now. Unless you want to help me not feel stressed out.” She was joking. Mostly.

"I could do that," Mantis said with a small nod, and held out her hand. “If that is what you would like?”

“Technically everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency. My powers let me manipulate that frequency.” God, she sounded like Simmons just now. “I can show you, if you want?”

 “I would very much like to see that,”  Mantis nodded. “How did you find out you could do it?”

As odd as she appeared, the alien woman seemed genuinely kind, or at least that’s the vibe Joaquin was getting. “Yeah, I promise. It’s all good,” he smiled, patting one of the wings gently, “-they’re a bit fragile now actually, they need some pretty hefty repairs.”

“I am glad it’s okay,” Mantis returned the smile, although it was one of her awkward smiles. "How do you repair these?”

“you see, history is much more fascinating than you’d expect it to be.”

“I can’t say I know much about the history of Terra. I have only visited a few times.”

“I am sorry if my appearance frightened you. I have been told that I am ugly before -- I know the antennae are unusual features.”

“Hello, Bucky. I am Mantis...  I have antennae that help me to sense what a person is feeling.”

Mantis watched Makkari sign -- it had been some time since she had used sign language herself. Though her time with Ego had been lonely, it had given her a lot of to learn the different languages of the Galaxy.

I am Mantis she signed back, hoping she had gotten the movement right.

“oh, no actually - i just swapped bodies with someone. someone really unfortunate. but I’m me again, so it’s all good.”

"I don't think I’ve ever swapped bodies with someone before. That sounds rather unpleasant.” Mantis thought for a moment. “How did that even happen?”

“Yeah…” Roger raised an eyebrow, eying the woman with confusion, “…did you - have anything else to add?”

“No.” Mantis said, staring at her thumbs. “But you did get me thinking about how useful they are and how we need them to do most things.”
