(ramble ramble)

Thanks @celestialspurs for letting me ramble! Playing with digital art is fun.

Rough sketch based on B&W still from show. Not precise because it'll get painted over later.

Picked colors from a different color reference photo, skin tones and hair on left, suit colors on right (roughly arranged from light to dark); blocked in just base colors on a layer under the rough sketch. Used mainly a simple opaque brush but also played around with trying to incorporate some kind of texture with textured airbrushes.

Merged sketch and base color layers. Painted over and used picked colors to kind of match the tones in original B&W still reference, trying to focus on getting the contrast right (make dark shadows really dark, highlights really light, but keeping midtones close to each other if necessary instead of pushing them too dark or light). Couldn't figure out how to play nicely with the oil paint, etc., brushes, so used pencil texture brushes and pretended I was coloring a sketch with colored pencils - lots of hatching instead of blending.

4. Cleaned edges (not very well, whoops) and tried different background colors. Ended up using black for main drawing and white for bonus drawing (just overpainted to change the hair and redo the collar, not shown here)

5. Subtle color adjustments using new layers with layer modes that may or may not be worth one's time: (1) Layer (overlay mode) to vary color in face and deepen suit jacket color. (Color variation in face: red mid-face, blue around the stubble area, yellow around forehead.) (2) Correction layer to adjust tone curve (just playing around). (3) Layer (add mode) to add a lighter but warm gradient over the entire figure. These adjustments didn't make it into the original drawing on the black background, but were used in the bonus drawing on the white background.
