Here's "Sabre Dance" by a Dutch prog/jazz band I just learned existed: Ekseption. Their shtick was writing songs influenced by classical music or just outright arranging classical music, so as you might guess, this is a cover of Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance." It's kinda funny.

on april 19, 2023, the world lost a great man. that man was my childhood friend, Cooper Andrews. 

Cooper was especially important to my journey as an artist, and we often inspired each other by sharing music over facebook when we were in high school. His time on earth was too short, and I wish I could have spent more time in thoughtful discussions with him. 

His mother set up a memorial fund for him for the causes he worked on so that his work could continue until after his death. It is my wish that anyone who sees this link would consider donating to the memorial fund.

The process of interpreting Mislead Cowboy started before my research and lessons in the Six Viewpoints began. From feburary to april 2021 I participated in a workshop by Deborah Black on Mary Overlie’s Six Viewpoints. During this period I resumed work on Iris de Boer’s Mislead Cowboy, Timeless, and SeaTree. Iris sent me these beautiful custom scores in May 2020. The recordings I listened to for research on Mislead Cowboy included graphic scores by Cornelius Cardew and Frederic Rzewski. I also listened heavily to Philip Glass, Grouper, and Mary Lattimore at the time.

The angular structure of the score struck me as an opportunity. I studied the angles of the blue teardrop shapes in Iris’ score. Eventually I worked out that an angle could be expressed as a vector with one component being the size of the angle (distance in time to the next note) and the other component being the saturation of the shape’s color (dynamics of the note pattern). I used the composer’s initials (IR) for a musical cipher which formed a dyad at times.

All funds donated to https://www.gofundme.com/f/5pmseries one hour either side of the performance will go to COVID Bailout NYC https://www.covidbailout.org/ an organization which raises funds to post bail for medically vulnerable individuals in New York City jails. This cause is important to me, as we are seeing the increase of COVID cases nationwide, as well as observing and participating in the revolution for Black lives. The carceral system =IS= slavery.
