No process GIF because it was all one layer except for the beard, and I didn’t think I was going to end up with anything nice actually so I didn’t take screenshots from the beginning.

Done in GIMP. I tried to sketch the anatomy first but I wasn’t getting anywhere so I restarted by drawing flat skin-colored patches with the basic round brush to approximate the silhouette. Mentally reduced the tones to 3 and blocked out the forms. Modeled with round brush, basic digital brush, and airbrush, and modified color with airbrush on soft light mode, frequently switching between thinking about color and form. Deciding on colors myself and not sticking to reference color was a big challenge but I liked making the fingers and ear really red. I was constantly cleaning up the edges of the figure with the eraser. Used warp to correct form mainly as a final refinement step - it was very useful. Realized as I was uploading that I accidentally made his arms too short, so had to play around a bit with elongating things in a hurry.
