Dentistry
I remember my childhood and the games I used to play with my playmates, and then I make a connection between the past and the future because I always used to be the doctor who treated the patients in the game. My curiosity in medicine started out in an early age and kept building up over time. However, some of my views and preferences have changed over time. I started considering other majors and careers such as, psychology, but until now, the medical field is my number one option, and dentistry is what I want to major in. I have always been interested in the process of examining patients, making diagnosis and coming up with a treatment plan. I also enjoy watching dentists working with their hands and being creative. Dentistry programs prepare students to learn features of dental treatment. They learn how to take care of teeth, tongue, gums, lips, and jaw by diagnosing and treating oral problems related to these parts. Dental school attendants also study the composition and structure of the oral cavity which includes teeth and jaws. Reading x-rays, filling cavities, and straightening teeth are also included in dentistry programs; however, dentistry is not only helping people feel better about their smile. Dentists are often the first healthcare professionals who recognize and identify diseases such as blood pressure and cancer. In order to be a dentist, dental students need at least a bachelor’s degree before entering dental schools and all dental schools necessitate applicants to complete required science classes. Majoring in a science class, most importantly biology increases the chance of acceptance, but there are no definite majors required to enter most dental schools. College undergraduates who plan to apply for a dental school have to take the Dental Acceptance Test (DAT) and students usually take the test during their junior year. Dental schools accept students based on DAT tests, grades, and recommendation letters. Students need to study four years of dental school in addition to the four years of undergrad to be considered as a general dentist. There are about fifty qualified dental schools in the United States. The first two years in dental program students will be devoted to classroom study and laboratory experiments. Dental Schools also require students to take courses such as local anesthesia, periodontology, radiology, and anatomy. Students are also required to work with patients in a clinical environment by the supervision of a licensed dentist. In order to become licensed, students must pass both written and clinical portions of the National Board Dental Examination after earning a dental degree from an accepted school. A dentists who is willing to practice as a specialist must have a license in that specific specialty which requires two to four years of further education after dental school. Furthermore, Dentists should have excellent communication, leadership and organizational skills; they should also be strong problem- solvers and comfortable performing physical tasks. Dentists spend many hours working with patients who are in need of special attention especially children; as a result, dentists require a lot of patience. Dentistry is a very critical career; a small mistake a dentist makes can ruin that dentist’s whole career. Negligence is not a choice in dentistry because patients do not accept any mistakes. Media always reports incidents about patients suing their dentists. However, what sort of actions lead patients to sue their own dentists?
