ANNI —> LILIANNA GARISTER: becka could happily admit that lilianna was handsome and charming and bright, leagues above the good lot of her handmaids would ever be, but something always seemed spoiled when her thoughts wandered to her, and she felt both fly and spider in a web of her own making.
#when you leave your entire reality with the smallfolk behind with the help of a much older manipulative woman in search of a better life only to discover that it in fact does NOT get better
CESYIL TILLPORT: out of the corner of his eye, dunk caught a glimpse of cesyil. though they had scarcely spoken, he had found himself watching for her in the viewing gallery. the foreign cast of her comely features made her easy to find amongst the fair-haired daughters of the reach, and she was seldom seen without a smile, save for aerion's cruel sport. now her expression was panic-stricken, her gaze fixed upon the gates of the lists where river mist rolled out. he could not hear her words from where he stood, but the speed with which she spoke and the tight grip she had on lord tyrell's eldest daughter made him feel sick all the same.
Can we "go fishing" in Riverlands and KL? ;) My OC is traveling from North back to KL and decides to buy some fresh fishes for supper.
What can Riverlands offer? Is it only the fish or maybe some other regional dishes? ;) And what are the main differences between Riverlands and KL - over the sea? - when it comes to fish markets and catch bought straight from the bogata and ships? 🐟🦀🐙
i was so excited to get your request right after i had started working on a riverlands diet for a young catelyn tully! i love everything fish, and out of all the regions in westeros, besides the reach, i would love to spend a few more chapters in the riverlands.
as the name suggests, a major part of a riverlands diet would be river-based, but the area would still offer an array of choices for anyone settled or simply passing through! grain would be plentiful and a standard part of every meal, with wheat as the main ingredient in many popular dishes, and corn as a common accompanying vegetable.
between king's landing and the riverlands, there would not be that much of a difference in fish supply when it comes to the upper classes; they would have just as much access to fresh fish in one region as they would the next. as for the smallfolk, while it would be much easier for those in the riverlands to obtain fresher fish, those would still be bigger-ticket items and reserved more for special occasions or intimate family gatherings. there is one caveat to this, and that would be the produce that grows near freshwater sources, such as leeks, asparagus, celery, spinach, and watercress.
for street food: mackerel on the stick, spiced corn fritters, and liver and onion pie.
for tavern food: celery and leek soup, drunken pears, corn on the cob, mutton stew.
What Would Catelyn Tully Eat in a Day Growing up in Riverrun?
for breakfast: hot bread with soft cheese, crisp bacon, smoked herring, soft-boiled eggs, and roasted nuts.
for dinner: tart grapes, honeyed capons stuffed with grain and chestnuts, cream of leek soup, fresh bread, and a thin slice of honey cake.
for supper: trout wrapped in bacon, a salad of turnips and red fennel and watercress, hot bread, and nut-brown ale.
i recently reread the part in a game of thrones where catelyn remembered her and lysa feeding littlefinger so many mud pies that he was sick for a week, and the idea of the two sisters bossing him around as kids stuck with me, so i felt the idea of them ordering him to fetch them a snack in the middle of the night was very fitting.
for a midnight snack: warmed milk and candied salmon.
it's only been a week since the testaments' season finale and i'm already experiencing withdrawal symptoms

What Would the Smallfolk Eat in a Day in King's Landing?
for @goodqueenkaro! thank you for this request 😊 it was so much fun to do and your oc sounds really interesting, i'd love to hear more about him!
i think there is a very common misconception about the lower classes during medieval times, especially regarding their diet. i promise it was all not grub or bowl of brown, although perpetual stew is one of the oldest dishes we can trace back. in fact, some of the most beloved and expensive dishes of our time originated from the lower class, as they had to find creative ways to either avoid or incorporate certain ingredients. paella, polenta, ratatouille, and oysters are all great examples!
now back to the real matter at hand, the smallfolk of king's kanding. it's hard to pinpoint direct references to peasant food from the ASOIAF books beyond a bowl of brown, and the only smallfolk character to receive a POV is ser duncan; whose diet is less comprised of flea bottom dishes and more ones fitting that of a hedge knight. despite this, we can draw from historical and geographical evidence to figure out what the smallfolk might have eaten. for daily life, there would not be set-in-stone differences between the meals of the day, but rather an emphasis on eating whenever or whatever one can at that time. street and tavern food would be the most popular amongst the masses, as well as pieces that can be stretched out over a long period of time, i.e., a lot of stew and ale.
for morning meals: wheat-based porridge, horsebread, pine jam, and ale.
for evening meals: dried fish, bowl of brown stew, beans with garlic and onions, stewed eel, and ale.
for street food: hard oatcakes, dried salt beef, horsebread, and small raised pork pies (fun fact: pork pies are considered one of the earliest forms of fast food!).
following the provisions brought by the tyrells, there would be greater access to perishable items, such as cream, eggs, and fresh meat. as for special occasions, that access may be more of an indulgence, and the simple joys for the smallfolk might come from eating for enjoyment rather than nutritional value. because highgarden is known to be a popular trading spot, i like to imagine that, alongside proper supplies, the tyrells might have brought some spices as well!
for special occasion meals: fiddlehead and mushroom soup, raised pigeon or pork and egg pie, spiced vegetable pottage, and mushroom and dried pork egg quiche.
for special occasion street food: jam-filled oatcakes, spiced wafers, and honeyed cryppys.
Hi! Would you do the posts about meals for other GoT/ASOIAF regions? I'm already a bit obsessed with "The Inn at the Crossroads" blog and books, and I crave for more... :)
absolutely!! do you have a specific region or character in mind? i'll make them next :)
What Would Daenerys Targaryen Eat in a Day as Queen of Meereen?
for breakfast: soft goat cheese, olives, and raisins.
for dinner: figs, flatbread, aged cheeses, olives, and watered down wine.
for supper: honey bread, carrots, raisins, lamb, and wine.
for a late-night sweet treat: stuffed dates and figs.
