Dragons are metabolically ectothermic but consume minerals and reagents from the environment around them specifically to generate small scale combustion reactions in their gizzard-like, muscular pre-stomach sacks. Controlling oxygen supply to this reaction allows them to control their body temperature at will, giving them endotherm-like capabilities.

Evacuating the contents of one's stomach is a conserved response to fight-or-flight situations, and basal dragon species are thought to have developed a primitive form of fire breathing as this reaction extended to their stomach sacks. Over time, large, apex predator dragon species have developed abdominal muscles capable of evacuating this material as a fine mist that rapidly combusts at the high temperature it's kept at when it meets the oxygen of the open air.

Dragons are often known to fully hibernate or slumber for extended periods of time. During these instances, their flames are fully quenched. Upon waking, dragons seek fire to reignite their flames. Humans seeking to worship or conserve dragons are known to keep torches or sconces lit in dragon dens for this purpose.
