i had a bit of a brain blast recently about murch, spyke, and the other urchins in splatoon being specifically from the series equivalent of hokkaido

do you think it makes sense?

to make this post more interesting with some niche lore, the team represented on the B-ball Jersey gear item has a name: the Okhotsk Uniers.* This was only shown in the Tower Records exhibit.

*Uniers is just how I assume ウニアーズ would be romanized Now uni means sea urchin, and Okhotsk is in reference to the sea of okhostk, a sea enclosed by Russia and the northern coast of Hokkaido.

There's another basketball team called the Tasman Lob-stars, in reference to the Tasman sea.

...This implies there are either regions or major cities in the Splatoon world named after seas!

Point is though, an urchin-themed basketball team from somewhere around the sea of okhotsk...our major sea urchin characters are from a region up north that likely isnt too far from inkopolis...hokkaido is on the sea of okhostk...it checks out.

sanitization/kamabo co headcanons

the removal of memories and identity does not equal a subject losing wants or desires

a process similar to dialysis is carried out on sanitized octarians on a somewhat frequent basis in order to filter out these wants and desires and replace them with dummy data

long enough without one of these sessions will result in a sanitized octarian being able to control themselves again. the rate at which they regain control increases depending on their level of hype and exposure to outside stimuli

due to this the deepsea metro limits any and all contact with “contraband” from the surface.

dedf1sh’s music played on repeat in every station and throughout kamabo co’s walls is used as a sort of military marching tune as well as to keep the sanitized octarians unaware of other forms of music

sanitization is done in two parts. one where the memories and identity are taken and turned into memcakes: this is done to test subjects.

the second part is when the natural ink of the patient is completely filtered out and replaced with sanitized ink. this is when all wants and desires are filtered out and replaced with dummy data, making control of the patients easy.

sanitized ink is capable of keeping an inkfish alive on its own and when an octarians ink is fully replaced with it, most of their bodily functions cease to happen or change dramatically. it starts with their heart either beating far slower or not at all. their lungs also do not need to breathe as often.

their thin skin loses any natural pigmentation and shows through to the sanitized ink underneath. you can see their internal organs and veins if you were to shine a flashlight through them

sanitized octarians are not fed on a consistent basis, but they can eat and digest. they take in nutrients via the sanitized ink used in their dialysis. during a sanitized octarians recovery they have to eat very little and allow their stomach to expand back to its normal size.

of course with less food comes less body fat. the amount of mass lost in sanitization varies depending on individual, but many sanitized octarians lose an excess of weight and appear dehydrated

if a sanitized octarian recovers, their bodily functions will continue. their heart will beat more frequently, their lungs will breathe more, and their digestive functions will become normal. however, their natural ink color may only return in small amounts. their complexion will remain unnaturally green and they will keep strange traits from their sanitization

this all varies from person to person. some individuals may recover their bodily functions nearly to how it was pre-sanitization. others can remain nearly the same and not recover certain things

while recovering they will redevelop a sense of personhood, but wont regain any memories without the return of their mem cakes

i dont think agent 8 would be a stable person realistically

most interpretations i see of agent 8 have them as a naive, confused octarian learning about the world and its all bright and with a cool breeze

and those interpretations are fins. im all for a poor guy getting to be happy

but i wanna see more interpretations of agent 8 where they are irreparably fucked up

from agent 8’s perspective, their first moments are waking up in a dingy subway and immediately being told to kill. they get handed an armys worth of weaponry and are told to slaughter the closest thing to their own species they can see around

they read magazines about a race of surface dwelling funky fresh inklings who engage in extreme acts of violence for fun

all three people theyre friendly with throughout their journey?

i dont think those people are gonna turn 8 into the stablest of people

and the closest semblance of a memory they have from before their “birth” comes in vague poems including various war propaganda

in my interpretation of agent 8, they are an autistic albeit very effective killer when they need to be. fighting comes to them like muscle memory. they are more accustomed to war than they are to social interaction. they feel as if the only thing that truly understands them on a level beyond superficial are the weapons they wield. their respect for these weapons runs so deep they get a job at ammo knights maintaining them. afterall it was those guns that saved their life. when presented with an opportunity to go out and have fun in the sun, even though it was all they dreamt of in the metro, they have a tendency to sink back into the darkness where their guns are. its the safest place they know. the only time they feel truly safe is with a gun in hand.

assorted inkfish physiology headcanons

their internal organs, veins & arteries are constructed from the same thin skin material as their actual skin is

their ‘blood’ is a mixture of ink and oxygen carriers like iron or copper and is usually colored like their ink

inkfish going through stressful or developmental periods can have parts of their eyemasks flake off or splinter. this also happens if they dont hydrate so lotion is sometimes applied to the mask to keep it Pristine

the condition where an inkfish’s skin is an odd color like keaton’s is a remnant of their childhood where their thin skin didnt develop to contain melanin and thus shows through to their ink color

other conditions like beika’s are maybe due to some desaturating thickness of the skin. maybe he is just mad ashy and dehydrated and that leads to it. use some fucking lotion take a shower beika i hate you

most octolings develop from eggs. some octarians that are born from severed tentacles can develop into humanoid bodies but the octolings that come from that have some physical differences. these include their head tentacles sort of fading into their skin rather than having a hairline, or the development into a full blown octoling stopping awkwardly after a certain point.

uncomfortable growths of mask material can form on random parts of an inkfish’s body. the shoulders, chest, and back are common places but it can occur basically anywhere.

during development or through strenuous activity, inkfish can physically stretch their thin skin a bit too much. this leads to marks on their body where the skin seems to “split” or be stretched thin enough for ink colored scars to be visible. for most inklings, these splits appear more as cuts or divots into the skin. as for octolings they resemble keloid scars. both species have exceptions resembling the opposite. physically these marks are like stretch marks, but visibly resemble body hair.

inkling and octoling ink have different consistencies. it varies depending on individual but octarians tend to have thicker ink than that of inklings. this applies to ink that comes from the body and the ink used in inksports is filtered through the weapons to be the same consistency in order to prevent any unfair advantages caused by the differences in ink thickness.

inklings specifically when in human form develop a semi-solid column of ink in their back to help them stay upright. while more flexible than any human would be, this makes them less flexible than octarians. octarian ink being thicker keeps octolings upright thanks to PURE MUSCLE.

specials being limited in turf war is mandated for health and safety reasons. when an inkfish is hyped up, the volume of ink in their body increases and thus their internal pressure. the temperature of their ink also rises and leads to the ink within their body to boil. in order to prevent symptoms of heat stroke, it is advised not to abuse or spam one’s special NOR to remove the limiter from one’s ink tank. another reason special spamming is frowned upon is because prolonged pressure increases can cause an inkfish’s internal organs and arteries to rupture which is obviously not fucking good.

if an inkfish really REALLY wants to experience water (why would you want to??) they could undergo a process to thicken their skin. the training is long and strenuous and doing it would forfeit one’s ability to shapeshift. this would also forfeit the ability to respawn since both abilities are tied to thin skin. the process is only truly valuable for those who have already gotten very old and dont really need to shapeshift or respawn anymore. sundrying is one of these processes and is most commonly practiced by elder inklings in order to prolong their life when the only real threat to them would be water.

last week i had a fucking brain blast regarding how its mentioned murch and spyke are both from a region north of inkadia and the splatlands

probably an area with a high urchin population

and i thought to myself it cant really get anymore north of tokyo than hokkaido, right? and apparently hokkaido is known for its urchins, or uni, which are a delicacy

uni from hokkaido are described as buttery and filled with umami which isnt related to murch or spyke but i just wanted to mention it

so i think spyke and murch, as well as other urchins like oonie from ink theory/yoko and the gold bazookas are probably from the splatoon equivalent of hokkaido

this is probably not as revolutionary a thought as i think it is

EDIT: im now even more inclined to believe this because i looked into the etymology of the names of some of the background urchins

kitamura and murasaki are both named after kita murasaki uni, or northern purple sea urchin, kita means north and when you google kita murasaki uni, the top god damn result is the hokkaido uni shop

oonie is also obviously named uni

this rlly feels like a Duh moment. it might be obvious and it might not be i just feel like i dont need to get that deep into it. it just sounds right

(this is a poopoo copy and paste of a discord rant so forgive things not being perfect and succinct)

i wonder how the splatlands and inkadia were so isolated from one another

obviously back then there was no bridge to cross between inkadia and the one weird peninsula to get to the splatlands but if the splatlands and inkadia are prefectures and not anything larger then thats not too terrible a distance to travel right??

my theory right now is like the great turf war widened the divide between them not literally but ideologically

when the flood that uprooted the eiffel tower (how the fuck did that happen btw) happened it spurred on the great turf war (it wasnt just this flood it was other stuff too) but in the splatlands the three clans were able to fix the problem meaning they didnt have to fight over land in the war but inkadia and the octarians still did this meant that octarians could continue to live in the splatlands but not in inkadia perhaps the inkadians didnt like the splatlands due to the octarian population and thus theyre so isolated

thus somehow throughout all of the splatoon series no splatlandian brought up to an inkadian that off the hooks dj is clearly a fucking octopus and how the fuck does pearl not know what an octoling is i can accept the inkadians not recognizing octolings but they sure as hell know they exist its just been so long since theyve seen one that they dont know what to look for and the eye mask thing isnt that much an indicator because inklings like the lady from squid squad with a separated eye mask exist

but pearl nintendo is so focused on making sure she had no idea what an octoling was (in the og japanese version) how the fuck did she not know that

how the hell did no fucking inkadian meet a splatlandian online that happened to be an octarian and notice when they started popping up in inkadia

now that i look at the map though the only way to really walk from inkadia to the splatlands would require crossing octarian borders so thats a no and the easiest way to get from a to b was the hammerhead bridge which want constructed until 2015 and took 7 years to finish but there are still planes and boats how the fuck has nobody in inkadia noticed a splatlandian octoling tourist

do octolings just not visit inkadia because the people there are scarily racist???

obviously splatlandians and inkadians dont rlly have a reason to visit bc they dont like each other (implied by deep cut beef) and if i remember right its stated nobody really gave a shit about the splatlands until recently but there had to be a few curious fellas

if the splatlands and inkadia are prefectures then thats such a short distance to be so isolated from one another especially in an age with the internet and air travel anyone in inkadia could google octoling

but of course we could just?? say the splatlandians did engage in the turf war and also sent their octarians to domes and shivers family happened to be an exception because they helped with the flood?? but then why would they need to fight if the flood was dealt with??

the mentions of distance between the prefectures might be innaccurate im not an expert on japanese geography. i used some community made stuff layering the splatoon map over tokyo bay for reference and based my assumption of the splatlands and inkadia being prefectures on 4’s home being in a place called chi ba which is a real world prefecture. but its probably a longer range than i think it is and bigger than what im acting like in the rant

out of context it sounds like i made a lot of this shit the fuck up and its 9 in the morning its far too early to find every post i got my conclusions from so the source rn is regrettably trust me

in hindsight (i rambled about this one hour ago) traveling distances like that throughout history is no easy feat especially with a whole bay in the way lengthening the total travel time but they have fucking planes now

another addendum i completely forgot to mention the fact that haikara and bankara are in direct opposition to each other and that obviously explains it im foolish
