Oasis: which one is fake? (11 + 1)

For those who don't already know: Oasis is a band centered around a pair of brothers, Noel and Liam Gallagher. They've behaved in rather unorthodox ways toward each other over the years.

Here are some of the "greatest hits" of the Gallagher brothers' relationship... except there's a catch: ONE of these things didn't actually happen! Eleven of them are true, and one of them I just made up. Can you guess which story is invented?

So... WHICH ONE IS FAKE???

1: One time Noel wanted to hang out in private with Liam, so he hired a couple of thugs to kidnap Liam from the airport, stuff him in the back of a sketchy van, and whisk him away to a country mansion where Noel was lurking in wait. Liam thought he was about to be murdered.

2: Liam wrote a song about him and Noel that started with the lines "I could be your lover / You could be all mine".

3: At the start of one of their concerts, Liam and Noel came out onstage and then kissed each other – with lots of tongue – in front of an audience of 40,000 people.

4: In an interview, Noel announced that he and Liam were "head-over-heels in love" with each other, and then added: "It's illegal in some countries, but while you're on the road it's all right."

5: In an interview, Noel said about Liam: "He's deeply in love with me. And he's very, very upset about the fact that he's deeply in love with me." When Liam was asked about this, he replied: "I love my brother yes is that a crime".

6: Onstage at a concert, Liam declared into his microphone that he and Noel love each other, and then added: "We had sex last night."

7: Unprompted in an interview, Liam mused about getting Noel pregnant. With twins. To prove how much he loves him.

8: Liam tweeted all sorts of dramatic romantic things about Noel, such as "I miss him terribly I need his love", "I'm crying I'm sad this has all brought it home how much I miss and need him for love", and also claimed to have sent Noel flowers and chocolates and was considering throwing a brick through his window to get his attention.

9: Innumerable times over the years, they have both referred to their relationship as a marriage and to Liam as being Noel's (ex) wife.

10: Noel said in an interview about Liam: "Sometimes I'd like to escape the world and run away to sea with him."

11: Noel has described Liam at various times as "sexy", "attractive", "really good-looking", and "stunningly beautiful".

12: Noel said about him and Liam: "No word's been invented for the feelings we have for each other. It goes beyond love."

It's time for the truth to be revealed. And I have something to confess. As many of you noticed...

...this poll was a bit of a trick. How so? Read on, to 1) find out which one is the correct answer, 2) see the receipts for all the crazy shit they actually did do, and 3) get the explanation of the trick.

"He's deeply in love with me." Status: TRUE. At the 4:37 mark in this video you can hear Noel saying the "He's deeply in love with me" bit. And at the end of this post, you can see Liam's tweet when questioned about this comment.

Liam talking about impregnating Noel. Status: TRUE. He said this in an interview that you can read here. The comment in question can be found on the last page, in the upper right corner.

Liam's dramatic romantic tweets. Status: TRUE. You can see the tweets in question, plus many more, here.

Calling themselves a married couple. Status: TRUE. See my entire "wag" tag (yes, "WAG" as in "Wives And Girlfriends"... that's obviously a bit tongue-in-cheek on my part) for the evidence.

Noel wants to run away to sea with Liam. Status: Okay, listen. As 42.3% of you guessed correctly, this is the one that I made up. Noel did not ever actually say this sentence in an interview. However: As many folks pointed out in tags and comments, this lie is based in truth. Noel does have a recurring motif in his lyrics of wanting to run away to sea and escape life on land, where he doesn't feel entirely at home... and often the lyrics in question imply that he'd like to take Liam along with him (matelotage?). This motif appears repeatedly both in his solo work and in some songs he wrote for Oasis as well.

Noel calls Liam "stunningly beautiful" etc. Status: TRUE. See the comments in question and more here.

Sometimes I end up watching videos about indie author drama (I don't know why) and a quarter of them are "indie author reads mean review of their book and publicly and embarrassingly crashes out, sometimes with a side order of stalking or harrassment" and I'm always like. Why are you even reading the reviews. Like what did you expect to accomplish here. If you're looking for tips on how to improve your work, that step comes BEFORE publication. Your role in this is over, those aren't for you. What can you possibly expect to gain by reading them, and if you do, WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU RESPOND.

Nothing that ever happens in indie author drama is ever remotely relatable to me. I always go in like "oh, these are my peers, we have the same career, I will understand this" and it's always somebody making absolutely off the wall decisions that make no fucking sense to me. My reaction to everything that happens is "why would someone do that".

"This person read their goodreads reviews, got upset about it, and faked a letter from their publisher to the reviewers chastising them for making a new author quit writing with their mean words, then wrote about it publicly on social media to try to garner support and direct hate to the reviewers" I would rather eat glass than do any single one of those things, each individual step is another stupid idea.

"This person made thirty sock puppet accounts to fake bigotry and hate against them in order to garner sympathy book purchases" there is simply no way that the sales return is worth the effort even if you don't get caught, why would you want to do this. Emptying my actual legit Tumblr askbox makes me tired. Why would anyone invent a second mean askbox.

"This writer is suing this other writer for writing a book that's too similar in a bid to establish ownership over common genre tropes" how do you have the money to be dabbling in this bullshit, let alone the time? Lawyers are expensive and you look like an idiot. People write similar books all the time, it's called writing within a genre.

"This person committed fraud and gamed the review algorithms and ended up taking thousands and thousands of dollars from potential readers before delivering AI gibberish and skipping out with the money" okay that's a supremely arsehole move but it does appear to be very lucrative, so I can logically see why selfish people keep doing this one.

#I have seen some situations where I can understand not being able to avoid the bad reviews#bc when you need to maintain a social media presence for marketing#and ppl are coming into your comments to tell you how much they hate your work#that’s hard#but yeah if you can avoid it why would you look

These aren't people who are being harassed by dickbags sending them reviews, they're looking up the reviews on storefronts (meant for other prospective readers), getting upset and starting shit with the reviewers, often extremely publicly, sometimes with fake screenshots, doxxing the reviewers, multiple sock puppet accounts and/or (if they're feeling particularly spicy) false cease and desist letters demanding the reviews get taken down, from lawyers who either don't exist or aren't involved. Hate in your inbox is on the reader and it's not unusual for indie authors to receive targeted harassment from groups of people doing that, but that's a very different thing than looking up your own reviews, getting mad at the 1 to 3 star ones, and throwing a public temper tantrum where you show the world that you are a lying bully. There are just so many places in that chain of events where an author can go "perhaps continuing with this is a bad idea."
