'Magic' is demonstrably effective because systems of manipulating consciousness are always effective to a certain extent. Advertising and propaganda are two other examples that are completely non-supernatural but which have strong, measurable effects on human behavior while being completely intangible. You show someone a certain arrangement of symbols, and those symbols work on them.

What is it that I revere so much in those indelible moments? When I conjure them on my mind’s projection screen, they instantly evoke a lake of emotion -- a searing, yearning nostalgia. It’s as if these particular tableaus are, in me, a synecdoche of longing for obscure states of being. They are visual poetry, the arbitrary word-sound that stands in for the object. And, like its semantic counterpart, the visual vocabulary is limited only by memory.

The banality of these moments belies the wealth of significance they carry for me. Looking over the coniferous treetops at the end of the driveway at my family home. The interplay of raindrops on the car window, backgrounded by grey, as we drove down the highway. Streetlamps like fireflies in marching order, lining the night. There’s a pang harnessed to each one of these, cosmic and ineffable. To look at it too closely is to dissipate it. The emotion is limned into every subtlety of these inscribed memories, fractal significance in every brushstroke. Yet the pining is not for that particular place and time. It is for something far broader -- a life with the color cast of a different cinematography. A life with narrative resonance imbuing every saccade of the eye and dressing of the scenery. As atmospheric as they are, the scenes are merely entry points, I feel, whereby life comes more to resemble art. They are the holy icons of my religion of one.

It’s a quagmire if you go that far and try to take over Iraq. The other thing was casualties. Everyone was impressed with the fact we were able to do our job with as few casualties as we had. But for the 146 Americans killed in action, and for their families — it wasn’t a cheap war. And the question for the president, in terms of whether or not we went on to Baghdad, took additional casualties in an effort to get Saddam Hussein, was how many additional dead Americans is Saddam worth? Our judgment was, not very many, and I think we got it right.

Once you got to Iraq and took it over, took down Saddam Hussein’s government, then what are you going to put in its place? That’s a very volatile part of the world, and if you take down the central government of Iraq, you could very easily end up seeing pieces of Iraq fly off.
