do you think you'll be a good father?
‘i hope so. i mean, if i can be even half the father that my dad or joe was... i think i’ll be alright. ’

Lois only knew of Barry through her friendship with Iris, and that was more than enough for her to know that he’d lend her a hand but with her latest article, but first she had to introduce herself. Through her work with Planet over the years she’d made quite the name for herself and for the most part is instantly recognisable through the name alone, but in this case she had to hope Iris had mentioned her before “Actually, I was hoping you would give me a hand with something” Lois slowly walks into the lab heading towards where Barry is sat “an off the books something.”
barry offered a smile as lois entered the lab. he recognized her, from being a friend of iris and from a few instances that he’s seen her as the flash, working with superman. yet, that was a bit harder to explain. ' lois, right? ’ he offers his hand in greeting, turning away from his work for a moment. ‘ for a friend of iris? i’ll do my best. what can i help you with? ’

“No, no paperwork,” Lena chuckled, shaking her head as she stepped into the room, glancing around in curiosity as she headed over towards him. “And I’m actually avoiding some of my own.” One of the biggest drawbacks of being a businesswoman was the seemingly never-ending pile on her desk. “Actually, I just wanted to come and see if you guys have had any luck trying to figure out what went on at the Charity Ball the other night.”
the chuckle that passes his lips is light, the nod of his head gesturing that he understood too well what it was like to avoid paperwork. he was good at his job, yet somehow despite all his speed the forms he had to fill never seemed to be done on time. his attention turns to lena – he didn’t know her particularly well, but had met a time or two from shared friends. ‘ we don’t have a lot yet. ’ he answered honestly, gesturing to a device on his table. ‘ we found the dispersion devices planted in the vents, set to go off at a certain time. no trace of any prints, but i’m analyzing the formula in the gas now. ’

Sleeping was the last thing she ever wanted to do, and if it weren’t for the fact her body needed the rest, she would stop doing it all together without a second thought. A long sigh escaped her and she shook her head. They had come to Earth 46 because they were needed there, and she didn’t think going back to their earth would do her any good now. This was their life now, whether they liked it or not, and they had to stick to it. It didn’t make her happy, playing house in a loft that wasn’t theirs, living the life their earth 46 versions had built for themselves. It was an odd feeling knowing they had died in that earth.
It had been a while since Iris had giving death a serious thought – perhaps the last time had been when they had been so sure she would die, but that was over and gone and she didn’t want to think about that anymore. At least not when she had so much to live for. “There is something I need to tell you.” There was no pretty surprise, nothing special, just them and that was all she needed. “A few days ago I went to see Diana and she told me… Well, she said that she could hear another heartbeat when I walked in. A second heartbeat.”
there was something about these moments that barry loved. as much as he loved every moment with iris, to know that even in the midst and aftermath of so much chaos of their lives, that they could still sit in their home – even if it wasn’t truly theirs – and talk. it was simple but he didn’t need anything else, no distractions. her admission that she needed to tell him something caught his attention, his hands gently taking hers as he caught on to the importance. his brows furrowed in mild confusion as she spoke, sitting up from his position on the couch. ‘ wait – a second heartbeat? was someone else in the room? did someone follow you? are you alright? – i mean, diana was there so i assume, but – you aren’t being stalked, are you? because i’ll find them. ’

It had been the longest night, followed closely by the longest morning, and all Iris wanted was a moment of quiet and peace with her husband. Every time she closed her eyes, images of that terrible nightmare returned to her, and she was having a hard time trying to catch her breath. It was terrifying – Losing Barry had always been her biggest fear, and now that she had experienced it, it was hard to go back to the way life was before. Once she had almost lost him to the lighting, so many months submerged in a coma and no hope of him ever coming back. Then he had left for months, only to return to them so out of it. They had gone through enough already, and she couldn’t help but think if there would ever be a day they get to spend without a single worry.
The doctor had told her that everything was fine and confirmed the pregnancy once again, not that she needed it. It was too soon for their technology to know she was carrying twins, but who needed that when you had an actual goddess listening to the heartbeats. Now it was about time Barry knew as well. She dropped the heels she had been carrying in hand and made it to the couch, resting her head on the back. She could sleep for days, only that she didn’t want to. “I wish dad were here.” Her dad would know what to do and the right thing to say to make it all better.
guilt found it’s way into his system, infecting him since the night before. if he had known about the fear toxin sooner, he would have gotten iris out of that room, keeping her far from it’s reach. he hadn’t detected it soon enough, his body processing it through too quickly to realize that it was the cause of the sudden chaos that erupted during the charity ball. he hates that she had to go through the exposure of it, and as they make their way inside he follows her to the couch. he knows better than to question her about what she’d seen under the influence of the gas, but trusts her to talk to him when she’s ready.
hanging his jacket on the arm of the couch, he sits next to her with a heavy sigh, head nodding. he knew what she meant – joe was comforting in times like these. ‘ yeah –– i could always take you back to visit? ’ he offers, arm wrapping around her shoulders to draw her closer. ‘ i’m sorry, iris... can i get you anything? unless you just wanted to talk, or try to get some sleep? ’

ONCE THE TWO OF THEM ran inside of a building that was going under what looks to be like renovations, he looks up at Barry nervously. “I did travel back in time, I owe you an explanation don’t I?” He smiles despite that he was going to talk about why he was here and not in his own time. “My birth name is Bartholomew Henry Allen II. Everyone calls me Bart, but my father named me after you! Which is an amazing honor, you’re so cool.” He says with a smile although that doesn’t really answer any questions. “I was born with my powers, but my metabolism worked too well. I aged rapidly, skipping over my childhood years. I was twelve when I should have been two. I grew up hooked up to a virtual reality machine ever since I was born though. My mother is a Thawne, the only nice one! The rest of them are the worst! Her father was the president? He’s not nice, and he kidnapped me when I was born because he wanted to use my abilities for his personal agenda.. He’s nasty, just like that Eobard guy that I’m also related to apparently? He’s a speedster, I don’t know if you’ve heard of him! I fought him once, and I think he really likes to hear himself talk? I wish he wouldn’t, hearing him talk about how I’m an abomination gets old! Oh, I’m getting off topic, sorry it happens!” He doesn’t talk about his father and aunt dying, it wasn’t something he wanted to talk about. “My mother broke me out of the lab I was in and sent me back in time to get away! Upon coming back my metabolism ended up going back to normal, and I’ve been staying with the Garrick’s and the Teen Titans ever since!” Bart realizes just now how much he talked and feels embarrassed. “I talked a lot, yikes! You don’t have to believe me, and I don’t blame you if you don’t want anything to do with me if this is too weird, but it’s been an honor to meet you, at least once!”
following along the boy’s story turned out to be the easy part, with their minds working at similar speeds. yet, he has pause while attempting to comprehend what exactly every detail truly meant. he has countless questions and trouble narrowing down where to begin. ‘ no, no – i mean, you’re fine. you didn’t talk too much, i’ve done worse. wait – why would you think i’d want nothing to do with you? you’re family, you’re... it’s really weird to say grandson out loud at my age, you know? we should probably run a dna test, just so no one has any doubts. i believe you though. ’ he rambles on a bit himself. the situation is surreal and he hasn’t even begun on the questions he has. ‘ we need to back track though. you know how bad time travel can be though? trust me on that, messing with the time line, big no-no. you wouldn’t believe the things i’ve screwed up with that. how long have you been in the past? are you okay here, another time, another earth? ’
his attention is focused on his work, scribbling away various notes and formulas with a stack of papers on his desk. being a forensic scientist for the police department didn’t make for light work, and being the flash only seemed to accumulate more. his head doesn’t turn though he’s aware that someone has entered the lab. ‘ hey, come on in – so long as you aren’t bringing in paperwork. ’

“Oh, wanna bet?” She laughed as she placed a hand on his stomach, fingers fiddling with the end of his tie. “Does it matter? You have all my attention.” After living together for so many years, Iris wanted to believe she knew Barry better than she knew herself, and it was obvious that he wasn’t buying her excuses. Truth to be told, she didn’t want to give him the news like she was talking about the weather. It was supposed to be special – a moment they would never forget. “Not really. Diana found real food and we took a break from the gala to eat.” It didn’t feel right – she was keeping such a huge secret, that was just as Barry’s as it was hers, and he deserved to know. “You know, honey, why don’t we get some fresh air? There is something I would like to tell you.”
his smile brightens at her words. the fact that they’re married, that they share a home, it doesn’t matter because he’s still amazed that she loves him just as much he’s always loved her. it’s an honor, especially when she looks as beautiful and radiant as she does tonight. ( and every night. ) it didn’t change the fact that he knew there was something she wasn’t saying, but he wouldn’t push her before she was ready and risk spoiling the night. ‘ diana’s good for that. never have to worry about going hungry with her around. ’ he comments, a smile touching his lips. it helped to know that iris got on so well with the rest of the league. he takes her hand the moment she seems ready to talk. ‘ yeah, absolutely –– ’ his curiosity makes him eager as he’s suddenly leading the way to the balcony. yet, before he can get to the doors, he’s too aware that there are fights breaking out around them. at a speed too fast for the people around them to comprehend, his arms are around her waist, moving her away from two brawlers that would have collided into her. his eyes move around the room, a heavy sigh on his lips before he looks back to his wife. ‘ raincheck? i need to see what’s going on, keep people from killing each other. if it gets bad, get out of here, alright? ’ he doesn’t leave it for debate, his lips pressing to her cheek before he disappears.

Her head found a place to rest against his chest, eyelids fluttering close for a moment. She took a deep breath to inhale his scent, perhaps one of the very few smells that didn’t make her sick. “I’m fine,” she said as she looked up at him. It wasn’t entirely a lie. She wasn’t feeling her best, but she was very happy about it. It was a contradiction – one both confusing and beautiful. Barry had to know and Iris had tried to find the right moment, but there was always something going on. Tonight, however, was not the night. “And miss the chance to show off my handsome husband? Never.”
his gaze trailed over her, searching for any sign to contradict her reassurances, that she really was fine. finding no physical evidence, he’s content to rest his hand at the small of her back, pulling her closer to him. ‘ show me off? you have to be joking, because no one is going to see me when you’re standing here. it hurts a little, actually. you’re kind of stealing all the attention, you know. ’ a light chuckle follow his teasing tone. ‘ are you hungry at all? i can get food, or water – or we can people watch. anything you want to do. ’
ofgumption ; iris
As tempting as it was, Iris had to shake her head. Of course she would love to dance, but she wasn’t sure if she could manage to survive it without getting sick and ruining their outfit. Iris wasn’t sure if it was normal to feel everything so intense or it was a side-effect of carrying a little speedster – but whatever it was, it certainly was quite an experience. “Thank you though. You look amazing, by the way.”
he’s worried about her – not that it’s anything new. but he could have swore that he heard her getting sick earlier and he has to hope that she didn’t venture out just for his sake if she had some type of bug and needed rest. offering a smile, his arm slips around her. ‘ not nearly as amazing as you look. you okay, though? we can sit down if you want? ’

HIS FINGERS TUG at the tie around his neck, frustrated by it as he doesn’t really wear clothes like this ever. Bart feels out of place, but he was just searching the crowd for a familiar face. Which led him into the crowd, the fabric around his neck undone and just resting there untied. He was torn between finding a friend or hiding by the food again. This leaves him bumping into someone, to which he nervously apologizes several times. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
it’s only due to the fortune of his quick reflexes that he doesn’t spill the glass of water he’d been retrieving for iris. she looked ill lately and he was beginning to feel terrible for even asking her to come out that night. instead, he free hand reaches out to steady the boy. ‘ we should probably stop running into each other like that. ’ he tries to joke, though his mind is still trying to adjust to the idea that this boy is his grandson.
If you could bring your mother back but it meant breaking up with Iris and never seeing her again, would you?
‘ i couldn’t. i tried saving her once, but flashpoint happened and the timeline was thrown out of whack, i screwed up people’s lives. i’m going to wish i had my mom every day, but i had to accept that she’s gone. ’

he hasn’t been there long, yet the empty pizza box and multiple empty containers of take out could give another impression. he leans back in the overly plush chair in bruce’s office, another bite of food put into his mouth as he waits for him to arrive. to be fair, barry had only sent the text message that he was there five minutes ago. the door clicks open and barry only just has the thought to take a quick glance around at the slight mess he’d made. his hand extends out a container in peace offering. ‘ sushi? ’

he didn’t like asking caitlin to be killer frost. barry knew it wasn’t easy for her and he would rather have his friend any day of the week, but if lives were on the line, they both knew what was necessary. his gaze fell on killer frost with a sigh, but there wasn’t time to deal with the moral dilemma. ‘ there’s a block of row homes on fire – i can get the people out but i need you to stop the flames before they spread further. ’

Even since leaving Bart, Iris had been rehearsing what she would tell her husband. But now that he was there, it seemed all the coherent sentences had left her mind and she only nodded. Actually, she wasn’t hungry and doubted she would even try the burger, for her stomach as in knots. “It was eventful.” Gathering the courage she needed, Iris reached for her husband’s hand to stop him. It was now or never. They didn’t keep secrets and she certainly wasn’t going to start now. “Wait, there is something I would like to tell you first.”
it happened occasionally that barry moved too quickly to notice the small details at first, and it wasn’t until she stopped him that he realized she’d been quiet. now that he was paying attention, pulled away from his own thoughts and distractions, he focuses on her. something is on her mind and suddenly he can push back what he was still trying to comprehend for her. ‘ yeah, of course. did something happen? is everything alright? ’ he’s quick to question, his concern for her bubbling up. his hands take hers, leading them to the couch to sit. ‘ this is good, i wanted to talk to you too but you first. ’
