Pope Francis riding by in the #popemobile past the cafe I study at most days. He was visiting Bologna for the day, in route from a migrant relief center to Piazza Maggiore for a big convocation followed by lunch with the poor. It was fun looking around at the smiling faces after he passed by. There is plenty to criticize about Catholicism and religion in general, but I genuinely appreciate the consistent concern of the Catholic Church for the poor and sick. Aside from the network of global hospitals, schools and charity organizations that do real good, it's refreshing to see the pope consistently speak positively about the poor people of the world. This sets a tone of respect, which is an important base for discussing solutions. In contrast to the apathy or outright animosity shown by Evangelical Christians in America, who have aligned themselves with a political party with an agenda that serves the interests of billionaires and millionaires (while cunningly deceiving people with the claim they are helping the average person). We just got our container of household goods, so i can paint again! Daniela hung three old portraits of the kids on the wall in the living room, which I painted last year. It's fun to have art on the walls, but I don't like the paintings, which is probably a good sign. So I need to paint new ones of everyone. I started painting this on Éowyn's 11th birthday a few days ago. It's not done, but it's close. These always look much better in real life full size, without the glare and limited contrast range of the phone camera. I need to let it sit for a few days and come back with fresh eyes when the paint is dry. But I'm proud to hang this one on the wall. #workinprogress #portraits #portrait #painting #oilpainting #art #faces #people #girl #wip (at Bologna, Italy)
Thinking about two people I love on this rainy day. Today is my daughter Èowyn's eleventh birthday. She is so passionate and full of life, destined to make her mark on the wide world waiting before her. And to inevitably be marked by it as well. The task to prepare her for this journey is overwhelming, and impossible to protect her against. Today my mother is drawing very near the end of her amazing journey through life that took her around the world and blessed the lives of everyone she met. A far too short path, with an unnecessary end from a stupid, preventable and treatable type of cancer that was allowed to lurk in her body because many of her countrymen (including friends and family that now mourn) decided, through their politics and vote, that people like her, people without lots of money and a great job, people who were already sick, didn't deserve basic healthcare. She fought bravely since 2000, but didn't have the resources to win that fight, and so joined the millions of Americans that we turn our backs on. Blessed are the poor and the sick, somewhere perhaps, but not in our country. We say we don't have the money, but somehow always find it for war and corporate subsidies. And we let corporations block cheaper Universal Healthcare so they can inflate their profits in a private extortionist market. And we tell ourselves it's good. We tell ourselves Jesus was a Capitalist too. We choose this reality, and everyone else in the world looks on bewildered. Life and death. Brilliance and stupidity. Selfishness and selflessness. It is the human story. It's beautiful and it's tragic. It's an incredible gift that dazzles and cuts deeply. It overwhelms. It is too short. And too much.
