3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

I just desperately need y’all to remember that when an addict in a 12-step program references “God”, they are not necessarily referencing the Christian god, or any formal deity for that matter. Especially in more modern AA and NA programs, “God” can be anything you want. The higher power you give yourself over to the care of can be an element of nature, a social conviction, a dead relative, the intangible connection that binds all humans together, the precious and sacred and incorporeal feeling that floods you when confronted with the blessing of fatherhood, it can truly be anything.

I need y’all to understand that Langdon most likely being in a 12-step (we actually haven’t even had that confirmed, amends are not the sole property of 12-step) does not mean The Pitt is “going the religious bullshit” route. The steps can and are worked secularly every single day. I’m an atheist with religious trauma out the ass and I still think John O’Donohue’s work is gorgeous and helpful.

I made a separate post a while ago about AA/NA’s history and very real problems and the work so many are doing to modernize and secularize it while retaining the elements that have pulled thousands of addicts onto the lifeboat of recovery. And you know what? It’s working. There are hundreds of meetings around the country run by folks who work the 12 steps and don’t give a damn whether you’re religious.

I also need y’all to know that if Langdon’s higher power is in fact God as Christian deity, that that’s okay. If he found the strength to enter and navigate recovery through surrendering control and ego to a Christian God, then good for him. (Doesn’t sound much like Frank but I’m suspending my disbelief to make a point, okay). Some of the posts I’m seeing making wild leaps and speaking so condescendingly or even with outright hostility towards recovery or the references to spirituality that have appeared in the portrayal of Frank’s recovery so far this season are so frustrating to me.

We know almost nothing about the details of Frank’s recovery and yet some of you are being so fucking glib and cruel. It’s so clear that you’ve taken in maybe three surface generalizations about addiction and recovery and run with them as fact. It’s so clear you’re not interested in coming at it with empathy and curiosity. This post is rambly and barely makes sense, but it just really got to me this morning scrolling through the dash and seeing so much scoffing and dismissing and over-simplifying going on.
