Why are people so selfish?

I know I can be selfish too sometimes, but there’s a difference between protecting your peace and only caring about yourself. What hurts the most is when you spend so much time helping people, being there for them when they’re broken, lost, or at their lowest, but the moment you make one mistake or fail to do what they want, suddenly you become the bad person in their story.

It’s painful how quickly people forget the good things you did for them just because of one fault. They act like you never cared, like you were never there for them in the first place. They demand so much from you, but when you finally say “no” because you’re tired, struggling, or simply unable to give more, they make you feel guilty for it.

I’ve realized that being too available for people only teaches them to expect you to always sacrifice yourself for them. And the sad truth is, the same people you helped won’t always be there when you’re the one falling apart.

So maybe it’s okay to stop being a people pleaser. Maybe it’s okay to choose yourself sometimes. You don’t always have to say yes just to prove you care. Saying no doesn’t make you selfish. Protecting your own peace doesn’t make you a bad person.
