In the Kingdom of Frost by Alexander Cherkasov
Everyone's all "ohhh 2026 bring back physical media" until I start talking illuminated manuscripts and then suddenly we're not on the same page anymore
Actually we are on the same page. We've been on the same page for a week because these things take forever to make
I really don’t know what crowd I expected to be in the theatre for carol at 1:20 in the afternoon on a friday but it was probably 85% old people, old het couples and halfway through the movie this old lady in front of me turned to the old dude next to her and just said “harold they’re lesbians”
Honoring 10 years of “harold they’re lesbians.” Many happy returns to all who celebrate.

Hello everyone! I made a post about Marmont and Junot on my fancy blog :D
I’m really bad at technology so it took a long time to make it work 😓 but it’s worth it because this is an interesting subject!
Napoleonic Friendships: Marshal Marmont and General Junot One of the friendships in Napoleon’s army which intrigues me the most is that of M

right! time to do some book fixing!
the patient
you can see the damage on the endpaper is pretty bad - the vertical tear where it's splitting away from the boards was already there where I got it and it's the reason for the repair. the other stuff...I think it happened when I tried to remove the stickers lol but it just looks ugly and that's it.
the tools
two pieces of green cardstock, A3 size
bone folder
pencil
box cutter
various rulers and measuring tape
PVA glue
cheap brush
paper cutter (if I didn't have one at my disposal, box cutter and a weighed down metal ruler)
so! first step: taking the goddamn thing apart. it's in pretty good condition underneath! gonna leave that be for now.
peeling what I can of the glued half of the endpaper off the boards, trying to get a more or less even surface. this is gonna take forever 💀
realised that I forgot that I'd also need the gauze stuff as I was peeling paper off, but that's a problem for later lol
to be continued!
nakey!
peeled as much as I could off, then went and sanded it smooth with a...sort of large file I found? dunno, went looking through the tools if there's any (preferably fine) sandpaper, found a huge file looking thing, used that because I couldn't be bothered to look through more toolboxes 😂 did the job
measured and cut the papers down to size. exact size, can't be bothered finding a way to trim.
carefully pried off the brown paper with the endband off the spine to reuse later. it's in good condition, as is the binding.
very naked book. positively indecent 😱
took the metal ruler, placed it on the line where the old endpapers used to be glued on, weighed it down with a large rock (I can't be the only person who used to collect rocks as a kid and still has them lying around lmao), and painted on a layer of glue
placed the endpaper and pressed it down with the bone folder. it's a rounded spine book, so this was annoying as fuck because the part where it's supposed to be glued on is at an angle. and the fucker wouldn't stick. didn't have to deal with any rounded spine books at work yet.
then repeat on the other side with the other paper.
then I had a bit of a dilemma - I initially planned to simply put it between two particle boards and plonk the big box of rocks on top, but I didn't really uhhh consider the trouble of rounded spine books?
however. I did acquire wooden screws for dad to help me make a press last week, and as much as I tried to avoid using specialized tools, yeah, yeah, this is way more likely to put pressure where it should
I'll let this dry a bit before I continue!
anyway, it worked!
now comes the gauze and the brown paper. I'm not using the stuff made for bookbinding, just normal non-sterile cotton gauze, but eh it looks super close to what's on the spine, so whatever. don't care.
right! the next step is the gauze and the brown paper with the endband I saved.
I'm using the press only as a clamp here so I can manhandle it without getting glue all over everything - it's only tightened enough to keep the book in place. put a guide for the glue on top, in my case a metal measuring stick (a strip of paper or plastic would also work, it really doesn't matter); not necessary, I'm just a perfectionist.
(also it's really satisfying to peel dry glue off metal. just saying 😂)
then I went at it in stages - brush glue on the green part, place the gauze, more glue on top, brush the spine, tamp down the gauze, another layer on top, then I turned the press upside down...
...placed the guide again, layer of glue, press the gauze, more glue. I left the frayed bit sticking up. I'll trim it when it's dry, it's just too annoying otherwise.
then I turned the press right side up again, and checked which is the top and which is the bottom like a thousand times (left side was the top) because there was only one endband and it was on top and if I had time to acquire endbands, I'd do it better and put it on both ends, but we're doing this now before I run out of momentum, so I'll just restore it to how it was.
anyway. put some scrap paper down, smeared glue on the paper strip, placed it on the table (I'm just doing this shit on the kitchen table) to take the pic, turned the press on its side, and on it went.
I think it turned out really nice! and now guess what, gotta let it dry again :D
(terrified of the next and final part, btw)
alright! finally gathered the courage to complete it!
first, protected the table with a garbage bag, aligned everything so it was right side up and put a sheet of paper between the endpapers to protect it from glue
brushed on glue with a cheap brush. yeah the paper warps but it'll go back to normal once it's stuck down. also the old bottle of cheap craft glue I had around doesn't play as nice as the stuff we use at work, it's kinda like brushing on chewing gum. but it'll do. note to self: get a better grade of PVA.
removed the protective paper and carefully placed the block on the boards, using the old glue lines as a guide. smoothed it a bit. placed it down, put in a fresh protective paper, repeated the same on the other side.
there! it's not 100% perfectly aligned because rounded spine books are weird and I've never actually done this before, but I think it's alright. I definitely got it in a readable state.
last step: put it between two boards and plopped a big heavy box full of rocks on top. could have also put it between two boards and then in the press, but these specific boards don't fit lol
now it has to dry overnight and then it goes back on the shelf :D

“Medieval peasants couldn’t handle my Spotify playlist” but could YOU handle a medieval bard relaying the epic of Beowulf over the course of an hour? Humble yourself.

Editorial ReviewsFinally, the long awaited recording is made! Since 1990, Benjamin Bagby has been performing the great epic Beowulf at major
For context, here's Benjamin Babgy's lovely harp-accompanied version; it covers roughly the first third of the poem and takes an hour and forty minutes.

#.....also. i reread this and i cannot imagine the yakety sax speed that bard would be going at to get through beowulf in an hour #but i *would* enjoy it
