@silverthroatednightingale
itâs never a normal temperature anymore itâs always some fucking bullshit
I need you young people to know it was almost never this hot when I was a child. Millennials and Gen Xers are all nostalgic and excited about summer because it was about ten to twenty degrees cooler to experience it back then!
I cannot express to you how FAST it has gone. I grew up in a world that does not exist now. We're starting on the path to reverse it, globally. You might not know how much solar has EXPLODED in the last decade or two. It's gone from a side thing, a weirdo novelty that was just Not Viable... to whole countries investing in infrastructure. but we have to keep fighting big oil and fascism everywhere we can in order to keep on this road to a new better less scorching burning earth.
But any time you wonder wtf the weather is doing- THIS IS NOT NORMAL, NO. THIS IS NOT WHAT IT WAS EVEN TWENTY YEARS AGO.
I remember sitting on the little grassy slope across from the pool and eating a little bagged pb&j sandwich after swim lessons, and it being a gorgeous balmy 75ish degrees, and that being normal. That was the standard for a typical US Pacific Northwest summer in the early-mid 2000's: 65-85 degrees.
Smoke in the air was rare, and on those exceptional occasions (once every few years) we knew it was from a wildfire in California. Now Oregon and Washington have their own fire season. I've driven through orange smoke so thick I couldn't see further than two or three blocks. One of my siblings saw a wildfire crest the hill a few miles away from where they were living in college, and was ready to evacuate. That same summer my parents had to evacuate twice--once from their home, and then again when the fire got so close that the evacuation site was within the mandatory evacuation radius.
The Hood River Valley has huge, jagged burn scars now, visible from the highway. They weren't there when I was a kid, going to Multnomah Falls to hike. It was unthinkable then that those lush, green, mossy hillsides could burn.
The grief of this is indescribable.
We can have a balanced world again, and we will have a balanced world again, despite the insane motherfuckers trying to burn it down for a few last dollars, but there are scars that will remain.
The forests will regrow, but they will never be the same. I will survive (I hope to god I see the other side of this, or at least the point of permanent turn), but I know the smell of a wildfire now. I will never again see that specific kind of smoke in the air without an animal fear rising within me, without the memory of my family in a tent trailer having to leave their evacuation site, and the memory of reading what happened to Blue River in the middle of night.
Fuck the oil industry. Fuck the US military. Fuck AI. Fuck the data centers. Fuck those motherfucking shitstained rat bastards. May they leave this world in pain and may their graves be pissed on forever.

the problem with tumblr spells is all of you lil sluts are casting and not giving it time to charge so you're all casting cantrips and not 9th level death spells. everyone wants to be the one to take them down no one wants to be the one who assists
we're going to try again witha little but minimal casting
IT will happen in August of 2026. like to charge and reblog to cast but cast sparingly
Wait stop. everyone +like now and spread it a little but cast on the same day in August. lets try August 6th or something.
actually the way society hates both perverts and asexuals is kinda funny. Real "Anyone who thinks about sex more than I do is a porn-addicted degenerate and anyone who thinks about sex less than I do is a loser weirdo or a puritan" energy
"normal" really is just a locally crowdsourced bell curve, huh

summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well.

btw i love when dubcon is used in fiction as a way to explore characters. i love when characters donât understand how to âproperlyâ ask for consent because they have never had their consent respected in their lives. i love when traumatized adult characters make potentially unwise choices about what to do with their bodies because they have the autonomy to do so. i love when characters make choices that i personally wouldnât make, but i can totally understand how they got there. i love when characters have complex, fucked up, unhealthy dynamics, but still care about each other and want to do better. i love when writers trust audience members to read between the lines instead of spoon feeding them moral lessons. i love when characters are allowed to actually fuck up and have mistakes to learn from!
Watching my toddler figure out how to language is fascinating. Yesterday we were stumped when he kept insisting there was a âLego winnerâ behind his bookshelf - it turned out to be a little Lego trophy cup. Not knowing the word for âtrophyâ, heâd extrapolated a word for âthing you can winâ. And then, just now, he held up his empty milk container and said, âMummy? Itâs not rubbish. Itâs allowed to be a bottle.â - meaning, effectively, âI want this. Donât throw it away.â But to an adult ear, thereâs something quite lovely about âitâs allowed to be a bottle,â as if weâre acknowledging that the object is entitled to keep its title even in the absence of the original function.
Another good post to read for those writing small human characters.Â
My son was about three when he came to me in the middle of the day and said, âMommy, thereâs a knight behind the bush.â I thought he meant a toy knight or something. So I follow him outside and he goes, âListen. Do you hear it? Itâs night behind the bush.â It was a cricket. A cricket was standing in the little patch of shade under the bush, chirping. So, my son saw this dark area with accompanying nighttime sounds and decided, okay, well, that is a night right there. Their brains are incredible.
My little bean knows sheâs two, constantly saying proudly âIâm two!â And the other day she saw this very frail old lady who looked one foot in the grave, pulled a face and said âoh shiiiit. Sheâs three.â I almost screamed.
I live in Korea and have a lot of international friends, and the same is true with language barriers in adults.Â
*Looking at a bowl of pears* âCan you please pass me the⌠appleâs friend?âÂ
OH SHIT SHEâS THREE
the two year old bean is now 11, thatâs how long this post has been going around, and I STILL bust out laughing like a maniac whenever I read âoh shiiiit. Sheâs three.â
Yeah, Iâm not ready for fozâs kid to be a teenâŚ.
