I love Marvel, tis probably my favourite thing. I also like CoD (no, I have not played the games T^T), Arcane, DC (Batfam and Young Justice stuff mainly), occasionally I’ll indulge in the Marauders 🤷‍♂️

I also love musicals, Hadestown is my all time favourite 🫶🫶

While Grace is teaching the Eridians, he mentions how important socialization and pack bonding is for humans. Humans require a community to thrive and get depressed if they're left alone, so it's best to keep them in groups. However humans can pack bond with anything, and Grace is very close to the Eridians, so he's okay.

The Eridians misunderstand him, and proceed to panic because they only have one human. They only have one human but it turns out you need to keep them in packs. They can die if they're isolated for to long and they can't let Grace die this is bad bad bad.

So they send a message to earth, asking if anybody would be willing to volunteer to live on Erid with Grace. They stress that while this is a life or death matter, they need the human to be a willing participant. That all of their needs and wants would be met and that the Eridians would give Earth information and technology in exchange. The volunteer would be given a life of luxury in exchange for living on Erid with Grace.

Unfortunately, there is a mistranslation, and the humans think that the Eridians require a sacrifice otherwise they will use their resources against earth. In order to avoid a possible interstellar war with an alien species, they choose a convict who has a life sentence to be locked in a bare rocket and blasted off to Erid.

That is how Simon, the only survivor of his religious extremist cult, ended up on the SM-13 headed to an alien planet against his will.

Graces frequent crying would translate into a lot of wailing as an Eridian. I feel like he’d have a hard time speaking not only because he’s just not used to it- but because his emotions make him sing without meaning to. Younglings learn fairly quickly how to control their emotions so they don’t constantly interrupt themselves with unconscious sounds. But grace is so used to expressing his emotions as a human (and he’s a big cryer) that I don’t think he’d ever really learn how to suppress a keen when really emotional. Rocky and all the other Eridians would get used to this and would ofc be incredibly patient with him :]

I think there’d be a few times that Grace would freak some people out with his whining - the sound usually means there’s a small hatchling in distress lol

Twice, Ryland Grace is faced with the same pivotal decision: to save himself, or to save an entire planet.

The first time:

He is surrounded by white (bravery) and is wearing yellow (cowardice)

The world is telling him to be brave, but he can’t, not yet, because he is a coward.

He has lost his identity and autonomy

The decision is already made (he must die)

He is all alone (he doesn’t have the bravery gene)

The second time:

He is surrounded by yellow (cowardice) and is wearing white (bravery)

He is in the middle of his namesake: a field of rye. The field is the yellow of cowardice; that is who he was, but he can’t be that, not anymore, because he is brave.

You know who you are. You’ll do great.

It’s so important to me that he says “Dr. Captain Ryland Grace” when sending the Beatles back to Earth. Because the Hail Mary was made for a Captain, a Scientist, and an Engineer. And Grace only claims the Captain and Scientist parts. Because Rocky is the Engineer! Rocky is the Hail Mary’s Engineer!!!

I was once talking to my 75 year old Chinese dad in passing about a trans friend of mine not getting along with her family and he asked why and I said err, because she's trans, dad.

He asked: "Oh, was she the only son or something before *waves hand*?" and I was like, warily, no she has two brothers. And he responded with a great deal of confusion: "Then what's their problem?!?!"

Later on: "Anyway, even if she WAS the only son, that's not her problem, that's THEIR problem. They should have had more sons if they were going to be bothered about it."

Knowing what I know about chinese culture there’s something so beautifully simple about his logic of “no son to carry on family name/look after them in old age/all the other stuff? Skill issue! Should’ve had more sons! Should’ve kept the family unit strong yourself! Blaming your daughter for your own failure of family planning is W E A K!” and then he learns there are more sons and it completely breaks his train of logic because if yes to more sons then why issue?? You have two others and you’re mad you don’t have three?? Whack. Greedy.

I can already envision him as an ancient lord of a powerful house looking down his nose at the latest messenger bringing gossip from the house of his offspring’s friend and going “now they have a daughter to marry into another family for powerful alliances and two sons to take over her former duties and somehow they’re still complaining about their good fortune? They shall not survive the winter.” and then sipping his tea with all the grim satisfaction of someone about to watch an unnecessary soap opera of drama unfold from a safe distance or something

"Grace doesnt have enough food on the jorney to Erid" yeah but Rocky does. Rocky has plenty, in fact, Rocky had enough food for 23 eridians for a bit over 30 years (because they were also expected to make the jorney back) Rocky has so much food, and he cant give any to grace because it will kill him. Every meal he makes he can hear Grace's body slowly collapsing in on itself from hunger. Rocky has to sit there, with way more than enough food for 2 and still watch his best friend starve to death.
