Bees and honey have a connection with death, the afterlife and hidden knowledge in many cultures and mythologies. Perhaps it is the perceived eternal quality of honey (it can be used to preserve foods, and was used by the Mamluks, and probably many others, to preserve corpses) that gave it this association with death, the afterlife and immortality. Sophocles and Virgil describe the souls of the deceased as a swarm of bees buzzing in the field and the bee itself bears chthonic associations. The goddess Melissa, who nurtured Zeus, also produced the first swarm of bees and was also privy to esoteric knowledge.

The Fantastic Four: The House of Horrors written by William Johnstone 1968
Western society has accepted as unquestionable a technological imperative that is quite as arbitrary as the most primitive taboo: not merely the duty to foster invention and constantly to create technological novelties, but equally the duty to surrender to these novelties unconditionally, just because they are offered, without respect to their human consequences.
- Lewis Mumford
