WHO WILL WIN IF WE PUT THESE TWO CHARACTERS AGAINST EACH OTHER?
On tumblr, I've seen a lot of tournament polls (and made quite a few myself), where you put two characters against each other, and let people vote for their favorites. Who wins can depend on if that character simply is more popular or well known than the other. Like, a character from a super well known TV show will have more votes than a character from a very niche show that only aired in one country.
But, I thought... what if I choose to be super chaotic and made a blog where characters are put against each other, but you don't know beforehand who the character you've submitted is up against? It can be anyone! It can be an unfair game, where you have submitted a super niche character and they're up against a giant popular character. OR, you get lucky, and the opponent is someone equally, or even LESS known/popular than your character is.
The way this blogs works is: You go submit Character A. You can submit a picture of them too, it makes my job a bit easier in case the character is hard to find pictures of online. Then, someone else is gonna submit Character B. You don't know beforehand who it is, and you're only gonna know once the poll comes out. It's left to fate, but let's hope it's a character less popular than yours!
I myself will mostly randomize who will be pitted against who. Sometimes by a wheel of fate, sometimes I just pick the next submission on top. However, if I myself know the character (like, if it is a fairly famous one), I will try to be a bit more fair and try to pair it up with another character I also recognize. HOWEVER, if I myself do not know either of the characters submitted, then I can't help if one gets an unfair advantage due to being more known. Sorry.
Let's take the rules, questions etc under the cut.
Approved submissions:
TV show and Movie characters, both cartoon and live action
Book characters (but they need to have an illustration for reference)
Video game characters
Characters from commercials (yes, even cartoon chocolate bars are fine!)
Comic book and graphic novel characters
Webcomic characters
Characters from music videos
Characters from youtube series
NOT approved submissions:
It's hard to say "OCs in general" because you can always argue that "every character ever created is someone's OC". But like... don't submit your own OC. Submit someone else's, and preferably from a published piece of work.
Fankid OCs. Even if it's well-known ones like Screwball from "Daughter of Discord". I'm gonna be boring but stick to canon in the polls.
Also not fanfiction OCs in general, like the three extra Baudelaires in "The six Baudelaires AU". If you submit Nick Baudelaire, then I'm sorry to say he'll be referred to as Klaus Baudelaire (movie version) in the polls.
Real people. The only exception to this is if you're submitting a characterization of a real person - like the version of Marie Antoinette in The Rose of Versailles. That one's ok, but don't submit real life person Marie Antoinette.
The polls will look like this:
A picture of character A next to a picture of character B.
The poll will say "Character A vs Character B"
The three options are:
Character A
Character B
I can't choose
If the third option is the most popular, then both characters win (or lose! Depends on how you look at it). "I can't choose" both works for the ones who genuinely cannot choose between them, and for the ones that does not know either character but still wants to vote. The reason I didn't include a "I don't know either character" option is because I know from experience that it's not fun submitting characters only for them to not get good votes because no one knows them - and because this blog most likely will get a LOT of niche characters submitted, I want to avoid every single poll in a row not have a winner because no one knows either character.
To answer some questions:
Can I submit the same character more than once? Yes. Maybe they got an unfair challenge last time, so let's give them a second chance. However, if I notice that the same character is submitted like 10 times, then I'm not gonna include them again.
Can I submit the same character but in different adaptations? Of course! It is possible that the same character exists in different adaptations, and is different depending on the version. You could submit them in their original book form, and then submit them again, but this time in the movie adaptation. Just make sure to write "1987 movie version", "2002 cartoon version" etc.
Can I choose which two characters I want to be pitted against each other? No, I want it to be up to fate. You can however, if you want, suggest several characters in one ask. But then none of them will be pitted against each other.
The ask box is not opened! How do I send my suggestions? If the ask box isn't opened, it means that I'm currently having a lot of suggestions and need to pause from more coming in. You just have to wait a bit!
Can I submit a controversial character/Character from famously problematic media? Listen, I can't keep track of every controversial or problematic character/media in the world, so chances are I wouldn't know. But even if I did, I'd still have the character there. It could be an advantage for the character they're pitted against to get more votes if your submitted one is famously problematic or controversial. THIS BEING SAID, if I notice that a character is offensive in a way that will upset people, then I might not include them in a poll.
What pictures of the characters am I allowed to submit? Preferably high quality, or at least so that you can see the character clearly. Also, if you pick them in a group photo, be VERY SPECIFIC which one they are.
My character does not have a last name. Is that ok? Yes! Just write "-name- from -media-"! And honestly, you can write the media they're from even if they DO have last names. It gets the job easier for me and if you didn't submit a photo, I don't accidentally find a picture of the wrong person.
The character I want to submit is unnamed, and only has descriptions about them. Is that ok? Yep! Once again, just write the media they're from, like "Tie-Dye girl from The Parent Trap 1998"
The questions and list of approved/not approved suggestions will be updated if needed!
