Snake Sauna: How to Solve Stuck Shed
Stuck shed can be a concern for any new ball python keeper. For those encountering stuck shed for the first time, it is common to hear others suggest soaking your ball python in warm water. When we take a look at ball python behavior, Ball pythons would not naturally sit in bodies of water, but instead find a burrow in the ground which maintains humidity. Furthermore, being placed in a body of water can be very stressful to the animal. Instead, it is better to make a Snake Sauna which raises the humidity level to remove stuck without placing your snake in a scary situation.
Aside from natural behavior, it should not be necessary to soak your ball python. Ball pythons require a constant humidity of at least 55%, using a digital hygrometer to measure. If the humidity is any lower it could risk dehydration of the snake. Dehydration, soaking in a water bowl, and stuck shed are signs of incorrect husbandry and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Supplies: Home storage bin with locking lid, preferably without ventilation holes Coco husk chips (or your favorite water holding substrate) Water proof, digital thermometer Warm water (90-95 degrees) Large towel
Grab your home storage tub and make sure itâs clean. A tub without holes is preferable because it will be better to keep the humidity in. Ball pythons do not have a quick respiratory rate and locking lid bins are not air tight, so a suffocating snake will not be a concern.
Fill the bottom of the tub with 1-2 inches of coconut chip. The coco chip should be slightly moist before starting.
Next, grab some hot water. The water should be 90-95 degrees, be sure to measure it with your thermometer so it doesnât get too hot!Â
Fill the coco husk approximately halfway with water and place the lid on the tub immediately.
Go get the snake, place it in the tub, and replace the lid.Â
Then throw a towel over the top. The towel will help to make the snake feel secure and hidden.
Leave the snake alone, in the box for 15-20 minutes. As the snake moves through the coco chips, aided by the humidity, it should rub off most, if not all, of the stuck shed.
After the time has passed, remove the towel. You can see how the warm water raised the humidity and fogged up the tub. Thatâs good news, it means your sauna is working!
Next you can check on the snake.
 Most of the stuck shed should be rubbed off, however if there are still some stuck pieces you may want to add a little more hot water and try again for another 10 minutes.
Why you should NOT breed your pet reptile:
I know with the reptile breeding season starting, a lot of people get really interested in hatching out their own cute little baby reptiles! There are plenty of reasons to breed your reptiles, but I think a lot of prospective breeders donât take the time to consider the possibilities for problems that arise from breeding. This is mainly for animals that have large pet populations - ball pythons, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, crested geckos, etc., but can apply to many other species as well. Here are a few reasons why you should reconsider breeding your pets.
1. Breeding takes a toll. Itâs important to be well versed on reptile body condition, general health, proper breeding weights, and ages before pairing up your reptiles. Pair them too early, and the potential for breeding related complications drastically increases. Egg binding, calcium crashes, death of the mother, failure to regain weight, poor calcification of the eggs, and hatchlings that fail to thrive can all be issues that pop up from breeding unhealthy or unfit animals. Are you prepared to deal with these issues, both emotionally and financially? Are your animals healthy enough to deal with the strain on their bodies?
2. Are your reptiles âbreeder qualityâ? A lot of people want to breed their reptiles to see the cute babies they produce! This is not necessarily a bad thing, but itâs important to keep in mind that if your animals arenât prime examples of their morph (or if you donât know the morph or genetic history of the animal) they shouldnât be bred. One of the reasons isâŚ
3. The market is flooded with âpet qualityâ and unhealthy animals looking for homes. Do you really want to contribute to overproduced populations of animals seeking homes? If you arenât able to sell your animals you have to be prepared to house however many you produce for the entirety of their lives. Is it ethical for you to be breeding pet quality animals?
4. Breeding is inherently expensive and you are unlikely to make a profit, even if youâre breeding top quality animals. Youâve got to buy incubators, thermostats, hatchling racks, breeder quality animals, feeders for those animals, cleaning supplies, husbandry supplies, etc! Thatâs just scratching the surface of the things you need before you begin breeding!
5. Always keep in mind the reason you want to breed your reptiles. If your reason is âbecause I want toâ with no real goal in mind, you probably arenât ready to breed them.
((this post isnât directed at anyone in particular, itâs just something I see happen every year when the breeding season begins!))
Isopods are arthropods of the Class Crustacea (though they look insect-like, they are related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimp!). They are known by many regional names â sowbug, woodlouse, pillbug, potato bug, armadillo bug, and roly poly. Some species roll up, and others do not. There are both aquatic and terrestrial isopod species, and this care sheet deals with terrestrial species.
Isopods are amazing both as unique pets and for their abilities as terrarium/vivarium clean-up crews. There are many different species available both from the wild (check with your local laws before collecting) and available for purchase, and even many captive bred color variations that have been developed. They are extremely easy, low-maintenance creatures with just a few very specific requirements.
Enclosure
Enclosures can be elaborate or simple.Â
The most important aspect of isopod habitats is the humidity. Isopods breathe using gills, and if their habitat is too dry, they will desiccate and die. Even if humidity is restored after a dry period, their gills may be damaged and not work as well afterwards, so itâs important that the humidity stays consistently high.Â
A small to medium sized Rubbermaid, Sterlite, Ziploc, or other similar container would be fine. You can simply poke a hole or two in the lid. Some species have very little need for air exchange and do fine if you just open the lid once a week; others, like A. vulgare, require more ventilation.
They are a popular way to house isopods for people have trouble with soil mites (which are harmless to reptiles but may out-compete isopod cultures and are considered unattractive). A hole can be cut in the lid of a watertight storage container (Ziploc Weathertight boxes work for larger cultures, for example, and for smaller cultures, any of the reusable-disposable food storage containers seem to work fine â if they hold water when you flip them over youâre good), and a .3 micron filter pad which allows air to pass can be glued over the hole. Hot glue works best. This allows air to pass but no mites can get in, and can keep your culture nice and humid. (Unfortunately I donât have any pictures of this as Iâm not keeping any of my cultures like this currently.)
I personally prefer to use small plastic animal carriers (such as Leeâs Kritter Keepers or Exo Terra Faunariums) because I like to be able to see my isopods, especially the adorable little babies. You can also use any small aquarium, glass or acrylic.Â
However, with a plastic or screen mesh lid, they do not hold in enough humidity for most isopod species on their own. Modifying them couldnât be simpler!
Place plastic wrap over the entire top of your container.
Snap your lid over the plastic wrap.
Use your ultra-cool Badtz-Maru pushpins to poke some holes in the plastic wrap. If you donât have ultra-cool Badz-Maru pushpins you can use any other kind of pin you have to poke your holes.
Substrate
There are many options for substrate for your isopods. Some species burrow, and some species live mostly on top of the substrate but hide under leaf litter and other detritus. There are two general schools of thought on substrate.Â
One is to keep them on a basic moisture-holding substrate such as coco fiber (Eco Earth) and provide all their food.
The other is to keep them on a diverse substrate that also provides them with decaying wood, leaf litter and detritus to form most of their diet.Â
Both methods work for most species, but in some cases the latter is vastly preferred, as some species feed almost exclusively on decaying wood and leaves. I have kept them both ways with great success and tons of babies. I prefer the diverse substrate technique because itâs easier and less maintenance.
They must also have something to hide under, such as leaf litter (live oak leaf litter, magnolia leaf litter), cork bark, or even a couple layers of cardboard. They will go under the hides to keep moist and regulate their humidity.
Whatever choice you go with, the substrate should be kept slightly damp, to keep the humidity in the enclosure up.Â
This is the inside of my Giant Canyon Isopod (Porcellio dilatatus) enclosure. The substrate is made up of a mix of composted soil, coco fiber, a little bit of sand, fermented oak sawdust, decaying leaves, long fiber sphagnum moss, and hardwood (aspen shavings). The aspen shavings will slowly decay into food for the isopods as well. In addition, Iâve included live oak leaves as a hiding place and additional food source. They are harder for isopods to eat (and decay slower) but high in nutrients. (This is a bioactive substrate in and of itself, as it has not been âcookedâ to kill bacteria.)
Whatever hide you use should not be subject to molding (though isopods will feed on some fungus; I once had a mushroom pop up in one enclosure and they swarmed it and devoured it completely in one day, it was adorable!). Although cork bark works well in humid habitats, and I use it in some of my enclosures, it should be noted is very hard to get them out of the little crevices if they hide in them and you need to transfer them between habitats
Feeding
Isopods are detrivores, and feed primarily on decaying leaves and wood. For most species, other food works best as a supplement, and you will experience fewer problems with mites, fruit flies, and other pests. Avoid plain grain entirely. Too much âfreshâ food of any kind can crash your colony.

Some people raise isopods entirely on coco fiber and feed their isopods nothing but potato and seem to do just fine, but with many species you will have much better luck (and fewer pests and mold) if you offer primarily leaf litter and hardwood with a sprinkle of other food occasionally, and do not offer excessive amounts of fish food or vegetables.Â
Leaf litter should be varied, and preferably naturally fallen, brown and aged. Soft leaf litter is easier to eat, while harder leathery leaf litter is higher in nutrients. I leave some leathery leaf litter whole to provide hiding places and grind some of it into a powder and mix it into the substrate as an easier to eat food source.
In addition to a substrate containing a copious amount of leaf litter and decaying wood, I personally offer my isopods (certain species) just a smidge of Morning Wood, a sprinkle of New Life Spectrum fish food pellets once every couple of weeks, and vegetables rarely (more often to certain species). In terms of vegetables, I feed only as much as can be consumed in a day or so, which is a minuscule amount in even my largest colony. I offer the same vegetables I offer my feeder insect colonies, which are the same healthy vegetables that I would feed to a herbivorous lizard. The exception to this list is I also sometimes offer them a bit of mushroom!
Feeding too much fish food or vegetable matter is a sure way to grow mold. (Carrot and potato, though not the most nutritious, will be eaten, and can often last for a long time, but may suddenly go bad in the worst way in the humid, warm habitat. I donât feed them.)
Handling
Be extremely careful moving and handling isopods. They are actually quite delicate. Their carapace (exoskeleton) will be crushed and cracked if you pick them up with your fingers. They may survive for a short time but will succumb later.
It is best to use enclosure decor such as leaves or pieces of cardboard to transfer them. If you need to move a bunch, you can place a piece of cardboard, egg carton, or paper towel in the enclosure for a while and then move that, or tap them off into the new location.
Species
There are many species available to the hobbyist, and among those species there are many color varieties available which breed true. Each has unique traits which make them better suited to different vivariums when used in bioactive substrates, and influences their care requirements in captivity. These are just a few common species.
Porcellio sp. âOrangeâ (also called âSpanish Orangeâ or âGiant Orangeâ) â A bright colored, true-breeding color morph of Porcellio (normally grey), these are extremely hardy and very prolific. They do great in a variety of terrariums. They do not roll up and grow to 15mm. Other morphs include âCalicoâ and âDalmationâ (Porcellio scaber), and of course the normal grey Porcellio scaber. (Note that if you mix color morphs like Orange and Calico [derived from Orange] they will interbreed and lose their distinctness.)
Armadillidum nasatum âPeach Pillbugsâ â This is the peach morph of the normally grey A. nasatum roly poly (14mm). Iâve found that they will ignore most fish food and feed primarily on decaying leaves, but they love a fresh leaf vegetable as well. I give them a tiny torn piece of collard green and they will swarm it and devour it in a day. Slow growing (take a year to mature) but mine are very prolific in terms of babies. Both the peach and wild morphs are well suited to a variety of terrariums as clean-up crew and can tolerate low ventilation. This is a rolling species, though primarily the babies do so.
Armadillidium maculatum âZebra Pillbugsâ â Black and white stripes set these little roly poly isopods apart. Like A. nasatum, they seem to ignore fish food over a diet of wood and leaf litter, and their care is similar. They grow slowly to 15mm.
Porcellio dilatatus âGiant Canyonâ â These are one of the biggest terrestrial isopod available commercially at 19mm. Captive specimens traded in the hobby come from Southern California, are more resistant to desiccation than other species of isopod, and are thus quite suited to dryer bioactive setups, such as those for leopard geckos and bearded dragons.  However, they can also tolerate higher humidity. They also curl up readily.
Porcellionides pruinosus âPowdery Blue Isopodâ â This isopod is sometimes used as a feeder for reptiles, amphibians, and other invertebrates due to its softer carapace and grows to 12mm. They are generally orange but some have a waxy blue bloom that gives them their common name.Â
Trichorhina tomentosa âMicro White, White Micropod, Dwarf Whiteâ â Used as a feeder for small amphibians and inverts, and as a clean up crew in terrariums, these also have the benefit of being ignored by larger terrarium inhabitants like geckos and other lizards at only 5mm (rarely more than 4mm). They are voracious in large colonies. Micro whites are from Central and South America, though they have now been introduced to Florida. As a tropical isopod they do best in warm and humid terrariums. Â They are faster growing than larger isopods, and reproduce through parthenogenesis, making them exceptionally prolific despite having fewer babies at a time.
Isopoda sp. âJungle Micropod, Micro Purple, Dwarf Purpleâ â Not actually purple, but they kind of look a little grey-purpley from a distance. Specimens in the hobby come from a collection made in Costa Rica. They donât burrow and rarely cling to things, but like to hide under leaf litter and other detritus, which makes them good feeders for small herps. They are also easy to raise and prolific, and like warmth and humidity.
There are many other species, each of which may be suited to different situations and vivariums.

Pothos!Â
Probably at least 50% of the plants in both of my tanks are pothos. Itâs incredibly easy to grow and very hard to kill (whether by living conditions or a heavy animal climbing all over it - it can usually take it). Once it gets going, youâll have so much green in there. I love it. Thereâs also several color varieties so you donât have to stick with just the green kind if you want more interesting colors: satin pothos is my absolute favorite. Marble queen (I think) is also another pretty one.
I also have:Â
croton - beautiful plant with colorful leaves, but it gets pretty big so there has to be space for it. However, there are several kinds of croton, including small ones with different shaped leaves, that work as well. Iâm not sure what the exact croton I use is called, but I think a lot of stores like walmart and lowes where i shop for plants consider it a sort of âgenericâ croton
maranta - another one that grows very quickly, and itâs beautiful, but more picky on growing conditions than pothos. My best growing maranta is on the cool/humid side under the light
creeping fig - this one grows pretty quickly, and looks nice. itâs small and a little more delicate while itâs acclimating. If you introduce it before the animal is in, it should be okay. If it is added later, pay it special attention daily to make sure it can acclimate.Â
rainbow spike moss - this is one of my favorites, but iâve found it to be quite challenging to establish. I have some growing pretty well in one tank right now (and a few growing outside my vivs just for fun), but iâve made several attempts inside the tanks before which have all ended with a dead plant. Theyâre very picky. The one I have in the viv right now is planted right next to the maranta, in the cool/humid side.Â
bonsai tree - i have one i picked up from walmart. iâm not sure what kind it is, but i really like having it in there
A few others I donât have right now but that Iâd still recommend:
fittonia (nerve plant)
polka dot plant
snake plant
spider plant
pilea, begonia, and/or bromeliads
I really love browsing for plants whenever I can, and if you get the chance to check out local stores with nurseries, youâll find plenty that arenât on this list. There are so many. The things you want to look for when considering a plant are itâs temperature, water, and light needs, as well as if it can survive a large snake sitting on top of it. Soil needs are also a factor: specific pH requirements can affect whether the plant will thrive in your substrate or not.Â
As well, youâll want to clean every plant you get, to make sure you arenât bringing in outside contaminants that could harm your snake or other plants. Things like pests and fertilizers. Itâs called plant processing, and is pretty easy and doesnât usually take very long. Youâll also want to make sure the plant is safe for your reptile! This is my favorite list to check when looking at a new plant. It is extensive and lists the BAD plants, but also why they are bad (for instance, is it bad only if eaten, or is it bad for them to touch? etc)

Keeping snakes in bins?
So Sterling Exotics is looking to sell several of their ball pythons because of space issues, and I was toying with the idea of buying one from them. It will be a hard time convincing my parents, but thatâs for another post. I want to do a little more research on ball pythons before I even broach the subject to the parental units, despite the fact that I work them them almost every day and know a lot. Specifically about keeping them in bins. Iâve seen several people here on tumblr keep their snakes in plastic bins, not like the tubs in rack systems but like the big storage ones from Walmart. Iâve also heard that theyâre good for humidity? If this is true, whatâs the best way to modify one(adding a mesh screen to the lid, etc.) for a snake? Whatâs the best way to heat one properly? I figure that a bin is WAY cheaper than a huge terrarium like Noel has, which is what my dad would complain about (having to get another tank, that is).
Does anyone have any good advice? (Advice on convincing reluctant parents would also be appreciated)

Ooo thank you my dear Tails :) There are really great benefits to keeping snakes in tubs. Heat and humidity is a breeze to maintain. Trust me, I live in the desert where humidity is frequently below 30% (itâs 12% right now).
Hereâs my guide on how to set up your very own tub! Youâll want a tub with a locking lid, since you donât have a rack system. Ball pythons are seriously good at escaping and your average lid just wonât do.
As for the heat source, you will need an under tub heater, or UTH, with a thermostat. The best website to order UTH from is Reptile Basics. Their website is a little tricky though, so hereâs this to help you navigate it. The cheapest thermostat is the hydrofarm jump start.

Hereâs the fun post! Well, I think itâs fun. I made this for everyone who probably doesnât spend nearly 24/7 in ball python forums. This is a list of common terminology used when describing ball pythons. If there is something you would like added, please let me know! The red marks are highlighting an example of one location where the term happens. Both images portray the term. If the image does not have a source, that is because it is mine.
[full view] A distinct wild-type pattern, where spots occur in the middle of the lighter markings, causing them to appear like E.T. the alien. [img 1]

Have reptile, need tile?
Tile is a great thing in pretty much any reptile tank. Itâs a fine substrate for many species and can be used to create warm, belly heat-providing basking spots quite easily! Hereâs a list of some websites that offer free samples of tile. Be sure that you get ceramic/porcelain tile or stone tile; donât get glass or plastic! Remember that reptiles get around better on textured material. USA (some of these will do Canada as well) American Slate- you have to contact them for free samples. I havenât given it a shot, so Iâm not sure how generous they are with their samples. BuildDirect- up to five free samples- I suggest going for slate tile or the outdoor pavers. These are totally free, including shipping- and you donât need to put in any credit card info either. BuildDirect also has turf samples if you want to play around with astroturf in your tank. Fireclay Tile- five free samples and they use environmentally friendly, lead-free glazes. This is a small business so if you wanna like, buy tile from them⌠not a bad idea, yâknow? Thereâs a five dollar shipping charge here. I donât quite know what their texture is like, but they do these cute thin brick tiles that could add some nice texture to a tank. Florida Tile- limit of three free samples per day. You have to give them âproject information,â so just fill that in with your own information. I think they sell mostly to contractors, but as far as I know, private individuals can order, too. If they ask, just say youâre working on an animal enclosure. GoHaus- up to six free samples. MundoTile- Iâm not sure how many free samples theyâll give you! Snapstone- theyâll send you four 6x6 samples for a small shipping fee.
In addition, I found a few places doing cork tile samples. Cork tile is an amazing insulator! I donât know if you could use these for backgrounds, but with winter coming, you might want to pick up some of these if youâre doing a diy insulator for any of your tanks. Duro Design- they have three sample packs to choose from. Cork, bamboo, and âother.â You have to enter an estimate of how many square feet your project needs. I put in â10â because thatâs how many square feet Iâd need to build insulators for the two cages Iâm thinking of making insulators for. They said something about their flooring people contacting me and required my phone number, so weâll see how that goes. iFloor- theyâll send you five samples! They did not require any credit card information from me. iCorkFloor- theyâll send you at least five samples, but you have to pay a small shipping fee.Â
I ordered samples from BuildDirect, GoHaus, Duro Design, and iFloor, so Iâll post about those as they come in. And then, one from overseas⌠UK
MarleyEternit- go for the slate roofing tile! Iâve heard this place sends you whole roofing tiles, which make GREAT basking spots for geckos and smaller snakes.
If you know any other tile sample places that send things out for free, please add on to this list- especially if they donât require credit card info, as a lot of people who need this list might not have that on hand.Â

Notes: a âsuperâ morph refers to two snakes of the same morph being bred together. For example, a pastel bred to a pastel would form a super pastel. This must be two snakes with visual (homozygous) traits. Super morphs can often look vastly different to the base morph, i.e. a mojave vs. a super mojave.Â
Morphs often contain genes masked by their names. If you would like to find out what genes are in a particular morph, search for them on The Big Morph List.

good post. its worth noting that the Jaguar (jag)* gene in carpet pythons is comparable to the spider gene in ball pythons as it has identical issues. the Zebra gene also has issues with the super form exhibiting varying degrees of âpiggy tailâ  ( spinal kinking that  only affects the tail of the animal)
