Boundaries between the virtual and the real have outlived their utility. Humans are not the only ones to whom the familiar formula of «Cogito ergo sum» can now be applied.Â
In the time of virtual influencers, chatbots and neural networks the features of reality of others (and of self) are being questioned.Â
The series of works “Presence” studies the nonexistent instruction to recognition of oneself as an existent personality in a new world.Â
Explications under cut
“Are you nice to chatbots?”
During neural networks and AI that are targeted at user interaction learning, a certain moral compass is set for the machine: the controversial topics are taboo, and the machines awkwardly switch the conversation to a more acceptable topic. But how acceptable and appropriate is it to impose human concepts of morals and ethics onto an entity that is anything but human?Â

“Real//Virtual”
Full of sings and symbols, the virtual space gives the user great room for self-representation. These possibilities allows to “edit” one’s identity in real time, shaping it anew; but at the same time they limit this new social entity. Incapable of the non-verbal, it is only alive in the cold light of the silver screen. However, the real and the virtual are no longer in the juxtaposition.Â

“Extension”
The ambiguity of the word “LIVE”, repeatedly written on the canvas, presents at the same time a call for existence and a notification: online right here and right now.Â

“I UPLOAD”
This piece is a reference to a poem by Charles Bernstein “My/My/My”. The outdated medium - failed polaroid photographs and corrupted film from personal archives are transported onto the canvas. The text placed on top of them is a metaphor for the indelible electronic trace of our virtual vital activity.Â

“To McLuhan”Â
The traditional artistic medium that was chosen for the whole series of works undergoes change for the first time: in reality, an alternative to it was found. The text, placed on the canvas in its digital, virtual equivalent - a scanned image of the blank canvas - later on “backed up” by the traditional acrylic pain, is a quote to the statement by Marshall McLuhan “The medium is the message”. 18x24 cm

“iAmPresent”
The exposition gifts the viewer with a unique possibility of existence - or dooms it to be present, using the never-ending online broadcast by the phone placed on the other side of the canvas to an Instagram account @presenceiampresent, which itself is a part of the art piece.Â
