I wish there was more room in media for admitting that one's romantic partner is not always the most important person in one's life. And not that shitty copout approach where a person gets super irrationally jealous and then is validated when their partner is like "oh, babe, that's just my best friend! they mean nothing to me! you, my romantic partner of two months who somehow never met any of my friends or family before today? you are my most important person."

Like I want more "you light up when this other person walks into the room... and I have no right to be upset because that's your ten-year-old sister". But no, it's always instead written like "no worries, babe! you are more important than even my own darling family I'm just supporting my little sister until she gets her own romantic partner to fill in for me!" and that's just super fucking weird. There's this prevailing belief that if a relationship is more intense, then there is some inherent sexual nature to it. Once you're pursuing or in an active romantic relationship, you're not permitted to find joy with other people anymore. Your happiness belongs to someone else, now. You must purge yourself of all earthly attachments... except for your boyfriend, Steve.

It really frustrates me that people get into a ship, and that's just it for those two characters. They have zero lives outside of each other now. Every problem is caused and solved by the ship. Ambitions? Dreams? Kaput. There is nothing in life worth living if not for their romantic partner. Friends? Family? Acquaintances? Nah. They don't exist anymore. The only threat that either character faces anymore is the threat of being separated. A fate worse than death!

There are indeed relationships in media where that codependency is inherent, where that is the entire appeal, where, if you were to separate the two for enough time or across a long enough distance, they would wither away and die. There are pairings in which I concede that if you stabbed one of them through the heart, the other's heart would explode. BUT NOT ALL ROMANCES ARE THAT WAY! And it dampens the impact when every single ship has to be between "soulmates". Not to mention the relationships that have that level of enmeshment that aren't romantic at all.

something I’ve noticed in fandoms lately is a lack of… object permanence? perspective? Just reacting to each episode/chapter of something as if it’s final & whatever plot line they dislike is the status quo forever? like…… have a tiny bit of patience

I kinda understand because a lot of franchises lately have ended in shoddy and poorly thought out ways, but tbh either have some faith in your fav show or just write fanfic

this combined with people reading a boatload of fanfic between seasons then coming back to the show & getting upset that their headcanons aren’t canon… disappointment is a normal feeling but I also feel like people put themselves through unnecessary stress watching shows they clearly do not like
