Expressionist Portraits

When painting portraits, Expressionist artists tried to express meaning or an emotional experience rather the physical reality of the moment or their subject. The artists often manipulated their subject’s appearance to express what could not be seen. This could be to express their mood, feelings, personality, or their opinion. Expressionist were not interested in just copying the subjects appearance, but used distortion, colour and different brushstrokes to form a representation the subjects physiological being instead of their physical being.

Sophie Calle - Detective (1980)

Calle had a private detective to follow her for one day. The detective followed her around and recorded his findings throughout her day. She included the detective notes in her final piece. As well as having a delective follow her, she also asked a friend to follow her at the same time. Her friends job was to take photos of anyone else who looked as if they were following her, so her essay also includes photos taken surreptitiously of the detective himself.
