Oh come on, the joke was all set up and everything I had to. I’m not gonna pretend to like him but as long as we don’t talk about it you’re fine. Seriously? I was joking but lets get you wasted. I’ll make sure you don’t remember a damn thing. Want to grab a few people and make it a party?

I’m not saying it didn’t, but you totally didn’t have to take it. I told you, you don’t have to like him, just pretend you don’t hate him for just a little while. You’re the one who brought him up, you jerk. Yeah, seriously. I don’t know who else to grab? I don’t know a lot of people over 21.

Yunn started to giggle excessively as Coen laughed along with her and nodded her head. “Of course I did. You know, I think I might have a career set for me in politics if I can keep them up.” She flipped her hair back behind her shoulder and shot him the puppy dog eyes for a moment. “Maybe I can start crying on demand and get us strawberries to go on top of them.” She laughed and picked up a fork to cut off a piece of his pancakes and steal a bite.

“I don’t know about politics,” Coen laughed. “Maybe theatrics. Or hustling. You know, we could clean house in a game of high stakes Exploding Snap.” He laughed again, a full bellied sound that was cut off by the remnants of sickness, making him lose his breath sooner than he’d have liked. “I do love strawberries. They’re kind of the best.”

“I’m just saying, we have the same face - it doesn’t make sense, especially when I’m clearly the more handsome one.” he joked. “Oh please do, I’d love to see her try. I think we both know Yun might be the more talkative one in our relationship.” he said with a laugh.

Coen laughed, a derisive sound, almost mocking. “You cannot possibly think that your faces are the thing that makes me want to kiss him. Don’t be stupid, Tommy. And no, you’re not the handsome one, but nice try.” He snorted again, this time a little more fondly. “Yun is the more talkative one in every relationship.”

Vanessa covered her face with her hands in embarrassment, shaking her head even though she was smiling. Finally she looked at him and mouthed ‘thank you’, before pointing at him and holding up two fingers and then one, asking if he was 21 now too.

Coen laugh and nodded, lifting his glass to her. “I mean, a while back, but yeah, I did just turn. Good thing I found you, I’m told you’re not supposed to drink alone.”

“Who said I didn’t? It’s kind of hard to come wish Happy Birthday when your mother has you on lock down.” Aidan grinned, his eyebrow lifting up. “That’s the problem, everyone was all worried about death and about losing this battle to the Brotherhood that no one celebrated the beginning of life.”

“What, no owl? Lame. It wasn’t transmitted through letter, you know?” He huffed a laugh, rolling his eyes. “The anniversary of life, thanks. Unless you’re like Roman and don’t believe people are people until they can drink. Trust me, though, I was definitely one of those people. The hallucinations were plenty distracting.”

Vanessa’s face burned red as the bartender belted out a loud rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ in front of everyone after checking her ID. She mouthed ‘thank you’ and took it back, taking a drink of the cocktail she’d ordered and hoping he was done drawing attention to it.

As he heard the man singing, along with half the laughing bar, Coen made his way over and dropped into the seat beside her with a wide grin. “Happy birthday, Nessa. Didn’t know you were aging up too.”

No, it’s because you’re dating a dick, not because he has one. Has anyone taken you out to properly drink?Do you have real friends?

Ha. Shut up, Roman. I know you hate him, but can you pretend you don’t for me for just a while? You don’t have to like him, just feign a little bit of indifference? Yes, I have real friends. Uh... Yun went with me and I drank, but she didn’t. I... I drank by myself and ran into Whiteridge? Professor Quinn was gonna go with me, and Hunter too, the auror. But nobody I’ve gone with yet.

Yun jumped up from her seat in a quick moment, running up to the waitress with excited hand motions as she talked to her. She used everything she could: the pouty eyes, her sweet little voice and the birthday card. She looked absolutely pathetic and it played directly into her hands as she came bouncing back to Coen with happy news. “Pancakes for Coen~!” She sang sweetly and struck a proud pose with her hands framing her face. She had also requested a little song from the staff, but she didn’t know if that was going to play out as well.

As Yun conned the woman into giving him pancakes in the middle of the day, Coen tried hard not to laugh, snorting unceremoniously and as quietly as possible. “Excellent!” he laughed, patting her arm. “Such a diplomat, you are. You use the big puppy eyes on her?” As far as he was concerned, a massive pile of pancakes was just as good as a real cake - maybe even better.

“Okay.” she said quietly with a quick nod. Maybe it’d be better if she tried smoothing things over with him instead of going through life being angry with and nervous around him. “Maybe I will then.”  Faye glanced up and saw he’d looked down, feeling bad she’d brought up the painful topic. Everyone was thinking about it anyway, though. “I wish we could have won it with her. She would’ve cheered so loud, probably helped me fly circles around Blackwell just for fun.” she said, a faint smile gracing her lips. “I bet she cheered from wherever she is now though.”

Offering a small nod, Coen gave the girl a small pat on the arm. “Let me know how it turns out?” He didn’t think she would, but it seemed like the supportive thing he could think of to say. She was right about the painful topic, though. It was all they could think of. It always seemed to be on his mind. “Me too. She would’ve been amazing.” His lips twitched and he nodded slightly. “Yeah, I’m sure she did. She and Lucy both.”

“Dude, you realize we have the exact same face?” he asked with a laugh. “Maybe that’s good, he could stand to shut up a little more.”

“Yeah, I realize you look the same, but can you honestly tell me that it’d be cool with you if Yun and I thought you guys were interchangeable?” Coen narrowed his eyes again and pulled a face at him. “So could you. I’ll have to show Yun how to get you to properly shut up.”

Faye saw his face and looking down, clenching her jaw a little. He was probably curious what had happened but what was she going to tell him, that Hunter had made her relive everything Vic did when he processed her case? No thanks. She shrugged a little, “If he wanted to come it wouldn’t be the end of the world.” she said quietly. She smiled a little, “Thanks, I couldn’t stop thinking about Danica, I think that helped.” she admitted. “We had a couple others sick so we were on our backup players, good thing we’ve been including everyone in practices lately.”

“Hey,” Coen said, stepping forward at the look on her face. “M’not gonna ask, okay? Don’t worry about it.” He offered her a small smile, hoping it would help at all if she knew that whatever she didn’t want to talk about didn’t have to be said. “I think he’d leave whatever bad blood there is behind if you asked. It’d be okay.” His small smile faltered and he looked down at his hands, fidgeting. “Yeah, I can’t stop thinking about her. Not for the game, just in a general defense. She would be so proud of you guys. Also a little pissed that she didn’t get to be there to kick our asses, but mostly proud.”

“I think we could get them to change their minds if we tell them it’s your birthday, like really happy too.” She said, thinking that if they went up and asked the servers or the chef with enthusiasm they could possibly get what they wanted. It would probably help that they intended on getting a lot of stuff including his birthday drinks.

Coen grinned, laughing softly. “Sweet. Well then, let’s get ‘em to make some pancakes for me then.” He sat back, watching her with amusement in his eyes as she tried to accommodate his birthday wishes with the waitress. As she came back, he reached out to give her a friendly pat. “She agree to do it? Did you make all my birthday wishes come true?”

Duh, I  heard about your new boyfriend, only seems fitting. Good thing she’s not around then cause that sounds fucking boring. I’m sure you’re gonna get a party I’m just not gonna get in the way of the tiny one to throw one for you. Great, we’ll see how she handles it. I’ll do it outside so she explodes on the lawn.

Did you really? Huh. Word travels fast. Does that mean if I’d gotten a girlfriend, you’d get me one shaped like a vagina? Because that seems weird. Ah, well, she was a workaholic, but she was pretty cool. Well, be there at least. The tiny one is, in fact, pretty adamant that there’s gonna be a party. Shit, yeah, less clean up if it’s outside.
