Chromium, the Mutable MTG Core 2019 Art director: Cynthia Sheppard and Mark Winters This was an exciting commission as I’d had this idea for a six-limbed dragon’s anatomy/posture for a while, and getting to design and illustrate Chromium gave me the chance to explore it. I was fortunate enough to get to illustrate (and concept) all five of these guys for the latest set of Magic, Amonkhet.  It was a really gratifying experience being able to work on these from conceptualization to finished product.

Odric, Lunarch Marshal

Here we see Odric experiencing some cognitive dissonance as the current state of his church conflicts with his core beliefs and values.  This type of emotion is kind of rare in fantasy so was happy to have the opportunity to depict it here.

Essence Depleter

Again trying to keep the focal length and perspective believable to get that candid feeling.  Wanted it to feel like we could be seeing this through the eyes of a survivor whose remained still long enough to catch a glimpse of this eldrazi passing through.

The various effects Kozilek’s brood have on the environment were a lot of fun to illustrate, this guy in particular.

Gravity Negator

This might be my favorite of all the Eldrazi I did for Oath of the Gatewatch and Battle for Zendikar.  I tried to make nearly all of these illustrations feel sort of candid, like the viewer just stumbled upon this dangerous thing in the wild, minding its own business.  I think this one was the most successful at getting that idea across.
