Pactbinder - Chapter 4 Release

Hi guys.

Chapter 4 of Pactbinder is now live.

Overall, the content added with this update is again pretty chunky: ~117k words added in total.

Total word count is at around 409k words (excluding menus and startup); the average playthrough is probably around 120k words, just under ~30% of total word count.

I do think this chapter will feel faster than the last couple - at least it did for me, when playtesting - I think that's due to a mix of action and branching.

Outside of the content outlined below, I’ve made some substantial reworks again to the menu system, including written flavourtext for the MC's relationship bars with certain important characters. There's also some fun stuff with the Mastery bars which you'll see once you get there.

Some things to look out for in Chapter 4:

Conclude the Pactbinder's first term at Hightower at last.

Take your end-term exams.

Grow closer to a collegemate - potentially romantically. Or spend time with the whole crew!

Delve into Old Hightower.

A reunion.

I hope that you enjoy the release, and please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any feedback or commentary. As always, views on the game so far and comments are truly gratefully received.

I’m especially interested to hear if the cast is still working for you and how you found the romance scenes. W4 First Interactive Epilogue Completed

The following is a copy of my announcement on Patreon:

Hello everyone! I have completed the grunt writing of the first Whiskey-Four extended epilogue! It is a continuation of epilogue four. It is mostly linear, though I've tried to pay particular attention to variations within the relationship dynamic between Whiskey and Ulysses/Ulyssa. It is short, snappy, and hopefully a fun return to a world I honestly wish I could spend more time writing in.

There's three endings, each fairly obvious in how you achieve them. They aren't earth-shatteringly different from one another, but they provide different tones to leave the reader with.

Unfortunately, Twine has no spell-check. I also find it particularly clunky and hard to use, so I'm going to do a thorough hazmat-level scrubbing of the prose and code to make sure everything is good to go before I publish it. It'll hopefully be ready by next Sunday.

It will be available to Supporters+ only. On the same day I publish it, I will release a poll for the readers to decide which next epilogue is covered. My current running ideas:

Continuation of Epilogue "Orphans from Sahara" focusing specifically on the formal marriage ceremony

Continuation of Epilogue "Outlaw Sheriff" focused on preventing a frontier mag-train heist

Continuation of Epilogue "The Director" focused on combatting a new cosmic horror (possibly "The Pax" from the short story written before)

Call for Beta Readers

As I’m writing Chapter 7 of Cantata, the branching is starting to get wild. 😵‍💫 The variations are already extensive due to attunement, RO, good/bad Eva, etc. Now I’m introducing even more variables: high/low cordis, merciful vs vengeful, whether you’ll use your attunement in fight scenes, etc. It’s a lot! And it’s too much for my current number of beta readers.

Steam finally decided to behave, so I can post my emotional rambling, and you’ll just have to endure it. 😄

Is it crazy to say that I’m more proud of The Wedding than When Life Gives You Lemons? Don’t get me wrong, I love both, and Lemons is probably the game that got me where I am since so many people resonated with it.

But as far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to make a Visual Novel, and now, four years later, with so much support from this community and a crash course in learning how to code in Ren’Py, it’s finally done. I finally published my first VN.

The graphics, the story, the characters... I love them all.

Micah holds a special place in my heart because I never thought I could create a character that sassy and still have readers fall in love with them. Cassidy was a last-minute addition and somehow became one of my favorite romances (sorry, I’m biased). Tara/Tariq is incredibly sweet, and their artwork with the bonnet is still one of my favorites.

And then there’s Danny and Taylor. All of them are so different, yet somehow they all came alive as I write every little scene and every little dialogue.

Yes, the launch was delayed on Steam because Steam needed to approve the page, and yes, I was kind of bummed out and was waiting before I made an official announcement.

But, Hey! It's finally available on Steam. 💕

This was a passion project; the game is nowhere near perfect, but I love it, flaws and all, and I’m incredibly proud of it.

Chapters 1-2 Rewrites Releasing Tomorrow

Hi everyone, I've completed the rewrites of Chapters One and Two, and they'll be releasing to both tiers of Patrons tomorrow. They'll be Patreon exclusive until the release of the final bits of Chapter Three.

A lot of oft-requested features have been implemented, including the ability to put Elya in house arrest rather than prison, avoid the Chapter Two ambush, and about 10k words worth of new scenes in Chapter One and 5k worth in Chapter Two. Additionally, I did prose touch-ups of almost every single line of Chapter One 😵‍💫😵‍💫

I think the work as a whole is much better now, and I'll turn my focus back to finishing Chapter Three :)

How would ROs react if they had a nightmare of MC dying and she wasn't there when they woke up (cause she woke up earlier and was in another room)?

I really like this ask! I actually was inspired to write full snippets for it, but then I got called away, and never found time to finish, so I've only got four. Maybe when I get some free time, I'll add Gat and Albien.

Luk:

He jerks awake sweat covering his face, and breath rapid. When he finally registers that it was just a nightmare, he rolls over seeking his wife. But she's not there.

He sits up and throws the blanket off. Why would she not be there? He reaches for his sword while he calls her name, only belatedly realizing he doesn't sleep with it any more. He moves across the room to grab it, while his eyes continue to search for his missing wife. The pommel of the sword feels cold in his hand, both serving to waken his senses and bring him comfort. He doesn't know why he needs it, but he clutches it tightly like it can banish the lingering weight of the nightmare.

It was just a dream wasn't it? He's disoriented, but not that much. He pushes open the door to the adjoining room, and the faint light of a single candle illuminates the figure he's been desperately searching for. He drops his sword, still not entirely sure what he intended to do with it.

The noise makes his wife jump out of the chair she's sitting it, and she mumbles something under her breath when she knocks over the ink vial.

"Luk?" she asks, but he doesn't give her any time to process before he moves forward, wrapping her in his arms, and burying his face in her neck.

"I thought you were gone."

"What? I wouldn't leave you. You know that," she sounds confused, but her arms tighten around him.

"Not gone as in leaving, gone as in dead." I swallows, trying to push away the tears threatening to fall. "I had a dream. And you died in my arms. It was so real then you weren't there…"

"Hey, shh," she soothes, while he loses the battle with his tears. "I'm right here."

"Come back to bed with me? I need to hold you."

Tzesar:

He wakes up with a gasp, and scrambles out of bed, his legs getting caught in the blanket during his frantic escape. He can't see anything. It's so dark, and he's never awake at this hour.

He shakes his head to try and regain his awareness and he pushes himself back to his feet. Normally MC would be laughing about this. Why isn't she laughing?

"Mc?"

The lack of answer, brings back the panic he'd just managed to shake away. This is ridiculous, it was a dream. MC isn't dead. She's here somewhere. Just not in bed.

Then the door pushes open, and Tzesar jumps with a surprised yelp. His cry is matched by the person walking in.

"MC?"

"Tzesar? You scared me, I thought you were still asleep."

"Bad dream," he answers, starting to calm down again now that she's back. "Where were you?"

"Bad vision," she responds with a shrug, making Tzesar feel guilty. She dealt with this kind of thing all the time, and somehow there were nights he still managed to sleep through it. "I went to get a snack since I didn't want to sleep again. I ran into Emperor Konstantin, and he gave me a bottle wine, said I earned it for enduring so many sleepless nights. Want some?"

"Absolutely," Tzesar agrees. He doesn't really want to go back to sleep either, and just listening to her voice is helping him calm down. "Want to tell me about your vision?"

Sentinel:

His body lays perfectly still as his eyes shoot open from the nightmare. He's no stranger to his own mind tormenting him at night, but this one had been especially bad. He throws an arm over his forehead and sighs. Yet another night where he won't get more than an hour or two of sleep.

He looks over to check on his wife as he flips the blanket off himself. But she's not in bed. His brows furrow as he tries to deduce where she might have gone. Despite the torments of his subconscious mind, he knows she's alive, and is confident he'd feel it in his very soul if she wasn't.

A faint light under the door to the washroom captures his attention. That must be where she's gone. Maybe he'll just wait for her then. Normally he goes outside when he can't sleep or wakes up in the middle of the night, but he doesn't want to just disappear if she isn't sleeping.

A moment later the door opens and the light casts her shadow into the room. A couple of footsteps follow then her soft voice filled with regret. "Did I wake you? I was trying to be quiet and conceal the candle light…"

"You're fine. It was a dream not you."

She walks forward and wraps her arms around him. "Then I'll stay up with you."

"I am not a child," he protests, as guilt fills his chest. "I can deal with a bad dream."

"Yes, but you always stay up with me after my visions."

"I have insomnia, so I'd be up anyway, besides you don't deserve the dreams that burden you."

"Neither do you," she answer, pressing a kiss to his forehead.

"Inviaynaile vayn uela lishallitharay quitha gisaivarusaid," he mumbles, not registering the words until he says them. He hadn't meant to revert to Elven. Maybe he was more affected by the dream than he thought.

Gentle hands cup his cheeks, and a small kiss to pressed against the tip of his nose. "No. And I'm staying up with you anyway.

Nax:

The room is so quite when he jerks awake that all he can hear is his heart pounding in his ears. He frantically looks around, searching for MC. He knows it was just a dream, but he has to be certain. When she's not in bed he jumps up, and throws a shirt on.

Before he can think better of it, he's marching out the door. She has to be around her somewhere; he refuses to believe she's dead. That was just the product of his stressed mind playing tricks on him. Not real. But the remnants of the dreams linger in his mind like breaking free of a siren song. Even when you can see the creature for what it is, and part of you mind still clings to the illusion it offered.

He tries the kitchen first, thinking maybe she went to get a snack or some water. Empty. Then he goes through each of her favorite places, before something in the window catches his gaze. A familiar silhouette. He marches outside and finds her sitting near the window watching the stars.

He sighs and drops down next to her. Then he scoops her up and places her in his lap, wrapping his arms around her. She sighs in contentment, but doesn't say anything else. He keeps silent too, directing his gaze to the stars that have captivated her so. Already, the warmth of her body is pushing away any lingering traces of his nightmare.

He presses a kiss to her forehead. "So what has you awake so late?"

She sighs. "I woke up because I was too hot, so I came outside to get some air, then I saw that the sky is especially clear tonight and got distracted."

Nax hums in agreement, knowing he would easily do the same. "Why don't we watch them together for a bit?"

Instead of agreeing, she pulls away enough to look at his face. "Why are you awake?"

"I-" the urge to defelct is on the tip of his tongue, but he pushes it down. "I had a bad dream."

"Do you want to tell me about it?"

"No," he answers honestly. "This is enough. Just watch the stars with me for a while."

CHAPTER FIVE IS NOW OUT FOR THE PUBLIC!

The cast of BotB season four has touched down in a new state: Ohio! That's right—they're infiltrated G's backyard (and maybe someone else's?) Unfortunately, the rockstar isn't happy about this development considering the people who have decided to show their faces here. Meanwhile certain rumors are tainting the BOTB brand while the home lives of the ROs are starting to creep up on them. Will there even be a tour? Who knows?

As usual, MC remains in the center of it all. Their plans for their future comes into question when they're forced with new faces and possibilities. That is…if they even have a career by the end of this. For some MCs they should probably keep in mind to think with their head and not their…you know!

I'm calling it an alpha demo because, and not to get all sad and lame, after the death of my family member I did not feel like adding more to my plate (aka beta testers). Writing took up much of my time already and it just hasn't been the right time to include other people into the process. Of course, that must change, and I will be getting beta testers soon now that the alpha is out. As always, the chapters are subject to change and improve as time goes on.

So with that said if there are errors im all ears! I will try to be as timely as possible.
