My First Charted Record On Top 200!!!
I woke up yesterday to see that this record I produced charted at #127 on iTunes. #127!!!!! To some this may be a small accomplishment but to me this is a major one! I was given the opportunity to produce this record “God Is Doing Something Big” for Bettina "B’Tina" Pennon!!! B’Tina has been one of the most sought out vocalists on the east coast for years. She’s performed at the Grammy Awards and performed across this country (USA) and abroad with the likes of the FAW Celebration Choir, The Jurisdictional “Shekinah” Choir, Prof. James Hall and Worship & Praise, The New York Fellowship Choir, Minister Terrance Day, the Rev. Timothy Wright Concert Choir, Elder Damien Sneed and Derrick Wright & DRIVEN.
What does this all mean? This means out of all christian/gospel songs in the entire world, we made the top 200. I didn’t create this blog to gloat, but to share this accomplishment of mine with the upcoming producers and even for the producers who have been producing for years. Success does NOT happen overnight. Don’t believe the hype. Often times you’ll find artists going viral that you NEVER heard of before and state “Wow! I never heard of this artist before, OMG they went viral overnight!” NOOO. That is incorrect. Because YOU haven’t heard of them, it “appears” that they made it overnight. The truth is, every artist/producer has a past and a grind that led up to their successful accomplishment.
Why am I saying all of this? What does this have to do with my currently charting record? Let’s do some math of my own past and grind. My first song I ever produced was released in 2012. Since then I’ve probably produced at least 300 to 400 records since then. Out of those 400 records, only 80 of them were songs that were actually released by various artists. Maybe more, but the remaining songs were songs that never came out by the artist or beats and jingles that were never ever placed. Also, to be even more transparent I only received ONE royalty statement for 1 out of those 80 records released. I’ve been producing music for a decade or so and am just starting to break into where I would like to be in my music career.
To further encourage the reader, whether you are an artist or a producer. BUILD CATALOGS OF MUSIC! Don’t just focus on ONE record for 5 months. Create many songs, and many different styles if you are a music producer. Perfect your craft. Doing so is what will make you a WELL-ROUNDED producer. If you want to be known for producing trap music or known for producing gospel music, then market and brand yourself in those arenas...but still produce in various genres. I’ve produced more secular music than gospel, but it was this christian/gospel record that was charted. I’ve read and studied other producers who have the same stories similar to mine, that it took them years of grinding before any of their records were placed. It also is important to network and get connected to the right people, even that takes time. You want the president of Sony Music Entertainment to place all of your music and “put you on”, but you won’t even take time out of your months to have constant conversations with him/her and be on top of following up. I’ll write a blog about networking tactics another day, but back to charting.
Sure I’ve been producing records for a decade, but I truly feel I am just getting started. This first record that charted is only the beginning for me, I still have a long road ahead. If you’ve left with any insight be sure to ask and answer these 3 questions for yourself before you go:
1. Are you registered with a P.R.O.? If so, have you further invested into own your own publishing company?
2. For upcoming artists, do you have 20 to 30 songs fully recorded mixed and mastered ready to go?
3. For upcoming producers, do you have 100 to 200 songs fully produced? (NOT IDEAS) Fully produced! Out of those 100-200 do you at least have 5 records in every genre/style of music produced?
Some of you may have a lot of work to do, so get to it! For those artist/producers who have been creating music for a decade and even longer than myself, KEEP GOING! Just because you’re not receiving the views and relationships you want does not mean it must end there. Sometimes it takes making a few adjustments in your branding, creating, and quality to get the results you want. I too had to do this, and began seeing incredible results because of these changes.
