He moved to Berlin after highschool for college —he felt remorse doing so, leaving behind his younger sister and father, but he had to escape Winden— and to stop running into her daily, the stunning (and unattainable) Miss Doppler.
Berlin is agreeable. Noah studies, makes good grades and acquaintances yet no real friends, keeps a low profile and doesn’t meddle in other people’s personal affairs. He even gets a girlfriend after one semester… everything is perfectly fine.
Still, from time to time, he thinks of her ; of the 8-years-older-than-him librarian of his previous highschool ; of Elisabeth Doppler and her vivid eyes and gentle smile and sharp mind. Once, during his weekly phonecall to his family, he randomly asked Agnes about her studies and if she spent time at the library (“Subtle Noah-” “Why do you say that?” “-she is gone. Apparently she was transfered somewhere in the west, I don’t know”), and like that, the chapter ended.
Now Noah is in his second year, twenty, alone, and the “International Fair for Books and LIterature” is in Berlin. He’s walking down the aisles of scriptural studies when he sees her. Golden hair falling beneath her shoulders, eyes as green as a spring meadow, expression thoughtful as she flips through the page of a book about the moon, smile lighting up the whole place as she writes something into her notepad.
He notices a logo from an idependant library in Berlin East on her bag, and the absence of a band around her ring finger.
So she didn’t marry, the thought crosses his mind and he feels seventeen again. Except, this time, no one knows them, this time no one is here to judge them, and this time no one will stop him.
Noah scrapes a hand through his hair to put it in some semblance of order and walks towards Elisabeth…
