I don't know why but I want to go on a slightly cold hike. Thick gloves, thick pullovers weighing you down. A full backpack and thick leather boots trudging through autumn mud. Taking a rest on a mossy log, grabbing a nice fiery liquor to share. Wet, fresh air around our smiles as we build a little fire for the night. Damp logs crackling and spitting sparks, a pot full of well deserved soup simmering away. A soft pelting of rain on our tents singing us to sleep.
A foggy morning awaiting us, a tiny ember reignited to make some coffee. Weary feet in worn boots, trudging to our destination. Trees creaking, leaves dropping, sticks and stones the only noise. Another rest, a thermos of tea shared between friends.
A view of changing leaves, of fog and clouds becoming one. The bite of winter nipping at your heels.
Returning to camp, logs split, fiery liquor and stew. A story, a song, an adventure shared.
Night falls and lifts again. Cold hands swiftly packing up tents. A way back and sounds of the night recreated. Tired laughter filling a car ride. Saying good bye stop by stop.
Up the stairs, back to comfort, now deserved.
Barbican at dusk. London, October 2015.
Last spring, my children and I travelled to Xeraco, Spain. We stayed in a small fisherman’s house in a neighbouring village. It didn’t have many modern comforts, but it stood right beside the beach and had a terrace overlooking the sea—and that was more than enough. This quick sketch was painted directly from life on the coast in about 30 minutes, while the children played in the sand and flew a kite nearby.Everything in front of me was constantly changing: the light shifted, the sky transformed from one minute to the next, the waves kept moving, and a ship slowly passed across the horizon. But on the canvas, all these fleeting moments remained together—still, yet somehow full of movement. That is what I love about painting from life: the world never stops, but for a moment, the painting holds it still. 🌊🎨🪁
