Orpheus and Eurydice from Hadestown! Doing some more playing around with the new True Grit Texture Supply Aqua Studio brushes for Clip Studio Paint.
A little deep-sea wonder for your Friday đâ¨ď¸
This siphonophore, Erenna richardi, can be identified by the massive clusters of tentilla (the side branches of the tentacle) at the end of the tail (siphosome). In Monterey Bay, this species has been observed at average depths of about 1,100 meters (3,600 feet). These siphonophores are armed with a battery of powerful stinging tentacles, and researchers have seen them ensnaring fish just above the seafloor.â â Historically, gelatinous animals have been challenging to study. Their delicate nature makes them difficult to collect, especially from the oceanâs depths. By using deep-diving robotsâremotely operated vehicles, or ROVsâMBARI and our collaborators are revealing the dazzling diversity of delicate drifters that lies beneath the surface.
Before I saw Hadestown, I did not realize you could play the violin menacingly, but I would've accepted it. However, I would have been pretty confident that playing the accordion menacingly was not possible.
Now that I have seen the Fates, I stand thoroughly corrected.
like the point is eurydice signs the contract so that she can survive. she's hungry and cold. and hades promises food, shelter, safety, even comfort. but she still doesn't get what she's after because it kills her. we submit to the capitalism machine because we need food, we need somewhere to lay our head in order to be people, but it strips away our personhood anyway.
also people tend to laugh at those who criticize capitalism saying âthen just donât participateâ when you literally cannot live and feed yourself without participating in capitalism in the current system established. you can empathize with eurydice so well since we are all eurydice in some capacity
no okay but persephone. when you listen to the soundtrack it's like she's a party girl she drinks and has fun but you guys dont understand because every single time she took a drink she grimaced. every single time. not once did she enjoy herself, because it wasn't her indulging in her wants it was her coping. and even!! even during livin it up on top when everyone takes a drink there's a moment of silence where they all look almost disgusted by it. none of them enjoy it it doesn't taste good to any of them yet still they drink it??
and then UGH okay because lady of the underground i was under the impression that she was interacting with the workers and whatnot like making the cracks in the wall that orpheus was about to break down but there's no one on stage. the only people on stage are the musicians, hermes, and persephone. none of the workers are there. she's singing to herself. do you understand do you get it?? especially with why do we build the wall right before that because I didn't realize persephone was in that song?? and the whole time she looks terrified. she Doesn't want to be here she Doesn't want to engage with this (my mom compared the song to being at a maga rally and she was 100% correct) but she does anyway, perhaps because she's forced to. and the look of heartbreak when eurydice appears; the way eurydice is confused and put off at first, but it doesn't take long for her to learn the words and join in????
eurydice and persephone is a whole other thing because I never realized how much of a relationship they had. like persephone is quick to be friendly with her, and eurydice is enthralled by that attention. but then during chant when persephone is singing about like the earth dying and people starving she's looking at eurydice walking by. she's looking at her and she looks heartbroken, she's reaching out to her but she can't reach her because she's not there. she watches as the fates strip eurydice of everything she has, and then that look of despair changes of one to fear as hades' eyes land on eurydice as he declares he'll find someone else who will be grateful. and I know that like flowers can be like an analogy for sa but I really felt it during that part. not so much in songbird vs rattlesnake? but definitely during the end of chant like AJHVSGDJAS.
and then like I said when eurydice enters the underworld persephone looks shaken. because she knows eurydice, and she knows orpheus, and- idk man. imagine being in hell and someone you know shows up, but you know they can't leave and you know they're soon to become a shell of who they once were. like. yeah
EDIT IF YOURE READING THIS CHECK THE REBLOGS THE ONE WITH BLUE'S TAGS IS THE BEST YOU SHOULD REBLOG THAT ONE NOT THIS ONE!!!!
the beautiful storytelling in hadestown is the way they build this world as one dictated by the gods (ie hades and persephoneâs love) and the direct impact this has on the world leading to, for example, climate change. the gods are responsible for when âthe harvest dies and people starve, oceans rise and overflowâ. BUT itâs also the direct doing of hades building his capitalist empire for persephone that causes all this, so even through it all, they tie it all back to the message that:
Climate Change is a direct result of the selfish greed of Capitalism
watched the hadestown proshot yesterday and. songbird vs. rattlesnake and flowers have always both held a shit ton of sexual abuse undertones but god you could really see it in the proshot. the fact that hades tells persephone that if she "doesn't want my love, I'll give it someone else who does" then immediately turns to Eurydice as he continues. the expression of fear on persephone's face. the fact that eurydice is so terrified yet just a bit entranced by him, but also needs what he has. orpheus jumping between eurydice and hades during way down hadestown-- which feels funny at first because it's itty bitty orpheus trying his best to protect her from Hades-- and then not being able to keep her from him, anyways. it makes me think of how people stay in abusive relationships because they can't financially support themselves or because it's all they know, because it's safer than doing what you truly love, and they can't afford to be unsafe. it's bad for her, and she hates it, but she needs to survive so bad that she can't say no.
the literal gasp I let out when hades produced a flower in epic iii
Conversation overheard in the movie theater bathroom immediately after a showing of Hadestown:
âJust goes to show that love doesnât exist. Heâs just gonna turn around. Whatâs the point?â
âSaaarah nooooooooo, an Orpheus that doesnât turn around is an Orpheus that isnât in love, thatâs the whole poooiiint!â
only ever imagining Chant, I was truly blown away at how that song is staged!! with the lighting color changes shifting from the winter up above to the orange hue of the factory walls of hadestown, the dynamic shifts all culminating in hades shifting his gaze to eurydice transitioning into Hey Little Songbird
ugh and the moment the fates were stealing eurydiceâs bag and coat in the âgive that back!â moment, my heart literally broke
the most devestating lyrical moment I realized while watching the hadestown proshot was when eurydice says âall Iâve ever known is how to hold my ownâ and her sharing that vulnerability of letting someone in to orpheus just for him to not be there for her when she needs him most
so i just watched the hadestown proshot and holy fucking shit i truly think that that is the best proshot i have ever seen so here are some specific things i really loved
amber gray's expressions just wow. she is so expressive and such a phenomenal actress
the way the fates appeared behind orpheus during wait for me
how every time during group numbers the camera focused on a certain person you could hear their vocals more clearly than everyone else
all of the fates
wait for me reprise in 4k with peak sound holy shit eva noblezada i love you so much
the cracking noises during wait for me when the walls opened up
the shots from above/below the stage
how during doubt comes in all the shots were primarily close ups of orpheus so it was hard to tell where eurydice was
one of the people in my theater shouting "NO" when orpheus turned around
literally so many more things i could talk about this proshot for ages
please i beg if you have not/are not intending on seeing it to watch it it is a masterpiece
the beauty of the hadestown proshot was truly in the artistry of the camera angles guiding the story and the eye line of the character. sometimes itâs hard to see from far in the theater either the background character or the direction a character is looking, but it was shot so well the story was given so much more depth than I had gleaned from just listening to the soundtrack. iâm excited to see hadestown live next year, but iâm so happy the proshot exists
