Lacey took a sharp breath as the man leaned down closer to her. The way he moved, his pose and even the expression on his face made her very uneasy. He didnât seem like a man, and yet he definitely looked like one. At his claim that he knew her, Lacey opened her mouth to reply, but the words got stuck in his throat. âYouâre right. Iâm not Alice,â she spoke, her voice still hushed, âIâmâŠâ and then she broke off, her eyes growing wide for a moment as she even took a small step backwards, surprised and bewildered. No, she wasnât Alice, definitely not, but she also wasnât the one she claimed to be. âIâm not Lacey,â she exclaimed, slowly, confusion settling in her face. âI was, but Iâm not really her, am I?â The question was hardly directed at him as Lacey glanced back at the house again. âItâs a curse. She must have cursed me. What if I havenât even really escaped?â Lacey could feel dread settling in, but she quickly bottled it up and refocused on the problem at hand. Panicking would do absolutely nothing good for her. âWho are you?â She asked slowly, tilting her head. âAnd whoâs Alice?â They could try to help each other out.
At the mention of the Red Queen and Wonderland, Lacey shook her head. âItâs the Evil Queen, not the Red Queen. Havenât even heard of her. How much time has passed since the Ogre wars? I keep getting the feeling that so long has passed⊠what if heâs dead?â Not knowing who she was looking for made the question was very hard to answer. âAnd this isnât Wonderland. Thatâs not how we call it. But Iâve read stories,â although Lacey never believed them to be true. Yet, if she thought about it, she couldnât say for sure that she was in the Enchanted Forest either. Something felt⊠off.
Lacey raised an eyebrow at his comment about the furniture, but that was it. Besides, the grin on his face was making her question the decision to talk with him in the first place. What if he was just stalling until the Evil Queen came back? âNo, I told you, I havenât seen anyone. For years,â the people that the man was looking for could have been back in the house - although why should they? The Queen had a castle with towers and dungeons. The house was⊠whatever it was. âI donât doubt it,â she commented dryly as she took few small steps forward. âLook, I donât know the queen youâre talking about, but the Evil Queen is very real and sheâs here and so I have to keep moving until she finds me again. Iâd suggest you leave too, sheâs not known to be compassionate.â Lacey pulled a couple of branches out of her face as she walked deeper into the forest. âIâll know who I am looking for once I find him,â she replied quietly, determination in her voice.
Chester knew exactly what his moments were doing, and he continued doing them for exactly that reason. He was the predator, the alpha in this discussion and he wanted to be sure the woman knew that. He was no king, but he ruled his forest all the same. He blinked slowly as the woman stumbled over her own name. It would have cause him to chuckle, if not for the fact that he couldnât remember his own name either... My my, there was definitely a spell going on here. Luckily he hadnât reached the point where his own body seemed foreign to him. He titled his head slowly, looking down at her, âNot Lacey it is then. Who you were or who you are can pale in comparison to how you feel. Identify is built from feelings. You might want to try feeling a tree.â he suggested lazily, a hint of a chuckle in his words. âCurrrrrrrse?â he said the word slowly, it almost came out like a purr in his deep voice. âThe mind is itâs own landscape and a curse to the mind is far more vicious. I suspect weâre both slipping into madness.â Not that he minded, madness was an old friend to him. âAlice is not you.â he responded vaguely, his grin not faltering all the while.
âEvil and Red are colours and feelings, one can be evil and red or while and good. But you canât be white and red, nor evil and good.â He tongue flicked out to wet his lips slightly, âOgreâs? They never came to Wonderland, the portal was well hidden, like the passage of time in our minds. I suspect the time is more than you thought, and less than youâd think.â He chuckled, the deep noise seeming to vibrate through the tree to the ground, âIâve often found death to be more a matter of perspective, try looking a different way and the dead will come to you.â
âNot Wonderland?â he questioned slowly, âExplainâs the abysmal game. Not a Bandersnatch in sight nor mind.â And he felt rather annoyed about it, it had been so long since heâd got to bite though the creatures throat, this girl was the largest prey heâd seen in his time, but she was providing good conversation thus far, so he held back. âThatâs a pity. Iâd wager a great many people have seen you.â The talking botany for one, if not the animals as well. He rubbed his cheek against the tree he was lounging on, scratching at the side of his face, no reaction coming when the move caused him to scratch his cheek. A small amount of blood dripped down, and his tongue snaked out to catch it. âAll this talk of Queenâs, I never get involved in politics.â he said shortly. then, in an almost inhumanly elegant move lent back to fall off the branch, a hand shooting out to grab the branch and swing him forward so he landed crouched beside Lacey. He rose slightly, âIn that case youâd better start looking.â he replied lazily.
