“You didn’t wake me. I haven’t been able to sleep in weeks anyway.” Ruby sighed as she sat next to Jeanne. “I’ve been thinking about the same stuff too…..Everything that happened.” Ruby sighed, looking away for a moment. “I know I said this before but……I’m still sorry about what happened to Pyrrha.”

     “Ruby, it’s not your fault.  What happened  to Pyrrha...she made her choice when she  went after Cinder alone.”  The taste of that  final kiss still burned against Jeanne’s lips, a  flavor that would linger for the rest of her  life just to torment her with the knowledge she’d  never taste it again.  “Pyrrha died a hero.  She  bought just enough time.  She knew she’d  die and she didn’t care.”

Ruby, who once competed for heaviest sleeper on team RWBY, had become a VERY light sleeper after what happened at Beacon, and was easily the lightest sleeper on this makeshift team. She heard Jeanne speak allowed. With worry for her friend, Ruby slowly got up and let out a slight yawn as she walked over, and sat next to Jeanne. “Is there something on your mind?”

     Jeanne removed her gaze from the campfire  to see Ruby approaching, that familiar red cape  being a comfort to her in this unfamiliar forest.   She scooted over to allow Ruby more room to  sit and turned her attention back to the orange  flames licking the air.  

     “Oh, just the same old stuff...did I wake you?   Sorry if I did...”

     Jeanne’s shift to keep watch while  Ruby, Nora, and Ren slept seemed to  drag for longer tonight than most of  the previous nights since their journey  began.  The blonde was left to her  thoughts, memories of happier times  when life wasn’t so complicated and  her entire world hadn’t been turned  on its head.  She poked their fire with  a small stick while the embers rose into  the air.  

     “Fuck my life...”

Yin smiled as he pat her shoulder and chuckle. "Whats up killer? How have you been?"

     The sudden presence of another jolted Jeanne out of her daydreaming, the blonde taking in a sharp breath as her head whipped around to face Yin.  

     “Yin!  Hey, oh uh you know.  Not a lot, just...ummm...studying yeah!”  Jeanne’s hands moved to the pile of open textbooks on the table in front of her to act like she was actually reading them.  “Mind not telling Pyrrha I dozed off?  I’ll never hear the end of it if she finds out.”

Ruby looked at Jeanne, silver eyes filled with concern. If she was anything like the young Rose, the blonde knight loved her family dearly and leaving them was hard, but living and going on this journey was important.

They did not know if they will find answers, but at the same time, they needed to press forward on this journey. There was only so much time they could spend doing nothing.

Moving closer, Ruby lifted her red cape and draped it over Jeanne as she pulled her into a hug with her left. She laid her head against the other’s shoulder, sterling eyes burned with passion like the fire before them.

“We’re doing this for them. We’re doing this for everyone, Jeanne. That’s all we need to do… That’s all we need to remember.”

     A deep sigh escaped her lips.  She molded into the embrace, cheek leaned against the top of Ruby’s head.  She was used to all of her friends being shorter than she was, so this position was nearly second nature to the blonde girl. 

     “Yeah, we’re doing it for them...for everyone on Remnant.  For Penny and Pyrrha.”
